Derry Halloween runs October 28-November 1, 2026, with three trail evenings followed by the October 31 parade and fireworks. Most city events need no ticket. The reserved Walls section is fully booked, with limited extra tickets due at noon on each trail day. On Halloween night, plan around the Peace Bridge closure before choosing your return train.

The 40th-anniversary celebrations draw on Samhain stories, local performers and the city's historic Walls. The practical choice is whether you want a trail evening, the Halloween-night finale, or a daytime family visit. Those plans have different booking and transport requirements.

Derry's trail evenings versus Halloween night

The official 2026 programme separates the main events:

VisitWhat happensPlanning consequence
October 28, 29 or 30Awakening the Walled City, 18:00-21:00Choose one trail evening; reserve only if entering the designated Walls section
Saturday, October 31Carnival parade about 19:00; fireworks about 20:15Plan a viewing area and return route before the bridge closes
Through Sunday, November 1Selected daytime events, including Little Horrors at Waterloo PlaceCheck each listing; Sunday is not another parade or trail night

Do not book a Sunday visit expecting Saturday's fireworks. Equally, a Wednesday or Thursday evening can suit someone interested in street performances rather than the finale. The trail includes aerial work at The Diamond, circus on the Grand Parade and performances around the centre; the programme map helps you choose a manageable area.

Can you go without an Awakening the Walled City ticket?

Yes. The organizer's ticket guidance reserves only a designated Walls section; the wider city trail is free without booking.

On October 28, reservations were fully booked. Limited extras are scheduled for 12:00 noon on October 28, 29 and 30. Use the organizer's booking links; availability is not guaranteed.

Arrive ten minutes early with your digital ticket. Entry is at Bishop Street Car Park; exit is at Lower Magazine Street. The three dates have 18:00 relaxed sessions. Confirm infant arrangements directly: the FAQ contains inconsistent child-ticket wording, including an under-two exception.

Without a reservation, choose the wider city installations and performances. There is no reason to pay an unofficial seller for a free reservation.

Where should you watch the parade and fireworks?

Choose the side of the river that works with your accommodation or onward journey. The council's October 24 travel notice schedules a Peace Bridge closure from approximately 19:00 to 21:00 on October 31. Reopening depends on conditions, so 21:00 is not a guaranteed crossing time.

That matters if you watch on the city side and need to reach a Waterside train. A map's ordinary walking estimate may send you across a closed bridge. Check the current pedestrian arrangements with stewards and allow time for the crowd to disperse.

Save the parade route map from the official programme before leaving. Keep entrances and managed routes clear rather than choosing a spot that blocks other visitors. Follow event directions if the viewing arrangements change.

Late trains to Belfast and the sold-out bus special

Translink's current event notice lists these October 31 rail arrangements:

Departure from Derry/LondonderryPublished operation
21:38All stops to Belfast Grand Central
22:38Additional service, all stops to Belfast Grand Central

Its Halloween bus special is marked sold out. That is not a statement that all regular buses or rail tickets are unavailable. Use the operator's journey planner for your actual stop and ticket, including Coleraine or another intermediate destination.

The 21:38 train needs particular care if your route depends on the Peace Bridge reopening. Do not build a plan around a 21:00 reopening followed by a normal, uncrowded walk. Check your route and platform access before the evening starts; consider whether the later listed service better fits your group. Neither listing guarantees space or a disruption-free journey.

For October 28-30, select that specific date in the planner. Saturday's additional service should not be assumed to run after every trail evening.

Driving: which car parks and roads are affected?

The council lists these car-park closures:

Car parkUnavailable dates
Foyle StreetOctober 27-November 2
Bishop StreetOctober 26-31
Queen's QuayOctober 31

It also lists Ulster University event parking on October 31. Check access instructions and signs rather than assuming every university space is available.

On October 28-30, the notice starts some street closures at 06:00, others at 14:00, and Foyle Street, New Market Street and Market Street at 16:00. On October 31, Queen's Quay closes 16:00-22:00 and Foyle Street 17:00-22:00, with further restrictions. Read the full notice for your approach; an apparently short drive through the centre may not be possible.

Save the car park location and agree a meeting point before separating. A parking place close to the fireworks is not necessarily the quickest exit afterward. Follow temporary restrictions even when a navigation app suggests the road is usable.

Families, quieter spaces and accessible viewing

The programme lists Little Horrors at Waterloo Place, 11:00-18:00, October 28-November 1, with storytelling, crafts and face painting. A daytime visit can be a more manageable starting point than committing to the full evening. Check individual indoor activities separately: some require paid tickets or have age limits.

The festival accessibility page lists:

  • A Guildhall quiet/sensory space, October 28-31, 10:00-21:00.
  • A quiet cabin at the Ebrington funfair through November 1.
  • Parade viewing at Queen's Quay opposite City Hotel and a platform at Strand Road Car Park, allocated first come, first served.
  • Accessible parking at Victoria Market, October 28-November 1, and at Strand Road and St Columb's Park on October 31. Spaces cannot be reserved in advance.
  • Changing Places facilities at named venues including the North West Transport Hub and Foyleside; check opening times and access arrangements.
  • Safety wristbands from the information point for a child's or vulnerable visitor's contact number.

An accessible facility listing does not guarantee that every route between venues suits your group. Ask the event team about the route you need, including the bridge closure, and leave room for breaks. Take warm, rain-appropriate clothing and footwear you can walk in; check same-day organizer notices before setting out.

A first visit that does not depend on getting a ticket

For a trail evening, arrive with time for a meal, pick a small part of the programme and allow space to stop for performances. Add the reserved section only if you have a confirmed slot. Leave a screenshot of the return journey with everyone in your group.

For October 31, settle the return route first, then choose your viewing side and arrival time. If you want a pub or music event afterward, check the individual venue's admission and availability before treating it as your fallback. Free outdoor events do not include entry to every indoor night.

For a family afternoon, choose one activity and a food break rather than trying to complete the entire programme. A longer holiday can use our United Kingdom with kids guide; a separate Ireland family guide covers Republic of Ireland planning, not Northern Ireland ticket or entry rules.

Apps, saved tickets and mobile data in Derry

Use the Translink journey planner or the operator's app linked from the official arrival guide. Save your festival ticket, programme PDF, accommodation address and return details offline. A battery pack is useful if the same phone holds your ticket and journey information.

Derry is in Northern Ireland, so compare the UK allowance in your home plan before buying more data. On October 28, OpenSim United Kingdom plans listed 1GB for seven days at USD1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at USD3, both with top-up available for those specific plans. A small prepaid allowance can suit checking changed routes and messaging away from Wi-Fi without buying a larger package for a short stay.

If your home plan already includes enough UK data, it may be simpler to use it. A UK-only package should not be assumed to cover Dublin or Donegal; check the actual country list for a cross-border itinerary. Mobile data cannot guarantee reception in crowds, reopen a bridge or reserve a train seat.

Use the travel data calculator, check phone compatibility and review installation timing before departure.

Sources and updates

Checked October 28, 2026 against the linked festival, council and operator sources. This guide will be reviewed after the daily ticket releases, for material transport or event changes, and after the November 1 finish. For same-day changes, use the organizer and operator notices rather than an old screenshot or previous year's itinerary.
