Visitors beneath illuminated entrance balloons on Lyon's rue de la Republique during the December 2025 light festival

Lyon's Fête des Lumières runs from Saturday, December 5, to Tuesday, December 8, 2026. The general hours are 19:00-23:00, except Sunday, December 6, when they are 18:00-22:00. The festival is free. Choose your evening and accommodation now, then use the new programme to decide which installations to visit.

The organizer's dated 2026 schedule also allows individual artworks to have different hours. A four-hour festival window does not mean every venue admits people until the final minute.

This is the December outdoor light festival, not October's Lumière film festival. A cinema accreditation or old screening timetable has no role in planning these four evenings.

Which evening should you choose?

EveningGeneral hoursA practical reason to choose it
Saturday, December 519:00-23:00Fits a weekend break, with substantial crowds to plan around
Sunday, December 618:00-22:00Earlier start and finish may suit children or an earlier bedtime
Monday, December 719:00-23:00An option if your trip can extend beyond the weekend
Tuesday, December 819:00-23:00The traditional date associated with residents' window candles

The Lyon Tourist Office's event guidance says Saturday traditionally draws the largest crowds and December 8 is also popular. It expects busy streets on all four evenings. Sunday is an earlier evening, not a guaranteed quiet one.

One night can work if you choose a compact selection. Two evenings give you more room for a slow meal, an early finish or a second attempt after poor weather. There is little benefit in adding a night if you intend to spend it rushing between every location.

Is the festival free, and when is the programme available?

The official FAQ confirms free admission and says the digital programme is due in November. Paper copies follow later in the month. You do not need to buy a general festival admission ticket. Accommodation, travel, meals and any separately sold tour are different costs.

As checked on October 27, the festival homepage advertises more than 25 works, but the complete visitor programme is still forthcoming. Its retrospective photographs are not confirmation that those installations return in 2026. Wait for the new artwork pages and map before reserving dinner around a particular show.

The event grew from Lyon's tradition of placing small candles, or lumignons, in windows on December 8. That local tradition helps explain the evening's importance; it does not turn every light you see into an official installation.

Build a short route from the new map

Once the programme appears, pick a few works that genuinely interest your group in one connected area. Check their individual opening and last-entry details. Add a meal and a toilet stop before deciding whether a second area still fits.

Save the map with its year visible. A screenshot from an earlier edition may show a different entrance, artwork or walking direction. Use the current signs and staff instructions if they differ from your phone's shortest route.

Lyon's main areas are useful orientation points: the Presqu'île lies between the rivers, while Vieux Lyon is across the Saône. These are planning areas, not a confirmed 2026 artwork itinerary. Do not add Fourvière or a distant park simply because an old article included it.

Choose your final work with the journey home in mind. A route ending near a usable return connection can be more convenient than finishing on the opposite side of the festival and trying to cross the busiest streets again.

The organizer says rehearsals are for professional work. Do not book an earlier night expecting a public preview or follow a working crew as a crowd-avoidance tactic.

Getting to Lyon: check which station you booked

For rail arrivals, read the destination on your ticket rather than treating every Lyon station as interchangeable. Lyon Part-Dieu, Lyon Perrache and Lyon Saint-Exupéry TGV are different arrival points. Put your actual station and accommodation address into the journey planner before choosing a train home.

From the airport, Rhônexpress's timetable lists about 30 minutes to Part-Dieu. That is the service's journey time, not a door-to-door estimate including passport checks, baggage, walking and your onward connection. Check the departure schedule for your arrival time.

TCL's airport guidance distinguishes routes using TCL fares from Rhônexpress fares. It warns that only some departures on the relevant bus route reach the airport terminus. Check the destination displayed on the service; a bus heading in roughly the right direction is not enough.

For a short visit with luggage, compare the complete journey and transfers rather than the cheapest single ticket alone. Leave enough margin that a delayed flight does not make you miss the only evening you booked Lyon to see.

Do not use last year's transport offer as a 2026 ticket

The festival's getting-around page describes pedestrian restrictions and warns that vehicles inside a closed perimeter may be unable to leave their car park during closure hours. Ask your accommodation or parking operator about both arrival and departure access.

That page still contains date combinations from an earlier edition, including Sunday, December 7. In 2026 Sunday is December 6. Its listed footbridge closures, late services and special fares should therefore not be treated as a complete current transport plan.

Before travelling, use TCL's current network information for the dated event notice, fare and last service. Do not budget on a free December 8 journey or a late park-and-ride return until the operator confirms the 2026 arrangement.

For each evening, save an outward route and a return route. Include the walk to the boarding point and a queue buffer. If you need a taxi, identify a permitted pickup point outside any restrictions rather than expecting collection beside an installation.

A manageable evening with children

Sunday's earlier start may help, but your child's usual bedtime, comfort in crowds and walking tolerance matter more than the number of installations. Start with an early meal, choose one short area and leave while the evening is still enjoyable.

Bring warm layers, waterproof clothing and shoes suitable for standing as well as walking. A charged phone and a small power bank help with return plans. Keep children's contact details and a meeting point available without unlocking a parent's phone.

The tourist office's family festival page remains explicitly a 2025 programme. Its named children's installation, food area and special transport prices are not a confirmed 2026 family package. Check the new programme for toilets, breaks and suitable works near your route.

A carrier may be easier than a buggy in a dense crowd if it suits your family, but it is not an access solution for everyone. With a pushchair, plan a shorter route and a way out before entering a busy area. For the rest of your holiday, use our broader France with kids guide.

Accessibility needs a route-specific check

The official accessibility page describes staffed reception points and access support. The FAQ also describes arrangements linked to France's Carte Mobilité Inclusion. Ask the organizer which assistance and evidence apply to your visit, especially if you hold a non-French disability document.

Confirm the 2026 reception locations, step-free route and usable toilets before setting out. A general statement that the event welcomes everyone does not establish that every crowded street, bridge approach or installation suits every visitor. For transport, check lift availability as well as whether the line itself is operating.

Useful phone preparation and an OpenSim France plan

Keep the official festival website and TCL journey planner bookmarked. Download the current map, accommodation address and return booking while on Wi-Fi. An offline city map helps with orientation, while live notices are useful for service changes. Messaging helps a separated group reconnect, but agree a physical meeting point too.

On October 27, OpenSim's France plans included 1 GB for 7 days at USD 1.40 and 3 GB for 15 days at USD 3.40, both with top-up available. For a short Lyon break, those country allowances can fit better than buying a broader regional plan you will not use. Check your unlocked phone's compatibility and the selected package's current terms before purchase.

If your existing mobile plan already includes enough French data without an extra charge, using it may be simpler. OpenSim does not guarantee reception in a crowd or replace downloaded tickets. Our travel data calculator, phone compatibility guide and installation timing guide cover those separate decisions.

Sources and updates

Checked October 27, 2026 against the organizer's 2026 hours, FAQ and current programme page, Lyon Tourist Office guidance, and the named transport operators. We will update this guide when the November programme and dated transport arrangements are published. After December 8, treat it as reference coverage for the 2026 edition.
