Qatar Airways-WestJet codeshare: routes and booking checks

Qatar Airways and WestJet announced a reciprocal codeshare on October 26, 2026. The first phase connects Qatar Airways' daily Doha flights at Toronto Pearson and Montréal-Trudeau with selected WestJet services in Canada.

The practical benefit is a single booking with coordinated connections and through-checked bags on eligible itineraries. It is not a merger, and it does not make every flight sold by either airline part of the agreement. Before paying, open each segment and check the marketing airline, operating airline and ticket details.

The practical answer: use a through itinerary offered by Qatar Airways or WestJet, then confirm the operating carrier and final bag destination. The airlines have announced the partnership, but not every seat, loyalty benefit or partner service is documented for every fare.

WestJet's announcement says its code will initially appear on Qatar Airways' Toronto-Doha and Montréal-Doha services. It also says Qatar Airways will place its code on selected WestJet flights beyond those Canadian gateways.

Qatar Airways says it has operated daily at both Toronto and Montréal since October 25, giving the partnership 14 Canada-Doha frequencies a week. Daily service does not mean every domestic connection is available every day or at a useful time. Search the complete journey for the actual date.

Nine Canadian destinations are named, while WestJet says 11

Qatar Airways names nine Canadian cities for its initial WestJet-operated connections:

  • Vancouver
  • Calgary
  • Edmonton
  • Halifax
  • Ottawa
  • Regina
  • Saskatoon
  • St. John's
  • Winnipeg

WestJet's release describes “11 new Canadian connections” but names only Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Ottawa and Winnipeg in its body. Neither airline release reviewed by OpenSim identifies two additional cities beyond Qatar Airways' nine-city list.

Treat the nine named destinations as the confirmed public list. A booking result may show another eligible codeshare, but do not infer the missing two cities from the headline alone. The flight details on the date of purchase control the itinerary.

One ticket can simplify the connection

The airlines describe a single booking, one check-in process, coordinated connections and through-checked baggage as launch benefits. Those protections matter most when a domestic flight feeds the Qatar Airways departure or follows an arrival from Doha.

A single itinerary still needs inspection. Confirm that every segment appears under the same ticket, not merely in the same email or travel-app screen. If an agent combines separate tickets, the Qatar Airways-WestJet partnership does not automatically turn them into a protected connection.

Keep the ticket number and both airlines' booking references. The operating carrier's reference may be needed for seats, special meals or online check-in even when the other airline sold the ticket.

Check-in and bags follow the actual itinerary

WestJet's airline-partner guide tells passengers to check in with the airline operating the first flight. That means a WestJet domestic departure normally starts with WestJet, while a Canada-Doha journey that begins on Qatar Airways starts with Qatar Airways.

WestJet says bags can be checked through on an itinerary bought from WestJet that includes an airline partner, although exclusions can apply. At the counter, read the baggage tag and confirm the final airport. A through tag does not remove customs or security steps required at an intermediate airport.

Baggage allowance and fees can depend on the marketing carrier, operating carrier, fare and ticket. Use the allowance printed on the issued itinerary. Do not assume WestJet's standalone domestic rules apply unchanged to a Qatar Airways-marketed journey.

Seats and special services may need two booking references

A codeshare seat is flown by the operating airline. Seat maps, paid-seat rules, meals, accessibility requests and infant handling can therefore sit in a different system from the site that sold the ticket.

If a seat map will not open, ask the ticketing airline for the operating carrier's reservation code. Then try that code on the operating airline's site. A missing seat assignment does not by itself show that the ticket failed, but it should be resolved before travel when adjacent seats or accessibility support matter.

Qatar Airways and WestJet have not published a joint public rule covering every ancillary service in the launch material. Confirm the actual request with the operating carrier and keep written evidence of any paid selection.

WestJet Rewards earning is confirmed, but other benefits need checking

WestJet says members can earn WestJet points on the full codeshare itinerary when they book through WestJet. Its current partner-airline guidance says a codeshare is identified by a WS flight number and earns in the same way as a regular WestJet flight.

That wording does not confirm Qatar Airways Privilege Club earning on every WestJet-operated segment. The launch releases also do not promise reciprocal lounge access, priority services, extra baggage, upgrades or broad status recognition. Qatar Airways is a oneworld member; WestJet is not. Do not assume alliance benefits apply merely because Qatar Airways markets the segment.

If points matter, save the fare basis, flight numbers and operating carriers before purchase. Add the intended loyalty number once, then check the posted activity after travel before requesting missing credit.

Mobile data at both ends of the journey

OpenSim's public catalog was checked on October 27. It listed five Canada eSIM plans from USD2.76 and five Qatar eSIM plans from USD3.26. All ten plans displayed as eligible for top-up at the time of review, but the live plan card should be checked again before purchase.

A Canada plan can help with airline messages, maps and onward transport around the domestic part of the trip. A Qatar plan can cover a Doha stay. Travelers continuing beyond Doha should choose for the countries actually visited rather than assuming a Canada or Qatar plan covers the whole onward itinerary.

An eSIM supplies mobile data on supported ground networks. It does not provide inflight Wi-Fi, protect a connection or let OpenSim change an airline ticket. Before purchase, check whether the phone supports eSIM, review when to install it and keep the airline itinerary available offline.

Ten questions about the Qatar Airways-WestJet codeshare

What does the Qatar Airways-WestJet codeshare change?

It lets WestJet market Qatar Airways' Toronto-Doha and Montréal-Doha flights and lets Qatar Airways market selected WestJet domestic connections. Eligible journeys can be issued as one booking with coordinated connections and through-checked bags.

Which Canadian connection cities are confirmed?

Qatar Airways names Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Ottawa, Regina, Saskatoon, St. John's and Winnipeg. WestJet says 11 connections in its headline but does not publish all eleven names, so do not guess the other two.

Can I book the full journey on one ticket?

Yes, when the eligible combination is offered as one through itinerary. Check the ticket number and all segments before paying. Two independently purchased reservations remain separate even if they involve the partner airlines.

Where will WestJet and Qatar Airways check my bag?

The airlines advertise through-checked baggage on eligible single-ticket itineraries. Confirm the airport printed on the bag tag and ask whether customs requires collection and recheck at any stop. Separate tickets do not receive this benefit automatically.

Which airline should I check in with?

Start with the airline operating the first flight. The booking should identify it with an “operated by” line. If online check-in fails, keep both reservation codes and allow time for an airport document check.

How do I select seats on both airlines?

Retrieve the operating carrier's booking reference from the confirmation or ticketing airline. Use that reference for its seat map. Seat availability, fees and assignment rules can differ by carrier and fare.

Will I earn WestJet points on Qatar Airways flights?

WestJet confirms earning on the full codeshare itinerary when it is booked through WestJet. Check for a WS flight number, add the WestJet Rewards number and retain the ticket until the points post.

Will I earn Qatar Airways Avios or receive oneworld benefits on WestJet?

The launch announcements do not confirm those benefits. WestJet is not a oneworld member. Check the current Qatar Airways earning table and the exact marketed flight before relying on Avios, Qpoints, lounge access or status benefits.

What happens if a connection is disrupted?

Start with the airline controlling the ticket, then follow the operating carrier for airport updates. A through ticket gives the airlines a coordinated itinerary to service, but the launch release does not create a universal rebooking outcome for every disruption.

Does the partnership protect separately booked flights?

No. A codeshare agreement does not combine separate tickets. If the first flight is late, the second airline can still apply its no-show and change rules. Leave a larger buffer or book the through itinerary when connection protection matters.

Booking checklist for a Canada-Doha connection

  • Confirm the marketing and operating carrier for every segment.
  • Check that the whole trip is on one issued ticket.
  • Compare the final fare after bags and seats.
  • Retrieve both airlines' reservation codes.
  • Read the bag allowance and final tag destination.
  • Verify any loyalty earning using the marketed flight number.
  • Leave enough time for customs, security and a terminal change.
  • Save the itinerary and support contacts offline.

Sources and changes to watch for this partnership

The Qatar Airways and WestJet releases establish the reciprocal codeshare, the Toronto and Montréal gateways, the named domestic connections and the announced single-booking benefits. WestJet's current partner pages establish its general check-in, baggage and Rewards guidance. Public traveler discussions were used to identify recurring questions about bags, seat assignments, partner references, check-in, loyalty credit, infant handling and separate tickets. They were not used as authority for airline policy.

Update this page when either airline publishes the complete 11-connection list, changes the Canada-Doha schedule, adds destinations, revises booking or baggage handling, or confirms broader loyalty and status benefits.
