Sinterklaas in Grave 2026: arrival, route and family travel

Grave hosts the national Sinterklaas arrival on Saturday, November 14, 2026. The boat is expected at the Maaskade around noon, followed by a procession through the old town to the Markt. Plan the journey and viewing place before you go: normal central parking is restricted, and the municipality revised several closure periods on October 22.
The municipality lists the event window as 12:00-16:00. That is the overall programme window, not a promise that Sinterklaas will reach every street at a specific minute. For families visiting the Netherlands, the arrival is a chance to see a public celebration rather than trying to join a private school or household event.
The photograph shows Grave's quay-side setting in July 2010. It does not show this year's boat, barriers or available parking.
Where to watch the arrival and procession
The official route page names the following streets in order:
Maaskade, Maasstraat, Korte Rogstraat, Oliestraat, Gasthuisstraat, Hamstraat, Sint Jorisstraat, Het Kasteeltje, Klinkerstraat, Rogstraat, then the stage on the Markt.
Choose a section that suits your group instead of trying to follow the entire procession. Moving repeatedly can mean losing your view and spending more time finding each other than watching. The municipality says screens will be placed at some locations, but the complete site arrangement and first-aid positions are still being finalized.
| Viewing choice | Why choose it? | What to resolve first |
|---|---|---|
| Maaskade | Seeing the boat arrive is your priority | Access, barriers and space to leave with your group |
| A procession street | You prefer to watch the passing parade | Which side to stand on and where you can cross |
| Markt | You want the finishing stage area | The current programme and any viewing arrangements |
Keep the Dutch street names in your saved map. They are more useful when asking a steward for directions than a translated label such as "the river entrance." Do not treat the list as an invitation to stand inside the cordoned route.
Parking changes: do not navigate to your usual central space
The municipality's amended traffic decision, published October 22, shortens several closure periods from the earlier decision. Two relevant examples are:
| Car park | Revised closure starts | Revised closure ends |
|---|---|---|
| Lunette | November 10 at 07:00 | End of November 15, at 24:00 |
| Poternen | November 11 at 07:00 | November 15 at 12:00 |
Both are therefore unavailable during the November 14 arrival. These examples are not a complete traffic plan. Check the municipal accessibility and traffic page, current signs and any later notices for your actual route. Some summary material still shows earlier dates; do not use an old screenshot as your final access instruction.
The municipality recommends public transport, cycling or walking. Drivers should follow the official parking route rather than assume a map app's shortest route is open. Resident or business access passes are not general visitor parking permits, and an access pass does not itself give parking rights.
If you book accommodation in the center, ask how you will reach it with luggage during the restrictions. Confirm a collection point outside the closed area for a taxi or transfer. Do not arrange a pickup in a street the driver cannot legally enter.
Arriving by public transport
Plan to the event area, not just to a regional railway station. Grave is not a rail station at the end of an intercity service; the last part of your journey needs its own check. Use a dated planner for November 14, then check it again close to departure for changed stops or event diversions.
9292's official app instructions explain how to search to an address, set an arrival time and add extra transfer time. Those options are useful with young children, a stroller or anyone who cannot hurry between services. Use the accessible-journey setting if needed, then check the walking section as well as the vehicle.
The NS app is another option for the rail part, ticket purchases and notifications about a changed connection. A train ticket is not confirmation of a reserved bus seat or an event shuttle.
We have not verified a final visitor shuttle timetable, fare or collection point for the arrival. The municipality is still adding practical information. Do not build a tight day trip around an assumed shuttle. Check the return journey before buying transport, and leave time to walk out of the event area.
Wheelchair viewing and other support
The municipal visitor page offers an application for a designated viewing area for people using a wheelchair or adapted buggy. Space is limited, with one companion per person. An application is not confirmation: the organizer will tell you whether a place is available and provide the location and access details.
Use the linked official application rather than arriving with an assumption that a space will be held. Ask about the route from your stop or drop-off, accessible toilets and the return journey when you receive the arrangements.
The municipality is also considering support for children with visual or hearing impairments, but says there is no separate viewing area for that support. Check the current page or contact [email protected] about your needs. Do not mistake a plan under development for a confirmed service.
Grave arrival house rules and family packing
Read the current house rules before packing. Bags may be checked. Pets are not permitted, with an exception for assistance dogs. Do not bring alcohol, drones, fireworks or flares. The rules also prohibit flags and flagpoles among potentially dangerous objects.
Cross the cordoned route only at a designated crossing when a steward or security worker permits it. Keep your group together and follow instructions if a viewing area fills. Do not step into the route for a photograph or to reach the opposite pavement.
For weather, the municipality recommends a raincoat rather than an umbrella, so other visitors can see. Add warm layers and shoes suitable for standing and walking. Keep the bag manageable enough to carry while helping a child.
Food, a drink, tissues and a charged phone are practical preparations, but check any updated entry rules before departure. If your child has dietary restrictions, bring a suitable option rather than relying on a treat handed out along the route. The organizer says gluten-free pepernoten are planned, but the request or distribution arrangements are not yet confirmed. Check before promising your child they can take part in that element.
Is the national arrival the right choice for your family?
A televised arrival can be exciting, but it can also involve waiting, noise and a long journey for a short view. Choose one part of the programme and a clear way out. A short visit is reasonable if your child has had enough; you do not need to remain until the final stage activity.
The municipality has not yet confirmed every toilet, first-aid and viewing location. Check the updated layout before leaving, and make a toilet and meal plan around your own family's needs. Shops and restaurants decide their own opening hours, so verify a meal stop rather than assuming everything nearby will be open.
If travel to Grave is too much, look for a locally organized arrival near your accommodation and verify that event's date separately. Do not copy the national date onto another town's parade. The broadcaster NTR confirms a live national broadcast from noon on NPO Zapp (NPO 3), with the Sinterklaasjournaal beginning November 9. Check online viewing availability for your location rather than assuming an overseas stream will work.
You do not need fluent Dutch to watch a procession, but songs, announcements and the story are not a guaranteed English-language performance. Explain the basic idea to children beforehand and keep expectations simple. Our Netherlands with kids guide helps with the rest of the trip.
Maps, travel updates and mobile data in Grave
Save the current route, your return stop and one agreed meeting point before your group sets out. A downloaded map helps with orientation, but check live operator updates for a diverted bus. Keep the accommodation address and any confirmed accessible-viewing instructions available without needing to search your email in a crowd.
OpenSim's Netherlands plans listed 1GB for 7 days at US$1.24 and 3GB for 15 days at US$3.00, both eligible for top-up, when checked on October 23. Mobile data is useful outside accommodation Wi-Fi for a changed route, a message to your group or an updated municipal notice. It does not make a closed road accessible or guarantee reception during the event.
If your existing mobile plan covers the Netherlands at a suitable cost, you may not need another purchase. Otherwise use our data calculator, phone compatibility guide and installation timing guide. Check the selected package's current terms, including whether it supplies anything beyond data.
