Christmas market huts and illuminated trees at Tivoli Gardens in December 2015

Christmas in Tivoli runs from November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027. You can visit for the lights, stalls and food without buying a Ride Pass. If rides are the main reason you are going, compare a combined admission-and-rides package before paying. Check the calendar for your exact date, especially around Christmas.

Tivoli's Christmas season page confirms the dates and seasonal attractions. The photograph above shows a previous Christmas season in 2015, not the displays being prepared for this year.

This is a ticketed garden visit in central Copenhagen, so give it a proper place in your budget. A brief look at a free street market and an afternoon inside Tivoli are different plans.

When does Tivoli open for Christmas, and when is it closed?

The official seasons calendar separates Halloween, which ends November 1, from Christmas, which begins November 13. The gardens are not continuously open between those seasons. Do not book a November 2-12 city break assuming that a performance listed inside a Tivoli theatre means the Christmas garden is open.

The Copenhagen Card attraction page lists December 24, 2026 as closed. The season continues into the new year, but individual activities have shorter runs. Check daily opening hours directly before setting out rather than applying one weekend's closing time to the whole season.

For a short trip, confirm the garden date before arranging your other timed visits. Keep arrival day flexible if a delayed flight would leave you with little time to use a date-specific ticket.

Which ticket do you need for lights, markets and rides?

Tivoli's ticket FAQ distinguishes these products:

ProductWhat it covers
EntranceAccess to the gardens, not rides
Ride PassRides, but not garden admission
Entrance + Ride Pass packageBoth admission and rides

Prices vary by date and sometimes arrival time. Select your date in the official ticket shop before comparing totals. Tivoli's own tickets are generally non-refundable; read the applicable change terms before buying.

For a lights-and-food visit, admission alone is a sensible starting point. For several rides, compare the package with the rides you would otherwise pay for. You do not need the same purchase for every adult: someone accompanying children may want a different afternoon from the person who plans to ride repeatedly.

Do the comparison for your actual group, including children's ages. A headline "from" price is not your final family total, and a discount has little value if you will not use what it includes.

Does Copenhagen Card include Tivoli at Christmas?

The Copenhagen Card page lists one Tivoli admission per card, with rides separate and a discounted Ride Pass option. If you already hold a card covering the visit, check its terms before buying another entrance ticket.

It also notes same-day re-entry arrangements and event exceptions. Tivoli's own FAQ directs guests seeking a re-entry stamp to the Food Hall exit. Ask staff before leaving; do not assume every exit or special event allows you to return.

A city card should be judged against your whole Copenhagen itinerary. Compare the attractions and transport you genuinely plan to use, rather than adding visits simply to make a pass appear worthwhile.

Father Christmas leaves before the Christmas season ends

The official Father Christmas programme lists visits at the Open-Air Stage from November 13 through December 23, included with garden admission. That matters if you are travelling between Christmas and New Year: an open garden does not mean this activity continues.

The listing gives weekday opening at noon and weekend opening at 11:00 through December 21, then 11:00 on December 22-23. Breaks interrupt the day, and the queue may close up to an hour before a break. Check the day's schedule before joining it.

Professional Christmas photographs cost extra, and visitors are asked not to take their own photographs inside the house. The listing also states no wheelchair access. Contact Tivoli about an alternative arrangement before promising the visit to someone who needs step-free access.

Keep this as one part of the outing. If the queue is longer than your child can manage, have another activity ready rather than spending the afternoon waiting for a single photograph.

Should you arrive in daylight or after dark?

For a first visit, consider arriving while you still have time to find your bearings, then staying for the illuminated garden. That gives you a chance to locate food, toilets and your preferred rides before settling into an evening visit.

Choose a shorter plan if cold, tiredness or a late arrival would make that uncomfortable. A couple who mainly want decorations and dinner do not need to follow a family's ride schedule. Equally, children who are ready to leave should not have to wait for every planned photograph.

Wear layers, bring a rain-resistant outer layer and choose shoes you can walk and stand in. Keep gloves available rather than packed at the bottom of a suitcase. Check the forecast for your own date; a Christmas photograph is not evidence that snow is likely during your stay.

Tivoli says rides can stop for weather or operational reasons and does not guarantee a particular ride. Do not build an expensive day around one attraction without checking its status.

Planning with children or accessibility needs

The official family guide explains that children under three enter free, but ride arrangements have their own age and height rules. Free garden admission does not mean a young child can use every ride without another purchase or a suitable companion.

Check the actual ride page before buying a pass. Make a short list of attractions the child can use and wants to try. This is more useful than buying for the largest possible number of rides.

Tivoli's accessibility information describes companion arrangements, documentation and the Show Consideration scheme. Overseas visitors without a Danish Companion Card are asked for medical documentation. Eligibility and access vary; confirm your circumstances with Tivoli rather than treating a general accessibility statement as approval for every ride.

For a wider family trip, use the Denmark with kids guide. Keep this visit's ticket choices separate from the rest of the holiday budget.

Getting there and keeping the evening manageable

Tivoli's FAQ identifies Vesterbrogade 3 as the main entrance and a second entrance on Bernstorffsgade beside Copenhagen Central Station. Save the entrance you intend to use, not just a pin in the middle of the gardens.

Plan the journey from your accommodation and the return trip before buying a late visit. If you are leaving Copenhagen afterwards, leave time to collect luggage and reach the departure platform or airport. The end of a garden visit is not the departure time of your train.

Choose one fixed meeting place if your group separates. Share the location and a time, then keep a plan that still works when one phone has no battery. Leave enough time for a meal or a warm break instead of filling every available hour with rides.

Use the Tivoli app and save your Copenhagen travel details

The official Tivoli app includes ticket purchases, the day's programme, a garden map and restaurant bookings. Install it and check that your tickets or pass are available before leaving your accommodation. Use the official garden map to identify the places that matter to your group.

Save your booking reference and accommodation address separately. A screenshot is useful for information, but check whether your particular ticket requires the live app or barcode. Do not assume every app function works offline.

For mobile data beyond available Wi-Fi, OpenSim Denmark plans can support finding an entrance, checking the next journey and messaging your group during the wider trip. The public catalog checked on October 22 listed 1GB for 7 days at US$1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at US$3.00, both eligible for top-up. Recheck the selected option at purchase; those facts do not establish a rule for every plan.

If your existing mobile plan already includes Denmark on suitable terms, that may be enough. OpenSim's practical fit is a separate allowance for visitors who need one, not a promise of faster service inside Tivoli or a way to skip queues.

Check phone compatibility, installation timing and the travel data calculator before choosing an allowance for the whole holiday.
