Arashiyama Bamboo Light-up 2026: free areas and tickets

Arashiyama Bamboo Light-up, also called Tsukitouro, runs until Sunday, November 8, 2026. The event has a free illuminated path and separate paid areas, so you do not need to treat the whole bamboo grove as one ticketed attraction. Decide which part you want to see before choosing a ticket or making a late journey across Kyoto.
The dates matter as much as the price. This bamboo event finishes before several November temple illuminations begin. A late-November foliage itinerary does not automatically include it.
Dates, prices and the evening opening window
The organizer's English page lists the following details. All times are local to Kyoto.
| Detail | Published information |
|---|---|
| Event dates | September 30-November 8, 2026 |
| Evening hours | 18:00-21:00 |
| Last admission | Organizer and EX ticket page: 20:40 |
| Same-day paid-area admission | JPY1,500, cash at the venue |
| Online paid-area admission | JPY2,000 through EX |
| Children | Ages 12 and under free on the organizer's page |
Do not plan to arrive at the cutoff. Kyoto's October 19 night-visit listing gives an earlier 20:30 last entry. Allow time for the approach and any admission queue, then follow the current on-site instruction.
The ticket-booth time also needs care: the Japanese organizer page carries a 17:30 sales-start notice near the top but still says 17:50 lower down. Its English page says 17:50. Check the current organizer notice before travelling rather than relying on an exact queue-start time. Bring yen if you intend to buy there.
The free bamboo path versus paid Areas 1 and 2
JR Central's official ticket description distinguishes the illuminated Bamboo Forest Path in the free area from the additional lantern displays in paid Areas 1 and 2. Its advance product covers those paid areas.
That makes a free-area visit a legitimate choice, not a failed attempt to buy a ticket. The paid option is for visitors who want those additional displays. The boundary and entrance should be checked on the organizer's venue guidance and signs; do not infer them from a photograph or an old map pin.
Keep the outing manageable. If your group has already spent the day walking, choose a section you can enjoy rather than adding every nearby attraction. An evening event is not evidence that every temple, garden, cafe or path in Arashiyama will remain open.
Should you pay JPY500 more for an advance ticket?
An EX advance reservation avoids the same-day ticket-purchase line. It does not promise an empty entrance or a crowd-free walk. The official seller warns that waits and capacity restrictions can still occur.
| Your situation | A practical choice |
|---|---|
| You only want the illuminated public path | Start with the free-area option |
| The paid displays are important and you can use EX | Check an advance ticket for your exact date |
| You prefer the lower same-day price | Bring cash and allow for a queue or restricted sales |
| Online tickets show sold out | Check the organizer's same-day notice; admission is not guaranteed |
The JR Central autumn campaign says EX activity purchases require Express Reservation or Smart EX membership. An online calendar is therefore not the whole booking process. Check that your account and payment work before making the paid area the fixed point of your evening.
The seller says on-site tickets may still be offered when online tickets are sold out, but sales can be suspended for capacity reasons. Do not interpret either message as a guarantee that you can buy at the door.
Getting there and planning the return
The event organizer recommends public transport and gives approximate walks of ten minutes from the JR Sagano Line or Randen Arashiyama, and fifteen minutes from Hankyu Arashiyama. Treat those as orientation, not a transfer guarantee: the ticket seller gives different walking estimates to its paid-area reception.
Choose your destination station and your entrance together. JR Saga-Arashiyama, Randen Arashiyama and Hankyu Arashiyama are different stations. Save the return station's name and a route to your accommodation, including any transfer, before setting off.
Use a journey-planning tool such as Google Maps for the return and a browser with translation for Japanese notices. Download an offline map for orientation, but check live rail services while connected. Do not assume the last admission time tells you when your last useful train leaves.
For a combined day, keep the bamboo evening flexible around separately booked train, boat or temple visits. A delayed earlier activity can consume your admission window. Leave time to eat, charge your phone and reassess the plan rather than joining several tight connections together.
Visiting after November 8? Choose a different night opening
The Hogon-in temple announcement gives November 13-December 6 for its 2026 autumn night visits. Those dates do not overlap with Tsukitouro's published run. You cannot see both evening programmes on one day simply because both are in Arashiyama.
For other dates, use the city's night-visit directory, then confirm the individual venue. Separate programmes have their own entry rules and tickets. Do not reuse the bamboo event's prices or opening window for a temple.
Our Japan with kids guide covers wider family choices. For this outing, ask the organizer about the exact route if a wheelchair, stroller or uneven surface will decide whether you can attend. A short distance or attractive night photograph does not establish accessibility.
Keep your ticket connected, with maps saved separately
The EX listing requires an internet-connected smartphone or tablet for its electronic ticket. Keep the original booking link available and open it before joining the entrance line. A saved map is useful preparation, but do not assume a ticket screenshot will replace the seller's check-in process.
This is a relevant use for OpenSim Japan data: accessing the booking page and checking a changed return journey away from accommodation Wi-Fi. The public catalog, checked October 25, lists a fixed 1GB, seven-day plan at USD1.40 and 3GB for 15 days at USD3.40, both supporting top-up. Check the selected package and checkout total before buying.
A small fixed allowance can suit a visitor who needs mobile access for tickets and transport rather than a large data package. If your existing plan already includes Japan at no extra cost, that may be the better choice. Neither option guarantees a working ticket website, an uncongested network or admission.
Use the travel data calculator for the whole trip, our phone compatibility guide before purchase, and the installation timing guide before departure. The Japan connectivity guide covers the broader plan decision without repeating it here.
Sources and updates
Event dates, the free-versus-paid distinction, ticket terms and the conflicting time notices were checked against the linked organizer, JR Central and Kyoto tourism pages on October 25, 2026. Recheck the organizer for weather-related cancellation and current admission instructions. This guide will be updated for material changes to the event dates, ticket route, entry notices or venue access.
