Market chalets and illuminated trees on Bruges Markt in December 2017

Bruges Winter Glow runs from November 20, 2026 to January 31, 2027, but its Christmas markets, ice rink and IJsgloed winter bar finish on January 3. A later January visit is a different trip, built around selected cultural activities and the Winter Giant finale rather than Christmas stalls.

There is another important change for anyone planning around a light show. The city's October 16 announcement says the new St Saviour's Cathedral light-and-music experience is being developed for winter 2027-28. Do not book this season's visit expecting that performance, even if an older guide still advertises it.

Choose dates for the part of Winter Glow you want

The current Winter Glow overview describes a season of separate paid and free activities. It is not a single attraction that operates unchanged every day.

PlanConfirmed periodWhat to check before booking
Christmas markets at Markt and Simon StevinpleinNovember 20-January 3Market hours and your evening return
IJsgloed skating and winter barNovember 20-January 3Rink holiday exceptions and activity costs
Handmade in Brugge MAKERSmarktDecember 18-20Its short opening window and venue
Winter Giant building workshopsSelected blocks from November 17-January 24The actual workshop date, not just the season
Uitwijken WinterJanuary 26-29Neighbourhood programme and locations
Winter Giant finaleJanuary 30-31Final timing and route when released

The city's dated programme announcement distinguishes these periods. If stalls and skating are the reason you are travelling, choose a date no later than January 3. If the Giant is the attraction, the final January weekend is the relevant one.

Do not assume the intervening weeks contain the same daily programme. Before paying for accommodation, identify one confirmed activity for your actual date and decide whether Bruges itself is enough reason for the rest of the stay.

The cathedral show is deferred to winter 2027-28

In its October 16 update, the City of Bruges places further development of the cathedral light-and-music experience in Winter Glow 2027-28. That supersedes earlier plans describing a November 2026 start.

Ordinary festive lighting around the city is not the same as a scheduled cathedral performance. A winter walk can still be enjoyable, but do not allocate a ticket budget or an evening slot to an unconfirmed show. For this visit, use the currently listed markets, skating, makers' event or dated January activities as the basis for your plan.

There is no need to recreate an older walking light trail from a saved map. Check the current programme for the edition you are visiting rather than treating photographs or a previous year's itinerary as operating instructions.

Christmas-market hours and a short city route

Visit Bruges lists the markets from November 20 through January 3, with these hours:

  • Sunday-Thursday: 11:00-22:00.
  • Friday-Saturday: 11:00-23:30.
  • New Year's Eve: opening extends until 03:00.

The two market squares are Markt and Simon Stevinplein. For a first visit, choose them as your central outing, with time for a meal or a warm break. Add skating separately if your group wants it rather than treating every advertised activity as compulsory.

If you arrive by train, decide whether to visit the rink before the central markets or after them. Check the walk against your group's pace and accommodation address. Carrying luggage, pushing a stroller and stopping for food can change what fits into the afternoon.

For a short trip, one unhurried evening is more useful than a plan that depends on reaching every stop just before closing. New Year's Eve market hours also do not establish the last train time, restaurant availability or any separate entertainment programme.

Skating: use the dated 2026 listing, not the old FAQ price

The 2026 IJsgloed rink listing places the rink in Koning Albert I-Park and publishes an individual rate of EUR9. It lists EUR8 for groups of ten or more and EUR0 for children up to and including age three. Confirm the selected activity's current conditions before paying; a price category alone is not advice that skating suits a particular child.

DatePublished rink hours
Regular operating days, November 20-January 310:00-22:00
December 24 and December 3110:00-17:00
December 25 and January 112:00-22:00

The event listing asks visitors to check the organizer's current information too. Do not infer skate hire, session length, payment methods or availability from an older season's description.

The Winter Glow FAQ explicitly warns that it still contains 2025-26 information. Its old prices and dates are not the basis for a 2026 purchase. The same caution applies to last year's holiday bus arrangements.

December makers' market and the January Giant

The Handmade in Brugge MAKERSmarkt is a three-day event at the Jan Garemijnzaal, Markt 7. Admission is free. Its published hours are December 18 from 16:00-20:00, then December 19 and 20 from 11:00-18:00. It can be a focused extra stop for someone who wants to browse local makers rather than add another general shopping circuit.

January has a different emphasis. The Winter Giant page confirms appearances on January 30 and 31. Check the final schedule before arranging transport; a confirmed weekend is not yet a departure time or a complete parade route.

People interested in the building process can check the open workshop at House of Time, Komvest 45. Published blocks are November 17-22, December 1-6, December 8-13, December 15-20 and January 19-24. Within those blocks, hours are Tuesday-Friday 14:00-17:00 and Saturday-Sunday 10:00-16:00.

This is not a workshop operating continuously from November to January. Check the date with the venue and ask about participation if your group has specific needs. You can choose the final spectacle without committing to a building session.

Day trip or overnight stay?

A day trip suits a visitor who wants one market outing and has a verified return after it. Work backward from the last connection you are willing to take. Include the walk to the station and time for delays; the market's closing time should not be your departure deadline.

An overnight stay can make sense if you want an evening meal without checking the clock, have children who need a break, or are combining a separately booked attraction with the markets. Two nights leave room for a slower morning and weather changes. Neither length guarantees empty squares or good weather.

For a wider family holiday, use our Belgium with kids guide. That page helps choose destinations and a longer itinerary; this guide deals with the dated Bruges winter programme.

Trains, local transport and useful apps

Visit Bruges' general travel guide says to use Brugge station, not Brugge Sint-Pieters, for the historic centre. It gives an approximately one-hour train journey from Brussels-South and about a 20-minute walk from Brugge station to Markt. Those are planning estimates, not guarantees for a particular departure or walking pace.

Use the Belgian Railways journey planner linked from that guide for your actual travel date. The SNCB/NMBS service is the place to check the rail connection and ticket; De Lijn provides local bus planning. Save the return route as well as the outward journey.

The event mobility page currently labels its detailed information as belonging to 2025-26. Do not carry its free-bus dates, parking arrangements or Christmas Eve departures forward to this season. Check current operator information before deciding that a shuttle or bus will be free or run late enough.

If driving, check the car park and your accommodation's arrival instructions before entering the centre. A hotel address near a market does not automatically permit vehicle access to its street. For a simple city visit, compare the train with parking and onward transport before committing to a car.

Access, cold weather and meal planning

The official accessibility guide provides route guidance, accessible-toilet information and details of selected venues. Use it for your chosen outing and ask individual venues about access. A city-wide winter event does not establish that every stall, activity or entrance suits the same needs.

With a stroller or limited stamina, plan a short central route and a warm break. Check the forecast close to departure and bring clothing suitable for the conditions. Do not choose a long outdoor evening only because a photograph shows clear skies.

For Christmas Eve, Christmas Day or New Year's Eve, confirm meals directly with the restaurant. A market or rink being open does not mean a nearby kitchen has a table or serves at your preferred time. Booking the meal that would be hardest to replace can make the rest of the visit more flexible.

Mobile data for a Belgium city break

Download the day's plan, tickets and accommodation address before leaving Wi-Fi. Keep the operator's latest timetable separate from an offline street map, and agree where to meet if the group splits up. Mobile data helps with revised departures and messages; it does not change an event's opening time.

For visitors whose home allowance does not include Belgium, the OpenSim Belgium catalog listed 1GB for seven days at USD1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at USD3.00 on October 25, both with top-up available. A small fixed allowance can suit a short Bruges visit without buying a broader plan you do not need. Confirm your selected plan and phone before purchase.

If your existing plan already includes enough Belgium data at no extra cost, another purchase may be unnecessary. Use the travel data calculator, phone compatibility guide and installation-timing guide for those separate decisions.
