Dublin Winter Lights 2027: January move and December alternatives

Coloured light projections on Dublin's Custom House with passing bus light trails in December 2021

Dublin Winter Lights moves to January 2027. The council plans a mid-January start through the St Brigid's/Imbolc public-holiday weekend; its full programme is due in December. Christmas 2026 has separate lighting and events.

The change matters before you book an evening around Merrion Square or choose a weekend specifically for the festival. Christmas street lighting, TwinkleTrail, TwinkleTown and separately ticketed attractions are not all the same event.

What is confirmed for Dublin Winter Lights 2027?

The council's September 22 announcement describes a free festival intended to bring activity into the post-Christmas period. An exact opening date and final map are not yet provided.

Use the official Winter Lights website for the forthcoming programme. It says locations and activities will be revealed in December, while still displaying older installation pages marked finished. An existing photograph or location description is not confirmation that the same work returns.

For a trip built around the festival, wait for the dated programme before committing to a particular evening. If you book accommodation sooner, compare change and cancellation terms. Do not turn a broad mid-January announcement into a specific opening-night reservation.

Is Dublin losing its Christmas lights in December?

No. The council's September 24 Christmas announcement describes separate December installations and projections, including the GPO, City Hall, Samuel Beckett Bridge and Millennium Bridge. It also announces an expanded TwinkleTrail and TwinkleTown events at Smithfield Square and St Patrick's Park.

That announcement says the full Christmas programme will be revealed in November. It is not a final walking map or a promise that every display runs throughout your stay. Check the current programme for dates and hours rather than assuming all the city's lights switch on together.

Choose the experience first, then the date. A market booking does not reserve a place at a different light installation, and an old Merrion Square confirmation cannot establish the conditions for the next festival.

Can you book Merrion Square lights now?

The official Merrion Square installation page is currently marked Event Now Finished. Its description and ticket links should not be treated as a newly confirmed 2027 booking offer.

The older Dublin.ie park listing is also marked ended. Its previous admission offer, December dates and entry information do not establish next season's prices, child allowances, entrance or walk-in rules.

When a new booking page appears, check the year, event location and selected session before paying. Read the actual child-age conditions and any separate relaxed-viewing arrangements. Do not assume a historical family offer still applies or that a public park means unrestricted entry during a ticketed installation.

If a link still opens an old season, return to the organizer's current programme rather than buying through an unrelated resale post. A ticket offered by another visitor may be for a different date or attraction.

A separate December option: Everwinter at the RDS

Everwinter's current programme runs from November 25, 2026 to January 3, 2027, but the full site operates only through December 23. From December 26 to January 3, its published offer is the ice rink only. It lists Monday closures.

General entry covers the market, music and wider site; skating, the circus and fairground rides are separate bookings. Check the selected ticket rather than treating general admission as an all-activities pass. This is a different event from Winter Lights.

Its arrival guidance places the entrance on Merrion Road and says there is no event parking. Lansdowne Road and Sandymount DART stations are its suggested nearby rail options. Check the live journey and allow for your group's walking pace; a station name alone does not settle step-free access or the return service.

For December 26 onward, do not book expecting the full pre-Christmas market and circus programme. For a late-November visit, check the actual day of the week and admission availability before building dinner or transport around it.

How to plan a city-centre lights evening

Until the final map is available, plan a flexible evening rather than a route through every installation from a previous year. Pick one confirmed area near your accommodation or dinner, then add another stop only if the weather and group still suit it.

Keep the north-side GPO and O'Connell Street area separate in your planning from a south-side park visit. For any river crossing, use a pedestrian route and name a specific meeting point. "By the lights" is not enough when several streets and buildings have displays.

For families, a short outdoor stop followed by a meal can be more manageable than a long circuit with a late ticket at the end. Check each attraction's age and buggy conditions before booking. General family itineraries belong in our Ireland with kids guide; this page covers the changed lights season.

Leave indoor time available if conditions turn unpleasant. Check Met Éireann's Dublin forecast close to the visit, rather than using an October forecast to predict a January evening. Look at warnings as well as temperature, and follow any organizer closure notice.

Getting into Dublin and back to your accommodation

For arrival by air, Dublin Airport's bus information links terminal pickup maps and city services. Find the stop for your accommodation, then check that operator's baggage rules, fare and timetable. A city transport card does not automatically cover every commercial airport coach.

Use TFI Live for journey planning, timetables and live departures across participating bus, tram and rail services. Save the stop or journey you need, and search the actual evening rather than relying on a normal weekday schedule. The app's planning and real-time features do not require an account.

Check the return before leaving your accommodation, particularly for a timed activity outside the centre. Keep a second option if the first connection does not work. Allow for the walk from the installation to the stop, not just the advertised end time.

If accessibility is important, confirm the whole journey: arrival stop, walking surface, entrance, toilets and return connection. An older festival's relaxed session or one venue's access statement cannot establish provision at all the next edition's locations.

Keep tickets, the map and your group reachable

Save your accommodation address, booking reference and the accepted ticket format before leaving Wi-Fi. Some tickets must be displayed in the issuer's app; a screenshot is not always an entry ticket. Share one clear meeting point and a fallback plan with your group.

If your existing mobile plan includes enough Irish data, you may not need another package. Otherwise, OpenSim Ireland plans give you a separate allowance for checking TFI Live, retrieving booking messages and contacting your group while away from Wi-Fi. On October 24, the public catalog listed 1 GB for 7 days at USD 1.14 and 3 GB for 15 days at USD 3.00, both with top-up available. Confirm the selected plan's current price and terms.

Mobile data does not reserve a session or guarantee reception in a crowd. Check phone compatibility, review installation timing and estimate your allowance with the travel data calculator.

Before booking a winter weekend

  1. Decide whether your trip is for December festivities or January's Winter Lights.
  2. Check the current organizer page, year and exact location.
  3. Keep the evening flexible until the final programme is published.
  4. Compare admission with any separately charged activities.
  5. Check child, accessibility and cancellation conditions for that booking.
  6. Plan the return journey and save the ticket in an accepted format.

OpenSim editorial team checked the linked council announcements, event pages, transport guidance and public package information on October 24, 2026. Exact Winter Lights dates, locations and any session-specific terms remain subject to the forthcoming programme. Recheck Christmas details in November and the Winter Lights programme in December before making a dedicated trip.
