Vienna Christmas markets 2026: choose dates before your route

Vienna's Christmas markets open on different dates. Schönbrunn starts November 6, Rathausplatz follows November 13, and Prater's Wintermarkt begins November 20. For a visit after Christmas, check the market rather than assuming the whole city follows one calendar.
This is a focused guide to three useful options, not a directory of every stall in Vienna. Choose by the dates you can travel, then give each outing enough time for food, a warm break and the journey back. Trying to collect several distant markets in one evening can leave you spending more time on trains than at the stalls.
Which Vienna markets fit your travel dates?
The dates below come from the operators' current 2026/27 pages. All times are local. The most important distinction is at Rathausplatz: the Christmas market ends December 26, but its ice rink continues until January 6. A rink operating date is not a promise that the market stalls remain open.
| Place | Published season | Usual opening hours | Christmas Eve, December 24 | Useful station |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rathausplatz Christmas market | November 13 to December 26, 2026 | 10:00 to 22:00 daily | 10:00 to 18:30 | U2 Rathaus |
| Ice Dream at Rathausplatz | November 13, 2026 to January 6, 2027 | 10:00 to 22:00; closed December 31 | 10:00 to 18:30 | U2 Rathaus |
| Schönbrunn Palace Christmas market | November 6, 2026 to January 6, 2027 | 10:00 to 21:00 through December 23; 10:00 to 19:00 from December 25 | 10:00 to 16:00 | U4 Schönbrunn or Hietzing |
| Wintermarkt at Prater's Riesenradplatz | November 20, 2026 to January 6, 2027 | Weekdays 12:00 to 22:00; weekends and public holidays 11:00 to 22:00 | 11:00 to 17:00 | U1/U2 Praterstern |
For New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, check Prater's separate holiday timetable rather than applying its usual hours. This table does not describe every Vienna market, palace opening time or ride.
Before November 13: plan around Schönbrunn
If you are arriving November 6 to 12, make Schönbrunn the market outing among these choices. Do not put Rathausplatz's stalls or Prater's Wintermarkt into an itinerary before their opening dates.
A palace visit and the market can share a day, but they are separate activities. Check the palace's own admission and selected entry time before adding it. Keep the evening flexible if your arrival flight is delayed; an opening date does not make a tight airport-to-attraction connection sensible.
November 13 to 19: add Rathausplatz, not Prater's market
Rathausplatz becomes an option in this window. For a two-night stay, spend one outing there and another at Schönbrunn instead of crossing the city repeatedly. Prater itself is a different question from its winter market, which has not yet opened.
November 20 to December 23: choose by the experience
All three markets in this guide are scheduled to operate. Start with Rathausplatz for the City Hall setting, Schönbrunn for a palace-based day, or Riesenradplatz for a visit that can include separately chosen Prater attractions.
Pick one main destination per evening. If you want a second stop, look at the actual journey and your group's energy before committing. A list of station names is not a timed itinerary.
December 24 onward: reserve meals separately
Christmas Eve has shorter hours at all three. Visit earlier, then arrange dinner with a restaurant that confirms it is serving on your date. A market's closing time tells you nothing about a nearby restaurant's kitchen.
For December 25 and 26, Rathausplatz's published season still includes those dates. From December 27, choose Schönbrunn or Prater for a market visit among these options; use Rathausplatz only if you specifically want its continuing ice activity. Do not travel expecting the same stalls and programme as the week before Christmas.
Rathausplatz: market visit or skating session?
Use the Rathausplatz organizer's timetable to distinguish the market, its seasonal rink and the later Viennese Ice Dream. That larger winter skating event is listed separately for January 22 to March 7, 2027. It is not continuous with every Christmas-market activity.
The organizer lists trams 1, 71 and D to Rathausplatz/Burgtheater as well as U2 Rathaus. Choose the stop that works from your accommodation rather than insisting on one route across the city.
If skating matters to your visit, check its own admission, equipment and session conditions before leaving. Do not interpret a market listing as a skating ticket. For a mixed group, decide whether everyone wants to skate or whether some people would prefer a shorter visit and a meal.
Schönbrunn: free market entry, separate activities
The market's information page explicitly says admission to the market itself is free and no entry ticket is required. That does not establish free palace admission, rides, workshops or skate hire.
The operator describes access from U4 Schönbrunn or Hietzing as roughly 600 metres on foot. Allow for that walk in cold or wet conditions, especially with small children. It also lists trams 10 and 60 and bus 10A at Schloss Schönbrunn.
For families and visitors with access needs, the same page confirms an accessible toilet and baby-changing facilities in the market's Ehrenhof, next to the straw maze. Read the current access details for your own requirements rather than treating one facility as proof that the whole day will be effortless.
The 2026 market announcement confirms the season through January 6. Save the specific date and holiday hours, not just the homepage header: some older season labels remain elsewhere on the site.
Prater: winter market entry is not a ride pass
The Wintermarkt FAQ states that admission is free. It describes a winter event at Riesenradplatz, with food, music and attractions; it is not confirmation that every ride across the wider Wurstelprater operates in winter.
The operator says some outdoor businesses can close in bad weather. The wider amusement area's main season ends in October, with selected businesses operating during suitable winter conditions. Check the particular attraction you want, including its price and hours, before promising children a ride.
For arrival, Prater's transport guidance names Praterstern, served by U1 and U2, as the nearby public-transport stop. Follow the signs toward Riesenradplatz rather than treating the whole Prater as one entrance. Save the return journey as well as the outward route.
A manageable two-day Vienna market plan
On your first afternoon, settle into your accommodation before choosing a nearby meal and Rathausplatz visit, provided it is open on your dates. Leave skating optional. For a family or anyone who dislikes dense crowds, start earlier and decide on the spot whether to stay into the evening. Earlier arrival is a planning choice, not a guarantee of empty walkways.
Use the second day for Schönbrunn. If you book the palace, leave a gap afterward instead of assuming the tour ends exactly when everyone is ready to walk outside. Eat, browse and head back when the group has had enough. Prater works better as a substitute for this outing, or a separate third visit, than a compulsory final stop after two markets.

Transport tickets, useful apps and cash
WienMobil is Wiener Linien's official app for route planning, ticket purchases and live transport information. Search the date and time you intend to return. A normal weekday route may not describe holiday service or a disruption on the night.
The Vienna core-zone guidance makes an important airport distinction: Vienna Airport is outside the core zone. A city-only ticket does not cover the whole airport trip. Check the ticket for your selected train or bus instead of assuming a city pass includes the transfer.
Compare transport-only and tourist-card products against journeys and attractions you will actually use. Do not buy a discount card solely because you plan to walk around a free-entry market. For digital tickets, follow the issuer's display and activation rules; a saved screenshot is not automatically valid.
Carry a payment card and some cash rather than assuming every stall accepts the same method. Ask about any mug deposit before ordering, including where and when you can return the cup. Keep a small spending allowance separate from your transport and meal budget. We have not published a universal 2026 food price or deposit because each vendor's terms matter.
Keep the route available away from Wi-Fi
Save your accommodation address, chosen market hours and return stop before going out. Give your group a specific meeting point away from a busy entrance. Offline maps help with the walk, while live service changes and new messages still need a connection.
If your usual plan already includes adequate Austrian data, use it. If it does not, OpenSim Austria plans provide a separate allowance for checking the next connection, retrieving a booking or messaging your group without returning to accommodation Wi-Fi. On October 24, the public catalog listed 1 GB for 7 days at USD 1.14 and 3 GB for 15 days at USD 3.00, both with top-up available. Confirm the selected package's current price and terms.
That can fit a short Vienna stay better than buying a larger multi-country package you will not use. If your route continues elsewhere, compare its country coverage through our Europe eSIM comparison instead. Mobile data does not guarantee reception in a crowd or make a closed attraction available.
Check phone compatibility, review when to install before travel, and use the travel data calculator before choosing an allowance.
What to check before leaving for the market
- Match the operator's opening date and holiday hours to your visit.
- Separate market entry from the palace, rink or ride you want to add.
- Confirm dinner rather than relying on the stalls for a late meal.
- Check the outward and return journey, including any airport fare boundary.
- Save the route, bring weather-appropriate layers and keep a flexible stopping point.
OpenSim editorial team checked the linked operator pages, transport information and public package catalog on October 24, 2026. Recheck the relevant organizer shortly before travel, particularly for holiday hours, weather-related closures and activity bookings. This stable guide will be updated when confirmed operating details change.
