Ji.hlava festival 2026: tickets, reservations and a visit plan

The 30th Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival runs from October 23 to November 1, 2026, in Jihlava, Czechia. You do not need a full pass for a short visit: the organizer's October 21 ticket notice confirms same-day online tickets for bookable screenings. Choose your films, check their subtitles and arrange the journey home before paying.
The festival's programme includes documentaries, discussions and events beyond the cinema. Admission works differently for a reserved screening, a passholder hoping for a spare seat and a designated Catch-Up screening. Knowing which one you are booking matters more than filling every hour of the day.

Can you buy a ticket without festival accreditation?
Yes. The single-ticket instructions list CZK 250 for a normal screening, bought online or at Masaryk Square's Reservation and Information desk.
Sales run from 08:00 on the screening's day until five minutes before it starts. Online buyers verify their email and receive PDF tickets. Save yours before travelling.
Arrive at least five minutes before the start to keep the included reservation. Tickets are non-refundable. Leave enough time to find the entrance.
For an occasional visitor, one or two selected films can be a more sensible commitment than a pass. Check availability before making a journey solely for one title, and keep a second choice that fits your interests and return transport.
Which festival pass fits a longer stay?
The 2026 accreditation page lists the current autumn options:
| Pass | Valid dates | Published price |
|---|---|---|
| Six-day, Friday to Wednesday | October 23-28 | CZK 1,700 |
| Six-day, Sunday to Friday | October 25-30 | CZK 1,700 |
| Six-day, Tuesday to Sunday | October 27-November 1 | CZK 1,700 |
| Ten-day | October 23-November 1 | CZK 1,900 |
Choose the fixed six-day window matching your stay. The ten-day pass is CZK 200 more.
At CZK 250 per normal single ticket, seven tickets total CZK 1,750 and eight total CZK 2,000. That comparison helps with budgeting; it does not guarantee that a pass will secure every film you want. Count realistic screenings rather than theoretical maximums.
Accreditation requires an Eventival profile and a photograph. The organizer says it cannot issue the pass without the photograph. Upload it before setting off. Students up to 26 can check the documented CZK 200 discount and required proof.
How daily reservations work for passholders
The reservation instructions set the normal online opening at 08:00 each day, with up to four film reservations for that day. The first festival day is an exception: reservations for October 23 open on October 22 in the afternoon.
The system may start a waiting queue at 07:50 or later when busy. Stay on the page without reloading, and watch the session timer. After booking, check the reservation in your account rather than assuming a click succeeded.
Collect your physical accreditation even if you have reserved online: staff check it at the screening. Reservations expire five minutes before the start, seats are unassigned and reservations cannot be transferred. Cancel a booking you cannot use at least 60 minutes before the screening.
Plan around the actual running time, any discussion and the walk to the next venue. Back-to-back slots in different cinemas can leave no time for a meal or a delayed finish. Two films with a proper break are a reasonable first visit; add more only when the route works.
Catch-Up screenings use a different ticket
The latest ticket notice lists CZK 250 for one Catch-Up ticket or CZK 450 for three. These are for screenings marked Catch-Up, not normal reserved programmes. They do not reserve a seat, and admission remains subject to capacity. A normal ticket with a reservation is not valid for Catch-Up.
For passholders, the festival FAQ also describes waiting for an available place at an ordinary screening without a reservation. Treat that as a fallback, not the basis for a tightly timed day trip. Check the live programme and ask the desk which queue or ticket applies.
Will you understand the films without Czech?
Check the language and subtitles fields on each film's page. An English website or English title does not establish that a screening is understandable in English. Check discussion language separately, too.
One starting point is Return to a Strange Land, a 72-minute film about choreographer Jiri Kylian and dancer Sabine Kupferberg. Its current page lists English and Czech subtitles, with screenings on October 23 at 20:00 in DKO I, October 24 at 19:30 in DKO II and October 30 at 10:30 in DKO II. Those are programme listings, not a promise of remaining tickets.
If your group has different interests, each person can shortlist one film and compare language, timing and venue before booking. Do not buy four consecutive screenings merely because reservations are available.
Where to collect your pass and find the cinemas
The current venue directory separates the main visitor facilities:
| Place | Address | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Horacke Theatre Cafe | Komenskeho 24 | Accreditation collection |
| Reservation and Information desk | Masaryk Square | Ticket and reservation help |
| DKO I and II | Tolsteho 2 | Film screenings |
| Dukla, Reform and Edison | Jana Masaryka 20 | Film screenings |
| DIOD | Tyrsova 12 | Screenings and events |
Pass collection at the theatre cafe runs 09:00-21:00 from October 23 to 31, then 09:00-15:00 on November 1. The square's desk starts earlier: 08:00-20:00 from October 23 to 31, then 08:00-15:00 on November 1.
Save the exact venue from your booking, not just the festival name. The programme also uses Maj Cinema in Trest, outside Jihlava; that is not a short city-centre transfer. A film you can book is not automatically a film you can reach between two other screenings.
Getting to Jihlava and deciding whether to stay overnight
Use IDOS's English journey planner to compare rail and coach options for your actual date. Search both directions, check the precise departure stop and leave time between the last film and the return service. Do not assume a coach arriving from Prague and one returning there use identical stops.
We have not verified a festival-wide last-coach time. Check the operator's dated booking before choosing an evening screening. Staying overnight can be more practical than abandoning a discussion or depending on a connection with no margin.
The organizer says a physical festival accreditation permits free Jihlava public transport during the festival. That does not establish free travel from Prague, nor the same entitlement for a single-film ticket. Keep the pass with you and check a separate fare if you do not have one.
For festival accommodation, the published online deadline was October 20. From October 23, accommodation reservations and payment move to the accreditation centre. The OZS dormitory is listed as fully booked for October 27-November 1. Gym accommodation is listed at CZK 200 per person per night, but a listing does not confirm a remaining place. Bring your own sleeping bag and mat if using that option; loan mats are not guaranteed.
Confirm somewhere to sleep before treating a late screening as part of a relaxed overnight trip. Do not rely on the accommodation form's continued presence as proof that its deadline or availability has changed.
Family visits and access requirements
The Ji.hlava for Kids page says its programme is in Czech only. Ask about the specific activity's language and age suitability before arranging a family visit. An adult documentary screening is not a substitute for children's programming simply because children can attend with a parent.
The accessibility guide describes free accreditation for visitors aged 65 and over, eligible Czech disability-card holders and a qualifying companion. Check eligibility and required documents with the festival rather than assuming every foreign disability document is accepted.
Venue access varies. The directory distinguishes accessible locations, access subject to specific conditions and locations that are not wheelchair accessible. Ask about your cinema, entrance, toilets and transfer route before booking. For a wider trip, use our Czech Republic with kids guide for country-level family planning.
Prepare your tickets, maps and mobile data
Keep the Visitor Page bookmarked, save PDFs where you can find them offline and carry a power bank. Write down your accommodation and return stop as well. The festival FAQ lists visitor Wi-Fi, which may be sufficient when you are at its facilities; it does not replace your plan for checking travel updates between venues.
If you need a separate allowance, the OpenSim Czechia plans listed 1GB for 7 days at US$1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at US$3.00 on October 22. Both were eligible for top-up. They give visitors a mobile-data option for reservations, journey checks and messaging without having to return to a festival Wi-Fi location. Recheck the selected plan before buying; OpenSim does not guarantee a screening reservation or indoor signal.
Your existing roaming allowance may already cover the trip. Check phone compatibility, installation timing and the travel data calculator if you need help choosing an allowance for the rest of your stay.
