The curved riverside facade of Lisbon's MAAT museum in May 2017

Lisbon Art Weekend runs from November 5 to 8, 2026, across galleries, museums and independent art spaces. Its programme events are free, but some require a reservation and museum admission can be limited to a particular time, exhibition or group. Pick one area and a few priorities before filling your day.

The organizer confirms the eighth edition's dates, while Lisbon's tourism authority describes the citywide mix of exhibitions, performances and conversations. There is no single festival gate where one ticket unlocks everything.

The photograph shows MAAT in May 2017, not an Art Weekend event or a current exhibition. MAAT is one of the participating institutions; the workshop discussed below is listed at MAAT Central. The photograph does not show its workshop room.

Which museum visits are free, and when?

The official programme gives specific conditions. These are useful examples, not a blanket free-entry policy for Lisbon's museums:

MuseumListed free-admission windowImportant distinction
CAM, Centro de Arte Moderna GulbenkianNovember 7, 18:00-21:00, for under-30sThe curator-led visit requires ticket collection from the box office, starting two hours before
CAMNovember 8, 14:00-18:00, for everyoneCheck family workshops separately rather than assuming admission reserves a place
MAC/CCBNovember 8, 10:00-14:00The English tour at 12:00-13:00 requires RSVP

Save the condition with the time. Turning up at a participating museum on another day does not establish free admission. Equally, registering for a tour is different from deciding to browse the exhibitions on your own.

For a tight budget, build the day around an entry window you qualify for, then allow for transport and food. You do not need to buy a city sightseeing pass solely to attend free programme events; compare any pass against the rest of your trip instead.

MACAM's opening needs an individual RSVP

The official MACAM registration form lists an opening on November 5 from 18:00 to 20:00, meeting at the main entrance or reception, Rua da Junqueira 66. Temporary exhibitions are free during that opening event.

Each RSVP covers one person. Register separately for each attendee, and keep the response email available. The form was open when checked on October 22; that is not a promise that a place will remain available when you book.

This is a sensible choice if you want one planned evening rather than crossing the city for several openings. Do not read the offer as free access to every part of the museum throughout the four days. Check the confirmation for the activity you reserved.

English tours: Estrela is listed, Marvila registration is closed

The Estrela tour registration lists November 8, 15:00-17:00, in English. Meet at Consonni Radziszewski, Rua dos Navegantes 53A, five minutes early. Its planned route includes Jahn und Jahn/Encounter, 3+1 Arte Contemporânea and MONITOR Lisbon.

Again, it is one registration per person. Check the form and your confirmation before treating the tour as booked. If a guided explanation matters more to you than seeing a particular museum, reserve that first and leave the surrounding hours flexible.

The Marvila tour form was marked fully booked, with registration closed, at the October 22 check. Its presence in the schedule does not mean you can still join. You can choose individual gallery visits instead, using their own listed opening hours.

Programme language labels matter. A Portuguese session with interpretation into Portuguese Sign Language is not an English-language session. For any activity you cannot follow comfortably, ask about alternatives before reserving a scarce place.

A self-guided Marvila afternoon without the booked tour

Two participant pages give you concrete starting points:

  • Galeria Francisco Fino, Rua Capitão Leitão 76, lists Thursday and Friday 12:00-19:00, and Saturday 14:00-19:00. Its page does not list Sunday hours.
  • MAD Marvila, Rua Amorim 3, lists Thursday 16:00-20:00, Friday and Saturday 12:00-19:00, and Sunday 12:00-17:00.

Saturday afternoon gives these two visits overlapping opening hours. Start with whichever exhibition interests you most, then leave time for the walk and a break. Do not turn an open-gallery window into a promise that an artist will be present for your entire visit.

Use the participant directory to add a nearby stop only after checking its address and hours. Two galleries you can spend time in are a better plan than six names you pass while rushing to a reservation elsewhere.

If you want to buy work, ask the gallery about the artist, price, payment and shipping. Free admission does not imply affordable editions, a street market or an obligation to purchase.

Bringing children: check ages, language and the exact session

The festival programme lists Estas Obras MAATam-me on November 8, 11:00-13:00, in Portuguese, for ages 8-12, with advance registration at [email protected]. Accompanying adults have free museum entry during the workshop.

The museum's workshop page describes children developing ideas from artworks through movement and performance. It also contains a conflicting date on the special-session line. Confirm the November booking directly with the museum before arranging your family day around it; do not purchase a normal paid session assuming it is the festival booking.

This is not a recommendation for a six-year-old or a child who cannot comfortably follow Portuguese. For younger children, choose a shorter exhibition visit, ask about stroller access and plan a break before they lose interest. Our Portugal with kids guide covers the wider family trip.

Transport, accessibility and bags

You can plan around one area without renting a car for the event. Use the venue's exact entrance, not just its name, when checking a journey.

For MACAM, the museum's arrival page identifies tram 15E at Centro de Congressos, or Alcântara-Mar station followed by a walk of about 15 minutes. Those are route options, not a guarantee against service changes. Check the journey again on the day.

CARRISway provides live information for CARRIS buses and trams. The Metro's bank-card guidance explains contactless payment at its validators. A Metro payment is not an Art Weekend reservation or a universal ticket for every transport operator.

At MACAM, the accessibility and visitor rules describe lifts and ramps on the exhibition route, except the former chapel area, and adapted toilets. Larger bags and umbrellas should go in reception lockers. Children must be accompanied, and flash photography is prohibited.

Other participating spaces have their own conditions. Ask about steps, lifts, toilets and seating for the specific route you need rather than assuming a citywide accessibility standard. In wet weather, allow extra transfer time and choose fewer stops instead of keeping an overfilled timetable.

Keep your route and reservations available

Save confirmations, addresses and the relevant opening windows before leaving your accommodation. Mark one optional stop you can drop if a visit runs longer than expected. Keep a charged phone for checking departures and contacting your group when plans change.

For visitors needing a separate data allowance, the OpenSim Portugal catalog checked on October 22 listed 1GB for 7 days at US$1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at US$3.00, both eligible for top-up. They offer a choice for a short Lisbon stay or a longer Portugal itinerary, without having to find Wi-Fi for every route check. Recheck the selected package before purchasing.

If your usual plan already includes enough data in Portugal, it may be sufficient. OpenSim does not reserve a tour, reopen a closed registration or replace a museum ticket. Check phone compatibility, installation timing and the travel data calculator before choosing an allowance.

Sources and updates

OpenSim's editorial team checked the linked organizer, registration, venue and transport information on October 22, 2026. Recheck reservations and museum conditions before November 5, especially the closed Marvila booking and the MAAT session date. This guide will be updated for material changes to the programme, entry windows, access or transport arrangements.
