Deoksugung Palace courtyards and autumn trees surrounded by central Seoul buildings in November 2017

Korea Grand Festival runs from October 29 to November 15, 2026. During that period, ordinary admission to Seoul's four main palaces, Jongmyo Shrine and the Joseon royal tombs is free, including for overseas visitors. Regular closing days still apply, and Changdeokgung's Secret Garden tour is excluded. Choose the palace and date first, then check any separate reservation.

The nationwide campaign also brings shopping and visitor promotions. It is not one festival ground where a single ticket unlocks every activity. The useful opportunity for an autumn Seoul trip is a flexible palace visit, perhaps combined with a meal or shopping you already intended to do.

Free admission alone is not a reason to change flights or add hotel nights. Normal palace entry fees are modest, and a discount only helps if the final purchase suits your trip.

What is free during Korea Grand Festival?

The Korea Tourism Organization's festival listing confirms the October 29-November 15 dates. The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center's free-entry notice covers the four palaces, Jongmyo and royal tombs, with the Garden and closing-day exclusions.

Place or activityWhat to plan for
Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Deoksugung and ChanggyeonggungFree ordinary admission during the campaign, on days they are open
Jongmyo ShrineFree admission and a switch to general viewing during the period
Joseon royal tombsFree admission under the campaign; check the actual site's hours and journey
Changdeokgung Secret Garden, also called HuwonA separate paid, capacity-limited visit
Special night programmes, exhibitions or performancesCheck the named programme; free grounds admission does not establish inclusion
Shopping, transport and connectivity promotionsParticipating offers have their own eligibility, dates and redemption terms

You do not need to rent a hanbok merely to obtain ordinary palace admission during this free period. Choose a rental because you want that experience, and allow time for changing and returning it. The Garden still needs its own arrangements.

Which palace is closed on your visit day?

The authority's regular closure schedule separates Monday and Tuesday closures. Within the free-entry period, the relevant dates are:

Closed datesPlaces affected
Monday, November 2 and November 9Changdeokgung, Changgyeonggung, Deoksugung and the royal tombs
Tuesday, November 3 and November 10Gyeongbokgung and Jongmyo

For a Monday visit, Gyeongbokgung is a practical starting choice. On Tuesday, consider one of the Monday-closing palaces instead. Check dated notices as well as the weekly pattern; an event-specific closure can override the ordinary hours.

Avoid booking a Garden tour, restaurant and intercity train around a palace day without checking this table. Free admission cannot recover an afternoon spent outside closed gates.

November hours are shorter at some palaces

The published opening hours give the following November schedule on ordinary open days:

SiteNovember visiting hoursLast ordinary admission
Gyeongbokgung09:00-17:0016:00
Changdeokgung09:00-17:3016:30
Jongmyo general viewing09:00-17:3016:30
Deoksugung09:00-21:0020:00
ChanggyeonggungNormally 09:00-21:00Normally 20:00; see the November exception below

Gyeongbokgung's specific October-November notice confirms that October hours end at 18:00, with last entry at 17:00, before the shorter November schedule begins. An October screenshot can therefore give you the wrong arrival deadline for November.

Changgyeonggung's November 10-15 evening exception

The separate palace notice suspends ordinary night visits from 17:30 to 21:00 on November 10-15 for a special programme requiring advance reservation. Last daytime admission is 16:30, and daytime visiting ends at 17:30.

Do not arrive after dinner with only the general free-entry announcement. If you want an ordinary evening palace visit during those dates, Deoksugung's published evening hours are a better starting point, subject to its own notices and Monday closure.

Secret Garden tickets remain separate

Changdeokgung's grounds and Huwon are different admissions. The authority's fee and reservation guidance lists the Garden at KRW5,000 for adults, with online reservations opening six days before the visit at 10:00 Korean time. It also describes first-come, same-day ticket sales from 09:00.

The authority warns that October and November Garden allocations sell quickly. A free palace visit does not reserve a Garden place, and being able to enter the grounds does not mean a tour remains available.

If the Garden is essential to your plans, confirm its date, language and timed admission before arranging the rest of the day. Make sure the confirmation names the Garden, rather than only the palace building area. Ask the official ticket office how free grounds admission is handled with your chosen Garden booking.

If it is unavailable, spend the time in the palace grounds or choose another outing. Do not buy a replacement tour from an unknown seller simply because an old visitor comment suggests a booking shortcut.

Jongmyo: general viewing, tours and the November 7 rite

The October 21 Jongmyo notice confirms free admission during the campaign and lists English guided tours at 10:00 and 14:00 on its stated non-Saturday operating days. It says foreign-language tours are unavailable on Saturdays.

The same notice lists the autumn ancestral rites on Saturday, November 7, at Yeongnyeongjeon from 10:00 to 12:00 and Jeongjeon from 14:00 to 16:30. It describes free viewing without advance reservation. This is a specific ceremonial day, not the programme for every afternoon of the festival.

Keep a respectful distance and follow staff directions during a ceremony. If you mainly want an English explanation, choose around the published tour schedule rather than assume Saturday's rite includes one.

Also check the gate: the notice lists the North Gate as open on weekends, Wednesdays and public holidays. General viewing does not mean every gate is open every day.

A manageable palace day instead of five rushed stops

Our planning suggestion is one main palace and one optional second visit, with a proper meal break. That leaves room to read the buildings, rest and change plans if the weather turns.

For Gyeongbokgung, the official directions identify Gyeongbokgung Station on line 3, Exit 5, and an alternative approach from Gwanghwamun Station on line 5. Check the route that suits your mobility needs rather than assuming a numbered exit has a lift.

Spend the morning at your chosen main site. After lunch, decide whether another palace still sounds enjoyable. Deoksugung can work as a later stop on its open days; KTO identifies its main gate near City Hall Station. Save the actual entrance, not only a broad palace map pin.

If you hold a Garden reservation, make that the fixed appointment and leave the other stop flexible. For children, a shorter visit with time to sit down can be more useful than adding another gate to the day's checklist. Our South Korea with kids guide covers the wider family itinerary.

How much does free palace entry save?

The normal fee schedule lists adult ordinary admission at KRW3,000 each for Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, and KRW1,000 each for Deoksugung, Changgyeonggung and Jongmyo. Those five individual fees total KRW9,000 for an adult who normally pays at every site.

That is a calculated comparison, not a cash rebate or a reason to visit all five. People already eligible for free entry have a different saving. Transport, meals, rentals, shopping and the Garden remain separate expenses.

Use the free period to make a visit less rigid. Dropping into one palace without buying a multi-site pass may suit your itinerary better than spending more to chase every advertised benefit.

Welcome Week offers: compare the final price

October 27 reporting by The Korea Herald describes a visitor welcome period starting October 30, with airport-rail and connectivity offers alongside shopping promotions. The Visit Korea Committee explains that Welcome Week works through participating organizations and visitor services.

Treat a headline percentage as an invitation to check an offer, not a discount on every purchase. Before paying, confirm the eligible product, booking dates, travel dates, coupon process and final currency total. Check whether a benefit needs a particular payment method or membership.

For mobile data, compare allowance, validity and final price rather than the percentage alone. A discounted local plan may be the better choice for heavy use; a smaller fixed allowance may cost less for a short maps-and-messages visit. Do not assume that two promotions stack or that an advertised airport-rail offer applies to every train service.

Korea travel apps and a short-stay data plan

KTO's current travel-app guide lists NAVER Maps for routes, KorailTalk for rail bookings and k.ride for taxis. Set up the tools you need before leaving your accommodation, and save the palace entrance and hotel address in Korean as well as English.

Keep reservation confirmations and a saved copy of the relevant closure notice available offline. Live maps are useful for an unfamiliar station exit, but a connection does not replace a transport ticket or guarantee that a payment or booking will succeed.

At the October 27 catalog check, OpenSim South Korea plans included 1GB for seven days at USD1.40 and 3GB for 15 days at USD3.40, both eligible for top-up. These fixed allowances give a short-stay visitor a clear alternative to buying a daily-data package. Compare them with the current Welcome Week offer and any Korea roaming already included in your home plan.

Check phone compatibility, installation timing and the travel data calculator before buying. OpenSim supplies mobile data, not priority palace entry, a Garden reservation or access to a closed gate.

Korea Grand Festival sources and review dates

Checked October 27, 2026 against the linked tourism, palace-authority and visitor-service sources. Recheck dated palace notices before visiting, especially after the November hours change and for Changgyeonggung's November 10-15 restriction. This guide will be reviewed for material admission, reservation or offer changes, and when the campaign ends on November 15.
