Almudena Madrid 2026: dates, procession and holiday plans

Madrid celebrates La Almudena on Monday, November 9, 2026, within a programme running November 6-10. The main Mass begins at 11:00 outside the cathedral, with the procession afterwards. If you are visiting for the long weekend, leave that morning flexible: it is a religious celebration, not an ordinary cathedral sightseeing session.
There is a nearby closure worth checking before you book anything. Patrimonio Nacional's current notice says the Royal Collections Gallery is closed through November 8. The school floral offering also moves to November 10 this year. A visit assembled from last year's programme can therefore send you to the right neighbourhood on the wrong day.
Is November 9 a holiday throughout Madrid?
It is a local holiday in Madrid city, not automatically a holiday in every municipality of the wider Madrid region. The city's official 2026 calendar distinguishes November 9, La Almudena, from the November 2 observance of All Saints' Day.
For people whose calendar includes the city holiday and who do not work weekends, that creates a November 7-9 break. It does not establish the opening hours of a particular restaurant, shop or museum. Check the business or attraction itself rather than assuming everything is closed, or everything follows a normal Monday.
If you are staying outside the city, check both your accommodation's location and the place you intend to visit. The same date can be a local holiday at your destination without being one at your base.
Which Almudena events fit your visit?
The 2026 Archdiocese programme confirms these options. Times below are local to Madrid.
| Date | Confirmed event | Location | Planning choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday, November 6, 20:00 | Municipal Symphonic Band concert | Cathedral | An evening music visit |
| Sunday, November 8, 16:00 | Floral offering, parade and traditional groups | Cathedral to Plaza de la Villa | An outdoor afternoon outing |
| Sunday, November 8, 18:00 | Orfeón concert | Cathedral | A separate indoor performance |
| Monday, November 9, 11:00 | Solemn Mass, then procession | Cathedral forecourt and official route | Keep the morning open |
| Monday, November 9, 11:30 | Traditional groups awaiting the image | Plaza de la Villa | This is not a confirmed procession arrival time |
The programme gives the Mass a start time, then places the procession after it. Do not treat 11:00 as the parade departure or book a tight lunch around an assumed finish. Likewise, the 11:30 Plaza de la Villa listing is for performances while groups await the image.
For a shorter visit, choose one event and a meal. Trying to follow every activity, tour the palace and cross town for another performance leaves little room for queues or changes of plan.
Use the 2026 procession map, not a generic walking route
Open the official procession map before choosing a meeting point. It marks a loop using Bailén, Mayor, Santiago and Requena around the cathedral area. Save the image on your phone so you can consult it without reopening a web page in the crowd.
Some general descriptions refer to the Plaza Mayor area, but that is not a substitute for this year's drawn route. Do not choose a viewing position solely because an older itinerary names a famous square. Follow current steward and police directions if access on the day differs from the map.
Agree a fixed place to meet afterwards, away from the moving procession. A street corner that is easy to identify matters more than a live location pin if the group becomes separated. Avoid making your only rendezvous the exact entrance people are trying to use.
The downloadable 2026 programme also includes the route and service information. It is a sizeable PDF, so save it over Wi-Fi before leaving your accommodation.
When can you visit the floral offering?
The official programme PDF gives general-public offering hours of 10:00-20:00 on November 7 and 8, 15:00-20:00 on November 9, and 17:00-20:00 on November 10, entering from Calle Bailén. The school's offering is November 10, 09:00-17:00, with organized reservation slots.
The organizer says this exceptional school-date change relates to the preceding Ibero-American Summit. Do not use a previous year's school timetable to plan a visit. An organized school slot and a general-public offering period are different arrangements.
Madrid's official tourism listing, updated October 26, also describes the traditional corona de la Almudena sold in local bakeries. Buying the seasonal pastry is a simple way to add a food stop. Check ingredients and availability with the bakery, especially for dietary requirements. Do not build lunch around an unverified free distribution copied from an older edition.
A separate free concert at Plaza de los Chisperos
The city lists Por ser la Virgen de la Almudena, performed by Cía. Lírica Ibérica, at noon on November 9 in Plaza de los Chisperos. The advertised duration is 60 minutes, for all audiences, with free admission until capacity is reached.
This is a different location from the cathedral forecourt and Plaza de la Villa. Choose it as an alternative outing rather than promising yourself the entire procession followed by a noon concert elsewhere. The city listing does not promise a reserved seat merely because entry is free.
Can you combine the celebration with the palace or a museum?
The Royal Collections Gallery, the Royal Palace and the cathedral museum are separate visits. Proximity does not give them shared opening rules or admission.
Patrimonio Nacional currently announces the Gallery's closure from October 24 through November 8 for the Ibero-American Summit. That affects the Saturday and Sunday of the Almudena weekend. Check for a fresh notice and actual ticket availability before treating November 9 as a guaranteed reopening visit.
The Royal Palace's official ticket page warns that official events can cause additional closures. Check your precise date and entrance instructions. A Gallery closure does not by itself establish a Palace closure, and a normal seasonal timetable does not override a special notice.
For the cathedral, official tourism guidance says ordinary admission is free, with a requested EUR 1 donation, while the museum has separate admission. It also says sightseeing is not permitted during religious services. Attending the celebration is not the same as having unrestricted tourist access throughout it.
Keep one booked indoor visit on another day if it is a priority. That gives you a useful fallback if the holiday morning takes longer than expected, without forcing you to hurry through the occasion you came to see.
Getting to the cathedral and checking the return journey
The tourism service gives Calle de Bailén 10 as the cathedral address and Ópera, lines 2, 5 and R, as a useful Metro station. Save the address as well as the building name. A station arrival still leaves a walk to the actual entrance or viewing point.
For a bus journey, use current information rather than assuming a normal stop near the procession remains available. EMT's official app directory lists EMT BUS for nearby stops, route planning and waiting times, and NavegaPorMadrid for routes and service incidents. Check again before returning to your hotel.
Use CRTM's ticket and fare guidance to choose a transport ticket. An app showing a route is not itself a valid fare. Do not assume every mobile-ticket function works identically on Android and iPhone.
If a cheaper hotel requires several transfers, compare the actual door-to-door route before booking it. For this outing, a straightforward return journey can be more useful than being slightly closer on a map but depending on a stop whose access may change.
A manageable holiday visit with children or friends
For Sunday, one workable plan is a meal followed by the 16:00 outdoor programme, leaving the later concert optional. For Monday, choose the cathedral celebration or the noon Chisperos concert first, then arrange the rest of the day around that choice.
Allow a toilet and food stop before joining a crowd. With a stroller or mobility aid, ask the cathedral or event team about the current entrance and available space; the published route does not establish a continuous step-free viewing position or guaranteed seating. Keep a way to leave early if waiting becomes uncomfortable.
Check the forecast close to your visit and dress for time spent standing outside. Do not mistake an indoor church address for an indoor Mass: the main November 9 service is on the forecourt. Keep your phone and wallet secure while looking at the procession rather than carrying them loosely in an open pocket.
Save a few translation phrases if you do not speak Spanish, along with your accommodation address. A short, geographically focused plan is easier to adjust than a list that crosses Madrid repeatedly. For the wider holiday, use our Spain with kids guide. Our JAZZMADRID guide and Madrid Science Week guide cover different programmes with their own dates and booking conditions.
Mobile data for maps and meeting up in Madrid
At our October 29 check, OpenSim listed 1 GB for 7 days at USD 1.14 and 3 GB for 15 days at USD 3, both supporting top-up. Check the Spain plans for current prices and checkout totals.
A small fixed allowance can suit a visitor who needs live bus information, translations and family messages away from hotel Wi-Fi, rather than paying for a larger allowance they will not use. Download the programme and map first; use mobile data for what changes during the day.
If Spain roaming is already included in your home plan, that may be the simpler option. OpenSim does not provide festival access, transport admission or priority reception in a crowd. Use the travel data calculator, check phone compatibility, and review installation timing before travel before buying.
Sources and updates
Programme, holiday scope, visitor access, transport tools and OpenSim prices were checked October 29, 2026, against the linked Archdiocese, Madrid tourism and municipal, Patrimonio Nacional, EMT and CRTM sources. This guide will be reviewed for programme changes, Gallery access updates and the end of the November 6-10 celebrations. Recheck the official programme and any booked attraction before setting off.
