Madrid Science Week 2026: free events and booking times

Madrid Science Week runs from November 16-29, 2026, across the Madrid region. Reservations begin on October 19, but individual centres publish different opening times and conditions. If you want a free workshop or research visit during a November trip, check the audience, meeting point and booking rules now rather than waiting until you arrive.
The official event overview confirms the November dates. The programme, called *Semana de la Ciencia y la Innovacion*, includes activities across the region, not one exhibition hall in central Madrid.
For visitors, the main distinction is between a public session and a school activity. A laboratory visit aimed at a booked class is not necessarily available to a travelling family, even when the subject and age range look suitable.
October 19 reservations: check the centre's own time
Two participating institutions illustrate why a single reminder is not enough:
| Institution | Booking opens on October 19, Madrid time | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, MNCN | 09:00 | Public activity limit, age and accompanying adult |
| Centro Nacional de Biotecnologia, CNB | 10:00 | Eligibility, the specific form and session details |
Save the official activity page before booking day. Follow its registration link, read the conditions and keep the confirmation. A page appearing in the programme does not establish that a place is reserved for you.
The regional activity finder lets you narrow the programme by dates, municipality, audience and activity type. Start with the dates when you are actually in Madrid, then filter for the appropriate public audience. That is more useful than choosing a subject first and discovering that the session is for a school group in another municipality.
MNCN family activities: choose one that fits the children
The museum's Science Week programme lists free public activities with online reservations from October 19 at 09:00. Its rules limit each person to one activity, with up to four tickets per person, reduced to two for TeatrIEM. Minors must attend with an adult. SAM lectures use a separate email reservation: [email protected].
These selected public sessions have different age ranges:
| Activity | Published session | Family age guidance |
|---|---|---|
| DIVER, a cooperative science board game | November 21, 12:00-13:00 | Children aged 8 and over |
| Arte Plumario, feather-art visit and workshop | November 21, 22, 28 and 29, 13:00-14:00 | Children aged 8 and over |
| Experimentarea animal, hands-on animal activities | November 22, 28 and 29, 12:00-13:00 | Children aged 5-8 |
Check the selected ticket against the museum's programme before confirming. Do not build a schedule around attending every row: the one-activity rule changes that calculation. For a younger child, an age-matched session is a better choice than a longer workshop chosen because it has space.
CNB research visits: an option for older visitors
The CNB's 2026 programme lists a research-facility visit on November 17, with registration opening on October 19 at 10:00. It is aimed at upper-secondary, vocational and university students and the adult general public, with 30 places.
The visit introduces a research topic and takes participants through three scientific facilities. Confirm the session's start time and meeting instructions before arranging the rest of your day; the summary listing does not supply enough information to time your arrival independently.
Other CNB entries include a November 24 virus workshop labelled for primary-school students aged 8-12. That is not the same as a confirmed drop-in family workshop. Ask the organizer whether an individual child can join before entering a school-registration process.
The distinction matters for adults, too. An activity can be scientifically interesting without fitting the length, language or eligibility of a holiday visit.
ICMM: a walk-in exhibition and theatre at a different venue
The Madrid Institute of Materials Sciences programme offers two quite different public options:
| Activity | Published date and place | Entry guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Ciencia LGTBIQA+, profiles of researchers | November 16-29, 10:00-17:00, ICMM | Free, no reservation; reception limits groups to 20 people at a time |
| Doro, theatre about scientist Dorotea Barnes | November 28, 19:00, CC La Elipa auditorium, Calle Santa Felicidad 39 | Free, with a published capacity of 250; check entry arrangements |
The institute's location information places ICMM at Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz 3 on the Cantoblanco campus, north of the city. The theatre is at La Elipa, not at that campus. Save the venue with the activity name so the organizer's address does not send you to the wrong building.
Before travelling to the exhibition, confirm reception access for your chosen date, particularly a weekend. A no-reservation event can still have a capacity limit and a controlled entrance.
Public events, school groups and language
Read the audience label before opening a form. *Publico general* means general public; *grupos escolares* means school groups. A minimum age does not override a school-only label, and a university building does not make every activity an adult lecture.
The UAM mathematics programme is a useful example. Its October 19 applications include a lottery for school centres, rather than simply allocating all places to the first person who clicks. Do not assume one institution's process applies elsewhere.
The listings are in Spanish. If you need an English-language visit, ask the organizer whether that session can accommodate you before booking. An English version of a museum website or an English exhibition guide does not establish that a live workshop is delivered in English.
A free activity is not a blanket museum admission offer
Check what your confirmation admits you to. A reserved Science Week workshop and an ordinary museum visit are different bookings unless the organizer says otherwise.
MNCN's visitor information separately lists ordinary free-entry periods on Tuesday afternoons and Sunday evenings, with online tickets subject to capacity. Those arrangements do not replace registration for a timed Science Week activity.
If you want time in the permanent galleries as well, check the museum's current admission conditions and opening hours. Do not turn up for an afternoon workshop expecting an unrestricted full-day visit, or buy an extra ticket without first checking what your activity includes.
Getting to the museum and planning access
MNCN is at Calle Jose Gutierrez Abascal 2. Its directions list Gregorio Maranon and Nuevos Ministerios for Metro access, and Nuevos Ministerios for suburban rail. Save the museum's actual entrance and allow time for the walk from the station.
The museum's access guide distinguishes the Biology and Geology buildings. It lists entrance ramps, lifts and adapted toilets, along with tactile resources and an English Easy Read guide. Ask which building and room your activity uses, rather than assuming a general access description covers every workshop arrangement.
For specific needs, contact [email protected] before fixing the visit. Include the activity name, date and assistance required. Access to a permanent exhibition resource does not automatically mean a workshop provides the same sensory or communication support.
Use one booked activity as the day's anchor
For a family weekend, pick the suitable museum activity, allow for food and a break, then decide whether an ordinary gallery visit fits. Leave enough flexibility to finish when the children have had enough rather than buying another timed attraction immediately afterward.
For a research-campus visit, treat the journey as part of the outing. Check both directions and the exact meeting point before adding a central-city museum. A place described simply as Madrid may be outside the area where you have been walking between sights.
For a wider holiday, use the Spain with kids guide for country-level planning. Keep this event booking separate from choices about Toledo, another city or a longer Spain itinerary.
The official Metro de Madrid Android app provides network maps, station information, routes and service status. Use it for the Metro portion of a journey, then check the remaining walk or suburban connection. It is a planning tool, not your science-event reservation.
Keep confirmations and directions available offline
Save your confirmation, organizer contact, venue address and return route before leaving accommodation Wi-Fi. Carry a charged phone and keep the activity's age and entry requirements with the booking, especially when one adult is organizing tickets for the group.
International visitors who need a separate prepaid allowance can compare OpenSim Spain plans. On October 15, the public catalog listed 5GB for 30 days at USD4.76 with top-up support. That can suit a short Madrid visit with maps, booking messages and transport checks, with an eligible plan available to top up.
Check the current package before buying. If your usual plan already includes enough Spain roaming, another allowance may not be necessary. Mobile data helps retrieve a confirmation; it does not secure an unbooked place or change an activity's age and language requirements.
Estimate an allowance with the travel data calculator, check phone compatibility, and read the installation timing guide. Keep the offline backup whichever connection you use.
Dates, sources and updates
Event dates, institution booking rules, selected public sessions, access, transport tools and product facts were checked on October 15, 2026. Recheck the individual activity when bookings open on October 19, then again before travel for any changed venue, session or entry condition. After November 29, this guide needs review before it is used to plan another edition.
