Boston Logan International Airport is operating with reduced runway capacity while Runway 9/27 receives a safety upgrade. Why Runway 9/27 work can delay a flight

The project adds an Engineered Material Arresting System, usually shortened to EMAS, beyond the Runway 27 threshold. The crushable material is designed to slow an aircraft that overruns the paved runway where Boston Harbor limits the available safety area.

The FAA's Boston Runway 27 notice describes a two-year construction project scheduled for completion in November 2026. Massport says the current phase requires Runway 9/27 to be closed with very limited availability for about 75 days.

Logan has other runways. The constraint is that the airport cannot use every runway combination in every wind and visibility condition. When arrivals must be metered, the FAA may hold a flight at its origin so Logan does not receive more aircraft than it can safely handle. That is a ground delay program. A departure from Boston can then slip because its inbound aircraft or crew arrives late, even if the departing runway remains usable.

This is why a single universal estimate such as "every flight will be one hour late" is unreliable. A clear morning can operate differently from a low-cloud afternoon. One airline may have its aircraft and crew in place while another is waiting for an inbound flight.

The airline controls the booking, gate, check-in deadline and rebooking. Search the operating carrier's app or website by flight number. A codeshare sold by one airline may be operated by another, so check the carrier named beside "operated by" on the itinerary.

Keep notifications enabled, but do not rely on a push alert alone. Open the booking before leaving the hotel and again on the way to Logan. Save the boarding pass and booking reference offline.

2. FAA airport-wide status

The FAA status page can show an active ground stop, ground delay program, departure delay or a forecast that one may be needed. Airport-wide information explains the operating constraint. It does not cancel or confirm an individual ticket.

A forecast can disappear, start later or become more restrictive. Record the time of the update rather than repeating a delay number hours after it was published.

3. Massport alerts and construction updates

The runway project and a terminal walkway closure are separate problems. Extra curb or walking time will not cause an FAA ground delay, but it can still make a passenger miss check-in or bag drop.

Should you change to an earlier flight?

For a flexible new booking, an earlier flight gives the airline more same-day recovery options if operations deteriorate. It also reduces the chance that a creeping delay reaches the last departure of the day. That is a planning advantage, not a promise that morning flights will be punctual.

For an existing ticket, compare the cost and conditions before changing anything voluntarily. A confirmed nonstop may still be better than a self-created connection through another busy airport. How much connection time is sensible at BOS?

One ticket, same terminal area

The airline sold the connection and remains responsible for rebooking when its delayed inbound causes a misconnection. A longer connection is still useful because replacement seats can be scarce when several flights are late.

One ticket, international arrival

Allow for immigration, baggage collection when required, customs, bag recheck and security. Global Entry or a short immigration line does not remove the runway risk on the inbound flight.

Separate tickets

A second airline may treat a missed departure as a no-show. A two-hour gap can disappear before the first flight reaches a gate. Move the first flight earlier, travel with cabin baggage when practical, or add an overnight when the second ticket protects an expensive long-haul journey, cruise or fixed event.

Massport's current construction table lists several terminal-level changes. The pedestrian connector between Terminal A and part of Terminal B is closed, some pre-security Terminal B escalators may be unavailable, the Terminal C bus stop has moved, and parts of the Terminal E arrivals sidewalk are closed. Follow airport signs because dates and walking routes can change.

• Silver Line 1 stops at every terminal and connects with the Red Line and Commuter Rail at South Station. Travel from Logan on the Silver Line is free.
• Free Massport shuttles connect every terminal with Airport station on the Blue Line.
• Ferries run from the airport ferry terminal, but service varies by season and destination.

If a delayed arrival puts you near the final service, check the live timetable before boarding the flight to Boston. Save the hotel address and one backup route offline. A rideshare estimate made before takeoff will not reflect the queue or road conditions after landing.

Changing the flight to Providence, Manchester or another airport is not automatically better. Price the new ticket, ground transfer and lost time together. On separate tickets, changing the arrival airport can also affect checked bags and onward protection.

What happens if the flight is cancelled or significantly changed?
