Fewer trains will serve Brussels Airport-Zaventem every day from Saturday, October 3 through Sunday, October 18, 2026. The airport and its railway station remain open, but several direct trains will skip the airport, other services will be split, and departure times will change. Travelers with a flight should rebuild the entire rail journey in the SNCB app and leave on an earlier workable connection.

The short answer: Brussels Airport is not losing all train service. The practical risk is relying on a direct train that will not call at the airport, or missing a flight after an added change. Search for Brussels Airport-Zaventem, include buses in the journey planner, and keep the ticket available for the airport station gates.

The official SNCB works notice was last updated on September 8. SNCB says normal journey times will be longer and directs passengers to use its live planner. Check again on the day of travel because a saved itinerary will not reflect a later operational change.

This does not mean every traveler from Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent or Bruges must use a bus. Direct airport trains continue from several cities, but at a lower frequency. Use the live result for the chosen departure time instead of applying one route to the whole day.
Weekend changes need a separate search
The weekend timetable is not the weekday timetable with fewer commuters. SNCB lists additional changes for October 3 and 4, October 10 and 11, and October 17 and 18.
The Knokke to Liege intercity and Brussels to Rotterdam EuroCity do not stop at the airport on those weekends. The Antwerp to Leuven and Hasselt service runs only between Antwerp-Central and Brussels Airport-Zaventem, leaving no direct airport link from the Leuven to Hasselt section. The S19 is also split, so travelers from stations between Landen and Leuven may need Brussels-North or the Zaventem bus connection.
International passengers should also check SNCB International disruption notices. EuroCity and Eurocity Direct changes on the Belgian and Dutch networks can affect an earlier or later leg even when a domestic airport train still runs.
Brussels Airport-Zaventem and Zaventem are different stations
This naming catches visitors during normal service and matters more during the works.
- Brussels Airport-Zaventem is the railway station beneath the airport terminal.
- Zaventem is the town station outside the airport.
A train diverted to Zaventem has not delivered you to the terminal. SNCB allows passengers with a valid train ticket to continue on De Lijn bus R26 or 82 between Zaventem-Station and Zaventem Brussels Airport.
SNCB estimates six minutes on the bus itself. It lists 6 to 10 buses an hour on weekdays, three an hour on Saturdays and two an hour on Sundays. Add walking, locating the stop, waiting, boarding and terminal access. A six-minute ride can therefore add much more than six minutes to the flight journey.
In the SNCB journey planner, open the personalization options and include bus as a transport mode. Otherwise the useful Zaventem transfer may not appear.
How early should you leave for a flight?
Start with the airline's airport-arrival requirement, then work backward from the terminal rather than the railway platform.
- Find an itinerary that arrives before the airline's required check-in or bag-drop time.
- Add time to walk from the station or bus stop to the correct departure area.
- If the route has a train-to-train or train-to-bus change, keep one earlier connection in reserve.
- Add more time for children, checked luggage or mobility assistance.

There is no honest universal buffer for every origin and flight. A direct train from central Brussels is a different journey from a Sunday trip that starts in Hasselt and uses two transfers. The safe choice is the earlier itinerary that still works if one connection is missed.
For an arriving passenger, avoid promising a pickup time based on the scheduled landing. Passport control, baggage delivery, the airport station gate and the reduced rail timetable all sit between touchdown and the city.
Tickets, the airport supplement and station gates
The October works do not remove the normal ticket rules. The SNCB airport ticket guide says the Brussels Airport Supplement is included automatically in most tickets to or from Brussels Airport-Zaventem. Other ticket types may require the supplement separately.
Keep the QR code or eligible travel card accessible. Gates control entry and exit at the airport station. A screenshot may fail if the code is cropped, dim or stored on a phone with no battery.
The R26 and 82 substitution is different: SNCB explicitly says travelers may use those buses between Zaventem station and the airport with their valid train ticket during the works. That does not turn the same ticket into unlimited travel on unrelated De Lijn routes.
If the ticket shows only Zaventem, it is not a ticket to the station under the terminal. Confirm the destination before payment, especially when a travel app offers both names.
What if you have luggage, children or need assistance?
The bus bridge adds a boarding step that a normal direct train avoids. Keep luggage to a load one adult can move without blocking the bus aisle, and leave extra time if a stroller must be folded or managed with cases. Do not assume the next bus will have the same available space as the first.
Children's ticket conditions depend on the accompanying adult, route and product. Build the trip in SNCB's official sales channel rather than relying on an old social-media price. Every traveler who needs a scannable ticket or supplement at the airport gate should have it ready.
Passengers who need step-free routing or boarding assistance should use SNCB's assistance information and contact the operator for the exact journey. The fact that a bus is listed as an alternative does not establish that every vehicle, stop and transfer path suits a particular mobility device.
Should you switch to a taxi or airport bus?
Not automatically. A remaining direct train may still be the simplest route, while the Zaventem bus bridge is included with a valid rail ticket. Compare complete journeys, not only the moving time.
A road transfer can be useful for a very early departure, a large group or a route with several rail changes. It can also encounter traffic. Ask a taxi or private-transfer provider for the pickup point and total quoted price before accepting the ride.
From central Brussels, STIB airport bus 12 is another public-transport option, but it has its own airport fare and stop pattern. Check the current operator result for the travel direction. Do not assume a rail ticket, Brussels Card or ordinary city ticket covers it.
