Blue and purple lights illuminate Kew's Palm House and pond during Christmas at Kew in December 2016

Christmas at Kew runs on selected evenings from November 13, 2026, to January 3, 2027. You need a separate evening-trail ticket, not ordinary daytime garden admission. Choose your date, entry time and gate together, then plan the journey to that gate before paying.

There is a new choice this year: December 3 and 9 are adult-only evenings for visitors aged 18 and over. Families should choose another night. Adults who want that format can book it through the ticket page linked by Kew.

Kew's October 9 announcement said December tickets were selling fast, with better availability in November. That is a dated organizer update, not a guarantee of today's availability. Check the booking calendar for your group before arranging dinner or transport around a slot.

What is new on the 2026 light trail?

Kew announces a 3km route with 30 installations. New works include Squidsoup's Infinite Choir, Studio Vertigo's Drift, TILT's illuminated blooms and ITHACA's animated willow. The Palm House Pond display also returns with new fountains.

This is an evening built around walking through light and sound installations, rather than seeing the gardens as you would during the day. Go if that is the experience you want. A visitor mainly interested in plants and glasshouses should consider a separate daytime visit instead of expecting the trail to replace it.

Leave room to stop at displays that interest you. Trying to take a photograph at every installation can turn the walk into a task list. With children or a mixed-age group, agree on a comfortable pace and reassess it as you go.

Choose your date before comparing prices

The 2026 event page gives the season's usual hours as 4:20pm to 10pm, with a 9pm close on December 24. "Selected evenings" matters: this is not an every-night event throughout the date range.

Kew's planning information excludes November 16, 23 and 28, and December 25. The listed off-peak dates are November 17-19, 24-26 and 30, plus December 1-2. Confirm that the specific date and time you want is offered in the live calendar.

Your group or priorityA booking choiceCheck before paying

Hidden-disability access needsA designated Quiet Access sessionThe session time and booking conditions

An adult-only evening is an age restriction, not a promise of an empty trail. A quiet session serves a different access need; do not book it simply as a shortcut to fewer people.

Christmas at Kew ticket prices, including booking fees

These published 2026 totals were checked on October 13. They are not a live inventory check.

Standard ticketOff-peakPeak
Adult, non-memberGBP29.50GBP37
Child aged 4-15GBP20GBP24
Family: two adults and two childrenGBP89GBP108
Child under fourFree ticketFree ticket

Kew's published 2026 totals include booking fees. Its planning page requires a valid ticket for everyone, including under-fours. A free child ticket still needs to be included in the booking.

For two adults and two children in the paid child band, separate tickets total GBP99 off-peak or GBP122 peak. The listed family ticket is therefore GBP10 or GBP14 less, respectively. That comparison applies to that exact party, not every family arrangement.

The organizer-linked booking page uses the 4-15 child band. If a child is 16 or 17, check the applicable ticket rather than assuming an older press-release age label entitles them to the child price.

Budget separately for food, drinks, transport, parking and rides. The trail ticket is not an all-inclusive evening. Decide what you are happy to spend before arriving, especially if every family member wants a different extra.

Which entry gate should you book?

Kew Gardens is not one interchangeable entrance. Check the gate offered with your ticket, then put that gate's postcode into your journey planner.

GateUsual last entryUseful arrival choice
Victoria Gate8pmKew Gardens station or a suitable bus route
Elizabeth Gate7:20pmKew Bridge National Rail arrival
Brentford Gate7pmThe event's reserved Ferry Lane parking option

Last-entry times come from Kew's event page. They do not let a standard timed-ticket holder arrive whenever they like before that cutoff. Follow your booked session.

On Christmas Eve, Victoria's last entry is 7pm and Elizabeth's is 6:20pm. Kew's pages disagree about Brentford's Christmas Eve cutoff, showing 6pm and 6:20pm. Confirm your booked slot with the organizer if using that gate on December 24. Do not build a connection around the later of two conflicting times.

Flexible entry is not unlimited entry. Fever describes Anytime tickets as valid on the selected date, and Any Day, Anytime as a different product; its flexible products specify Victoria Gate. Read the exact conditions for the ticket you choose rather than assuming it works at any entrance.

If you cannot find a workable slot, reconsider the date before paying a stranger for a screenshot or resale listing. An old forum account of finding spare tickets does not establish an authorized 2026 resale route.

Can you visit the gardens and the trail on the same day?

Yes, if you book the appropriate daytime admission as well as the evening event. Neither ordinary daytime admission nor the trail ticket includes the other visit automatically. The Fever booking page offers a combined Garden Entry + Christmas at Kew option.

Kew requires daytime visitors during this period to leave by 3:15pm, with last daytime entry at 2:30pm, then re-enter at the booked evening gate and time. You cannot simply stay inside between the two visits.

That gap deserves a plan. If arriving in the morning, leave time to eat, warm up and reach the evening entrance. If arriving late in the afternoon, consider whether there is enough daytime visit left to justify paying for it.

A day in Richmond followed by Kew can work, but do not combine a long park walk, a full garden visit and the whole trail just because they look close on a map. Count the walking and outdoor time together, particularly for older relatives or children.

For broader trip planning, our United Kingdom with kids guide covers a different decision: choosing places and pacing a family holiday, rather than this event's bookings.

Public transport: plan to the gate, not just "Kew"

Kew's current arrival page places Kew Gardens station 500m from Victoria Gate, served by the District line's Richmond branch and the Mildmay line. Kew Bridge station is 800m from Elizabeth Gate, with South Western Railway services from Waterloo.

The stations are different, as are the walks from them. Check both directions of your journey on the visit date. Do not assume a route that works on a weekday also works during weekend engineering works or the Christmas holidays.

For step-free travel, Kew warns that Kew Bridge has no level access and Kew Gardens station's westbound platform is not level-accessible. Richmond has lift and level access, with the 65 bus offering another approach. Check the full journey for your needs rather than treating the nearest station as automatically the easiest.

Use TfL's accessible journey tools, including TfL Go and Journey Planner, to consider stairs, escalators, walking distance and changes. Recheck service information before departure. A saved route is helpful, but it does not update itself when a line or lift is unavailable.

Plan the return journey before entering the trail. Allow time to walk back to your stop and leave some margin if you need a connection. A closing time is not the time you will necessarily reach a station.

Parking is an advance booking, not a fallback on arrival

The event requires pre-booked parking. The official planning page lists Ferry Lane at GBP15 and National Archives parking at GBP13.50. Match parking to your entry ticket: National Archives is offered with Victoria or Elizabeth entry; Ferry Lane is associated with Brentford.

Fever's National Archives information specifies access from 40 minutes before the trail slot and cars out by 10:45pm. Check the conditions attached to your booking, including the walk to the gate. Evening parking does not cover an earlier daytime visit automatically.

Do not substitute Kew's ordinary daytime parking rules for Christmas at Kew arrangements. If arriving by car is essential, confirm parking before buying an admission slot that depends on it.

Walking, children and access needs

Kew warns of varying gradients, difficult terrain and wet-weather challenges. Its current guide allows pushchairs and lists toilets and accessible facilities. Plan for the route your party can manage, not an average pace from a review.

For a first visit, choose an entry time that leaves breathing room before closing. Stop for a rest before someone is exhausted. If continuing is difficult, speak to a steward about an exit route instead of trying to improvise a shortcut through the gardens.

The event page lists Quiet Access dates on November 21 and December 1, 16 and 26. Check the current availability and session details; those dates do not imply unlimited access-ticket stock.

Guests needing an essential companion should follow Fever's eligibility process, which requires a main booking and validation of the relevant access ID or accreditation. Arrange this before the visit, not in the entry queue.

Wear footwear and layers suitable for an evening outdoors. Charge phones before leaving and carry only what your group needs. A long day of sightseeing beforehand can matter more to children's stamina than the trail itself.

Read the weather, cancellation and exchange conditions before buying. Kew does not offer ordinary date or gate exchanges after purchase; poor weather is not an automatic refund entitlement. Follow official messages if an evening is cancelled.

Keep tickets and travel information available

Save the actual ticket, date, session and gate details on your phone, with a copy available if a browser will not load. Take a screenshot of the gate postcode and keep the booking reference handy. Charge your phone again after a day of photographs if you are relying on it for the evening.

An offline ticket copy and map can reduce the need to find a connection at an entrance. Mobile data is still useful for current travel information, contacting your group and checking a changed return route.

For international visitors whose home plan does not include suitable UK data, OpenSim United Kingdom plans offer a separate allowance for those tasks. On October 13, the public catalog listed United Kingdom 5GB for 30 days at USD4.76, with top-up support for that plan. Check the current offer and your phone before purchase.

That can suit a London trip extending beyond one evening at Kew, with a defined allowance rather than a search for Wi-Fi at each stop. A home plan that already includes enough UK data may be the better choice. An eSIM does not fix a sold-out event, change your ticket terms or guarantee reception on the trail.

Check our phone compatibility guide, installation timing guide and travel data calculator for those separate decisions.

Sources and updates

Dates, prices and booking conditions were checked against Kew's event and planning pages, its October 9 announcement and the ticket provider it links on October 13, 2026. Journey guidance uses Kew's arrival information and TfL's accessibility tools. Live ticket stock, transport disruptions and weather can change.

We will update this guide when booking or access conditions change, when Kew publishes its 2026 visual guide, and after the January 3 closing date. A previous edition's route or photograph is not a promise of this year's displays.
