Cologne Museums Night 2026: tickets and a practical route

Cologne Museums Night returns on Saturday, November 7, 2026, with the main evening running from 18:00 to 01:00. Buy the appropriate online pass, choose a few venues and check ART COLOGNE separately: its included visit window is earlier than most of the night. Free child admission does not include the child's public transport.
The Kölner Museumsnacht returns after a year off, with a new organizer and concept. An October 16 announcement from event partner Gaffel highlights ART COLOGNE's first participation and TEMPO___K among the venues. This is an evening for making choices, not completing every museum on a list.
This Cologne Museums Night 2026 visitor guide explains the ticket boundaries, suggests geographically sensible combinations and identifies what to recheck before leaving for the city.
Use the organizer's evening hours, not a generic ticket time
The organizer's current website and City of Cologne listing give 18:00 on November 7 to 01:00 on November 8. The ticket listing also displays a generic 19:00 event time. Plan around the organizer's main schedule and your chosen venue's programme rather than assuming that every activity starts at the ticket header time.
Do not use an old edition's leaflet as the programme. A familiar museum may have a different address, another venue may have joined, and a performance can start well before your planned arrival.
Before booking travel, choose the activity that matters most. Then fit the rest of the night around its actual start, admission conditions and location. Keeping the last stop optional makes the evening easier when a queue or a longer-than-expected visit changes the plan.
Buy the right museum pass and check the fees
The organizer's ticket page lists these categories, checked on October 16:
| Category | Published admission price | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Museumspass | EUR 20 plus fees | Check the final payable total before ordering |
| Reduced Museumspass | EUR 10 plus fees | Bring the required evidence of eligibility |
| Child or qualifying companion ticket | EUR 0 | Obtain the correct free ticket; child transport is not included |
Reduced categories include students, apprentices and specified youth and concession groups. A companion accompanying a visitor with the relevant disability ID and B marker needs the free ticket and appropriate evidence.
Check the exact child age rule when ordering, especially for a 14-year-old: the published free-child and reduced-youth descriptions overlap at that age. Ask the organizer instead of assuming which category the checkout will accept.
The event FAQ says tickets are online only. One pass covers participating locations rather than requiring a separate museum ticket at each stop. Staff scan it on entry and exit, so keep it available when leaving as well as arriving.
Buying the pass does not remove the need to check a particular performance, tour or unusual space for its own entry instructions. Do not treat access to the event as a promise of immediate admission to everything inside it.
Visit ART COLOGNE before the main museum route
The current ticket listing advertises included ART COLOGNE access from 16:00 to 19:00 on November 7. That is not an all-day fair ticket and not a late-night opening until 01:00. Confirm this window on the selected ticket before travel.
The event's ART COLOGNE entry specifies Koelnmesse, South Entrance. If the fair is your priority, make it the first part of the afternoon and accept that you will reach the central museums later. There is no need to rush out at 18:00 merely because the rest of Museums Night has begun.
ART COLOGNE's own visitor ticket guidance describes bag and personal checks, restrictions on bringing food and dogs, and separately priced guided tours. Read those conditions before arriving with dinner in a backpack or assuming a tour is part of the museum-night pass.
Leave time for the crossing to your next stop. An itinerary that uses the fair until its window ends cannot also place you at a central museum performance at the same moment.
Choose one museum cluster instead of crossing Cologne repeatedly
These are route choices, not a timed programme or a guarantee that you can enter each venue without waiting:
| Area | Possible combination | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Cathedral and central streets | Museum Ludwig, then MAKK or Kölnisches Stadtmuseum | Visitors who want art and city history without adding an outlying venue |
| Cäcilienstraße and Neumarkt | Römisch-Germanisches Museum, Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum or Museum Schnütgen | Visitors choosing archaeology, cultures or medieval art |
| Rhine waterfront | Schokoladenmuseum and Deutsches Sport & Olympia Museum | A waterfront evening with two nearby museum choices |
| Across the Rhine | ART COLOGNE, then a deliberate choice of TEMPO___K or KunstWerk | Visitors prepared to spend more time on transfers |
Check the current location list and decide which two or three places you actually want to see. Even nearby venues need time for entry, coats, toilets and finding the right room.
Museum Ludwig is the modern and contemporary art choice at Heinrich-Böll-Platz, including Pop Art and photography. Pick a part of the collection or an advertised event rather than trying to cover the whole museum between other stops.
For archaeology, the Römisch-Germanisches Museum entry points to its interim home in the Belgisches Haus, Cäcilienstraße 46. Do not navigate to its usual cathedral-side building. This location makes more sense in a Neumarkt-area route.
Nearby, the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum is at Cäcilienstraße 29-33. Choose it for cultural collections and perspectives on different societies, not because the shared address means you can finish it and Museum Schnütgen in one short visit.
TEMPO___K is a closing evening, not another permanent stop
The TEMPO___K programme entry describes a final evening before the temporary industrial-hall museum is dismantled as Deutzer Hafen is redeveloped. Alongside contemporary wall paintings, it lists a special exhibition with artists from Quartier am Hafen, performances, video work and installations.
Its address is Poller Kirchweg 13. If wall painting and the closing programme are your main interests, give it a substantial part of the evening instead of adding it after an already full central route. Activities offered there over summer do not prove that the same children's facilities or timetable will operate on November 7.
Another unusual option is the RheinEnergie district-heating tunnel, listed at Kennedy-Ufer. The organizer describes a tunnel roughly 500 metres long and 25 metres beneath the Rhine. Confirm access, booking and mobility conditions before making it essential to your route. Its listing is not evidence of a step-free crossing or a convenient public shortcut between museums.
Use the shuttle plan, but keep your return journey separate
The published KVB shuttle overview connects locations including Neumarkt, Rheinauhafen, TEMPO___K, ART COLOGNE and KunstWerk. It does not yet give a complete departure timetable or a guaranteed last bus for every stop. Recheck the detailed plan before November 7.
The museum pass advertises VRS arrival and departure travel. Read the transport conditions supplied with your ticket for its valid area, times and required documents. Do not assume it covers an intercity train, the whole weekend or a companion's journey simply because your own admission is valid. The free child category expressly excludes VRS travel, so arrange each child's journey separately.
Use the KVB app for current connections, real-time information and ticket options when you need a separate fare. Its journey planner can favor fewer changes or shorter walks. Check whether your event ticket already covers the journey before buying another product.
Save a return connection to the actual hotel or onward station, not just to the city centre. The event finishing at 01:00 does not establish the departure time of your train. Leave a buffer, particularly if the final venue is across the Rhine from your accommodation.
Families and visitors with access needs should plan by venue
A free child ticket is an admission category, not a recommendation that every location suits every age. Choose a shorter route and an early finish if that fits your children. Keep time for a meal instead of relying on snacks between queues.
The NS-Dokumentationszentrum covers National Socialism in Cologne and the lives of people subjected to persecution. Treat it as a place for historical reflection, not an interchangeable entertainment stop in a small child's evening.
Ask the chosen venue about step-free entrances, lifts, accessible toilets, seating, sensory conditions and assistance. Ask separately about shuttles and unusual spaces. Accessibility at one museum does not establish it across the whole route.
Much of the visit is indoors, but the transfers are not. Check the forecast, carry a rain layer and choose shoes for walking and standing. Food is available at various participating places, according to the organizer, but that does not guarantee a table, a particular diet or a late kitchen at your last stop.
Keep tickets, route changes and messages available
Download tickets, venue addresses and a map before leaving Wi-Fi. Carry a charged phone and a backup power source if you depend on digital admission. Keep the booking email available in case you need to retrieve the ticket again.
For visitors whose home plan does not include enough German roaming, OpenSim Germany plans offer a defined allowance for checking the next connection, opening venue information and messaging the group between stops. On October 16, the public catalog listed 5 GB for 30 days at USD 4.76, with top-up available for that plan. Recheck the selected package and price before buying.
If your existing plan already covers Germany adequately, you may not need another data package. Mobile data also cannot guarantee reception in a crowded building or replace a saved ticket when the phone battery runs out.
Use the travel data calculator, check phone compatibility and review installation timing. For a longer family holiday, continue with our Germany with kids guide.
