Delta Wine Takes Flight: free wine case rules
Delta has published a new SkyMiles baggage benefit for travelers leaving five California airports with wine. Under Wine Takes Flight, an eligible member can check one qualifying case of wine without the usual bag fee on an eligible Delta itinerary to a destination in the United States.
The useful part is narrow. The trip must start at Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento or Sonoma County. The traveler must be at least 21, the itinerary must be marketed and operated by Delta or Delta Connection, and the case has its own bottle, weight, size and packing limits.

The short answer: add your active SkyMiles number to the reservation, use a sturdy leak-resistant wine shipper, keep the case within 12 unopened 750 ml bottles, 50 pounds and 62 linear inches, and take it to the ticket counter unsealed in case an agent needs to inspect it. Check the operating carrier before relying on the fee waiver.
Delta's program page was checked on October 5, 2026. It labels the benefit as currently available. Several contemporaneous reports give October 6 as the start date, so a traveler checking a case during the rollout should confirm that the waiver appears at the airport before treating it as active.
Who and what qualifies
| Requirement | Delta's current rule | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Member | Active SkyMiles member aged 21 or older | Put the member number on the reservation before check-in |
| Ticket | Paid ticket or Award Travel | The ticket type does not remove the other restrictions |
| Origin | OAK, SFO, SJC, SMF or STS | The benefit works on departures, not arrivals into these airports |
| Destination | A destination within the United States | International destinations do not qualify |
| Airline | Delta or Delta Connection marketed and operated flights | A Delta flight number on another airline is not enough |
| Case | One protective case with no more than 12 unopened 750 ml bottles | Original labels must remain on the bottles |
| Size and weight | No more than 50 lb and 62 total linear inches | Overweight and oversize charges still apply |
The five airport codes are Oakland San Francisco Bay (OAK), San Francisco International (SFO), Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International (SJC), Sacramento International (SMF) and Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County (STS).
The waiver applies to one qualifying wine case. It does not remove charges for another checked bag, an overweight case or an oversize container. Baggage embargoes and operational restrictions can also override normal acceptance.
The direction and operating carrier matter
Wine Takes Flight is an outbound California benefit. A passenger flying into San Francisco and checking wine on the return from another state does not qualify unless that return actually begins at one of the five listed California airports.
A connection can qualify when the eligible trip begins at a participating airport and continues to a US destination on Delta or Delta Connection marketed and operated flights. Check every segment. Codeshare travel operated by a partner falls outside Delta's published terms, even if the booking displays a Delta flight number.
For an itinerary that changes after a cancellation, look at the replacement operating carrier before checking the case. A rebooking onto a partner can change eligibility. Ask the ticket-counter agent to confirm the waiver before the case enters the baggage system.
How to pack the case for inspection
Delta describes a case as one box or wine travel container. It must be durable, leak-resistant and protective enough for baggage handling. Bottles must be unopened and carry their original labels.
Do not seal the case permanently before reaching the ticket counter. Delta may inspect it, and its terms say the airline can refuse inadequate packaging. A purpose-built molded insert or divided wine shipper is a better fit than loose bottles wrapped inside ordinary luggage.
Weigh the finished case, not an empty box. Twelve glass 750 ml bottles plus protective material can approach the 50-pound limit quickly. Measure length, width and height and add them together for the 62-inch limit.
The TSA alcohol guidance says beverages at 24% alcohol or less are not subject to its quantity limit in checked baggage. Airline acceptance, state law, packaging and screening still apply. The wine-case benefit does not authorize other alcohol or remove a security officer's final decision.
Damage risk remains with the traveler
The waived fee is not damage insurance. Delta's Wine Takes Flight terms state that wine travels at the customer's risk. Its fragile baggage guidance also makes protective packaging important and explains when a limited liability release may be required.
Photograph the bottles, labels and packed case before leaving the winery if the contents are valuable. Keep purchase receipts and ask the winery whether it offers a tested shipper. For rare or irreplaceable bottles, compare professional shipping and insurance rather than assuming a free checked case is the lowest-risk choice.
Mobile data helps with the ground journey
Ground mobile data can help on a California wine trip when you need winery directions, reservation messages, rideshare pickup, airline check-in, bag tracking or a last-minute shipping quote. It cannot make an ineligible case acceptable, change the operating carrier or provide inflight Wi-Fi.
For a trip that stays in the country, compare the live United States OpenSim plans. Choose against the trip length and expected map, booking and messaging use. Package allowances, speeds and top-up eligibility vary, so use the live plan card rather than assuming every option can be reloaded.
Use the travel data calculator to estimate the allowance, check phone compatibility, and read when to install an eSIM before travel while reliable Wi-Fi is available.
OpenSim plans provide mobile data on supported ground networks. They do not include a US phone number, ordinary carrier SMS or voice service unless the selected package explicitly says so. Keep Delta's own contact method and the winery's shipping details available separately.
Delta Wine Takes Flight questions
Do I need Delta Medallion status?
No. Delta requires an active SkyMiles membership, but its published terms do not require Medallion status. The traveler using the benefit must be at least 21.
Does an award ticket qualify?
Yes. Delta says both paid tickets and Award Travel can qualify when the route, operating carrier and case meet the other rules.
Which California airports participate?
Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento and Sonoma County participate. Los Angeles, Burbank, Fresno, Ontario, Orange County, Palm Springs, San Diego and Santa Barbara are not on Delta's current list.
Can I use the benefit when flying into California?
No. It applies when the eligible itinerary departs from a participating airport. Arriving there does not create a free wine-case allowance for the inbound flight.
Can I connect on the way home?
Yes, when the trip starts at a participating airport, ends in the United States and every relevant segment is marketed and operated by Delta or Delta Connection. Recheck the itinerary after any disruption.
Does a Delta codeshare on a partner airline qualify?
No. Delta's terms exclude codeshare or other nonparticipating flights. Check the operating airline shown for each segment, not only the flight number.
How many bottles can the free case contain?
Up to 12 bottles, each holding 750 ml. They must be unopened and retain their original labels. A larger-format bottle does not fit the published bottle definition merely because the total volume is similar.
What happens if the case weighs more than 50 pounds?
The free-case waiver no longer covers the excess. Delta says additional, overweight and oversize fees apply. The airline can also refuse packaging that it considers unsuitable.
Should I seal the wine box before reaching the airport?
Keep it accessible for inspection. Delta may ask to see inside at the ticket counter, so permanent sealing before inspection can slow or prevent acceptance. Bring suitable tape or straps to secure it afterward.
Is Delta responsible if a bottle breaks?
Do not assume so. Delta says wine is transported at the customer's risk, and fragile-item liability limits can apply. Use protective packaging and consider separate insurance or professional shipping for valuable bottles.
Recheck the benefit before departure
Read Delta's live Wine Takes Flight terms before the winery visit and again before check-in. Confirm the departure airport, final US destination, operating carrier, membership number, bottle count, finished weight, outside dimensions and inspection-ready packaging.
This page should be updated if Delta changes the participating airports, launch status, eligible carriers, domestic boundary, bottle limit, packing standard or fee waiver.
