Friday is the shortest and latest start

Hart Plaza opens at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Miles Electric Band plays the Carhartt Amphitheater Stage at 7 p.m., followed by Joe Lovano's Paramount Quartet at 9:15 p.m. The Midtown After Hours program begins at 10:45 p.m. at the Valade Jazz Center, so moving there is a separate late-night plan rather than a casual stage change.

Saturday has the broadest evening choice

Saturday includes Ravi Coltrane at 7 p.m. and Kurt Elling with Yellowjackets at 9:15 p.m. at the amphitheater. Bob James plays the JPMorganChase Stage at 8:45 p.m., while Artemis starts at the Waterfront Stage at 9 p.m. Those overlapping sets force a choice. Decide before the evening crowd settles into the chair areas.

Sunday puts Joe Lovano and Take 6 on the same stage

Joe Lovano and the Dave Douglas Quintet start at 7 p.m. at the amphitheater, followed by Take 6 at 9:15 p.m. Dee Dee Bridgewater starts at 8:45 p.m. on the JPMorganChase Stage, and Vijay Iyer Trio begins at 9:10 p.m. on the Waterfront Stage. Monday finishes earlier

Monday closes at 8 p.m. Cindy Blackman Santana plays at 4 p.m., Ron Carter & Foursight at 5 p.m. on the Waterfront Stage, and the Coltrane 100 program closes the amphitheater from 6 p.m. Monday works for visitors who prefer an earlier finish, but the Ann Arbor shuttle has different return times that day.

Understand the new Hart Plaza layout

The Carhartt Amphitheater, JPMorganChase and Waterfront stages are all inside Hart Plaza in 2026. Previous visitors should not assume the old downtown footprint still applies. The consolidation reduces the distance between the main stages, but it also concentrates foot traffic around the entrances, seating areas and food vendors.

The fourth stage is the Detroit Jazz Hall inside the Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center at Wayne State University. It is about three miles north in Midtown, not another corner of Hart Plaza. The center hosts daytime school programming and late Midtown After Hours sets. Leave a proper travel margin if you plan to attend both venues.

Save the official PDF rather than relying on a search image. The PDF combines the map and schedule, while an older screenshot can send you toward a stage layout that no longer exists.

Coolers, backpacks, chairs and water

The 2026 cooler rule is easy to miss because older advice remains online. The current festival FAQ says no coolers are allowed at Hart Plaza. It notes that medical exceptions may be made, but it does not promise an automatic exception or explain an application process.

There is no attendee storage on the grounds. A rejected cooler cannot be left at the gate. Bring only what you can keep with you, and do not assume a backpack means access to every reserved or controlled area.

Food vendors operate inside the footprint. If someone in your group has a medical dietary requirement, contact the organizer before arrival instead of treating the general food wording as a medical policy.

Getting to Hart Plaza without depending on parking

Hart Plaza sits beside the Detroit River at the foot of Woodward Avenue. The festival directs visitors to FAST buses, the Detroit People Mover and QLINE. The closest choice depends on where you start and whether you are continuing to Midtown later.

The festival lists these special People Mover operating hours:

• Friday, September 4 and Saturday, September 5: 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.
• Sunday, September 6: 10 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.
• Monday, September 7: 6:30 a.m. to midnight

Check the Detroit People Mover before boarding because an event schedule does not rule out a same-day service change. QLINE runs along Woodward Avenue and is the more relevant rail option for movement between downtown and Midtown. Check its live service information before relying on it for a late performance.

FAST buses connect suburban corridors with downtown. The festival also links D2A2 and DAX as options from Ann Arbor and Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Verify the current stop and last departure with the operator rather than using the festival list as a timetable.

Parking needs a live check

The official FAQ lists One Detroit Garage, Two Detroit Garage, One Campus Martius Garage, Financial District Garage and Greektown Garage for the downtown venue. It also lists Wayne State's Forest Structure for the Valade Jazz Center.

One parking reservation link embedded in the FAQ still contains a 2025 date. That makes it a poor source for 2026 price or availability. Search the named garage directly, confirm the entry time and check road access before paying. A nearby garage is not useful if the approach is closed or its exit conflicts with the final set.

Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti festival shuttle

Golden Limousine and WEMU operate a paid shuttle on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. It does not run for Friday's opening program.

Saturday and Sunday departures leave Skyline High School in Ann Arbor at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. They leave the EMU George Gervin GameAbove Center in Ypsilanti at 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Return buses leave Huntington Place in Detroit at 6 p.m., 9 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.

Monday has one outbound trip from each pickup point: 11 a.m. from Skyline and 11:30 a.m. from EMU. Return buses leave Huntington Place at 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

The published fare is $15 each way. A round trip requires two separately reserved one-way tickets, so buying an outbound seat does not reserve the ride home. Use the 2026 shuttle booking instructions and confirm both tickets before traveling.

Accessibility and a lower-walking plan

The Information and Accessibility booth is at the front Hart Plaza entrance. Accessible restrooms are available across the festival footprint. The organizer encourages visitors who need a wheelchair or scooter to bring their own device; a limited number of wheelchairs can be rented with valid identification.

The three-stage Hart Plaza layout reduces the downtown spread, but the grounds are mostly concrete and include uneven areas. Shade and covered seating are limited. A lower-walking plan should choose one stage area for the longest block, use the People Mover or QLINE for the wider journey, and avoid adding Midtown unless the Valade Center performance is a priority.

Every performance is livestreamed. That gives a visitor who needs a break a way to follow another stage on a personal device, but it does not reserve a seat or guarantee mobile capacity in a crowd.

Bringing children to the festival

The festival is free, which makes a shorter family visit possible without trying to recover a ticket cost. The practical constraints are concrete surfaces, limited shade, late headline sets and marked chair zones.

For younger children, arrive for one afternoon block and choose a single stage area.
