DiscoverEU October 2026: deadline, groups and travel costs
The DiscoverEU October 2026 application closes on October 15 at 12:00, Brussels time. If you were born in 2008 and meet the citizenship or residence requirements, apply through the European Youth Portal. Friends can apply together, but each person must finish their own registration.
The European Commission's September 29 announcement confirms the October 1 to 15 window. Put the deadline in your calendar using Brussels as the time zone. Noon in Brussels is not necessarily noon where you live.
The award is a travel pass, not an all-expenses-paid holiday. Before inviting friends or choosing a route, separate three decisions: whether you qualify, how your group applies, and what you can afford after the train fare.

Who can apply in the October round?
The official DiscoverEU page lists birth dates from January 1 to December 31, 2008, inclusive. Eligible citizenship or residence includes EU Member States, their specified outermost regions and associated overseas territories, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Türkiye.
You must enter an identity-card, passport or residence-permit number and accept the application declaration. Use the official form's eligibility checks rather than assuming that studying somewhere, visiting Europe or holding any European passport is enough.
The portal also announces the United Kingdom's participation from 2027. That announcement does not add the UK to the October 2026 eligibility list. If your circumstances involve more than one citizenship or residence, check the current rules before submitting.
How do friends apply with a group code?
Under the autumn application rules, groups can have up to five eligible people. The leader answers the quiz and subsidiary question, then shares the application code. Each friend registers with that code and supplies their personal details before the deadline.
Members skip the quiz; the leader does not. A solo applicant can join or add friends before closing through the official procedure. Submit only one application per person.
A useful group check is to ask each friend to confirm that their registration is complete, rather than treating a code sent in a chat as proof of submission. Keep your own confirmation email and code somewhere you can find them again.
Do not share identity documents in a public travel-buddy thread. Getting to know potential companions and registering for the award are separate tasks. Talk about sleeping arrangements, budgets, pace and what happens if someone wants to leave early before making joint bookings.
Does applying first guarantee a pass?
No. The rules rank eligible applications by quiz answers, then the subsidiary answer, within country quotas. Submission time is the final tie-breaker. Results are planned for January 2027.
Apply with enough time to check your details and receive confirmation, but do not confuse an early submission with guaranteed selection. Avoid paying a stranger for a supposed winning answer or pass allocation.
Seven travel days are not a seven-day holiday
The official portal gives selected applicants seven travel days within a maximum one-month period, with travel authorized from March 1, 2027 to May 31, 2028. Those seven days are the days you use the pass for travel, not necessarily the number of nights away.
The contractor's getting-started guide explains the mobile-pass process. Each traveler has a separate pass. Journeys must be recorded and added to the pass before boarding; travel in your residence country is limited to the outbound and inbound journeys.
Here is a planning example, not a checked timetable: spend several nights in Paris, then several in a German city, rather than changing accommodation every morning. You gain time to visit places and recover from long journeys. Check the actual cross-border route, connections and reservation requirements before deciding whether that pair works from your home base.
Count your journey home too. A route that consumes every travel day getting to the final city can leave you needing a separately paid return ticket.
What do you still need to pay for?
Budget for accommodation, food, insurance, local transport and extras. The rules provide up to four eligible seat reservations free, with exclusions for first class, night-train sleeping accommodation and unlisted trains. Check the booking conditions.
Use a simple budget before choosing the longest possible trip. This is an illustrative calculation, not a hostel or meal-price quote:
| Expense | Assumption | Subtotal |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation | 12 nights at EUR35 | EUR420 |
| Food | 13 days at EUR20 | EUR260 |
| Combined | Before other expenses | EUR680 |
A EUR700 budget would leave EUR20 for everything else. That is a reason to shorten or reshape the trip, not evidence that EUR700 covers two weeks in every destination. Price real accommodation for your dates, then add local tickets, paid reservations, insurance and a reserve for a missed connection.
The official pre-trip information kit recommends tracking spending, carrying documents and keeping people at home informed of your itinerary. Its accessibility resources are worth checking before you commit to a station or accommodation.
When do you confirm the pass and choose a start date?
Autumn 2026 winners must activate their pass by March 15, 2027. The rules explain that this means selecting the future start date of the one-month validity period. You can change it before that chosen date begins.
Follow the personal booking link and identity-verification instructions you receive. Do not copy another round's deadline from a forum. Choosing a future start date and starting the travel month are different events, so check the displayed date before confirming.
Prepare the DiscoverEU Travel app before boarding
The DiscoverEU pass conditions currently require internet access to create a ticket before boarding. During pass validity, authentication is required at least every 24 hours. Connect and open the app so it registers the connection; simply reconnecting the phone is not enough.
An already-created ticket can be displayed offline subject to those conditions. The phone must still have enough battery and a readable screen. These are DiscoverEU-specific conditions: do not rely on an older 72-hour rule you saw for another rail pass.
Make this a morning check on travel days:
- Open the pass app while you have working internet.
- Check the date, journey and ticket before reaching the platform.
- Keep required seat reservations easy to find.
- Charge your phone and bring a power bank.
- Save accommodation addresses and offline maps separately.
Use the rail operator's own service information for disruption checks. A reservation email, a map pin and a valid mobile pass each solve a different problem. If the ticket will not display, contact the official support service before boarding rather than assuming a screenshot will be accepted.
Do you need extra mobile data for the trip?
Start with your home plan. Your Europe's roaming guidance explains the EU roaming framework and fair-use limits. If your allowance covers every stop and is sufficient, buying another plan may be unnecessary.
Check the entire route, including transit countries. DiscoverEU eligibility, train-pass coverage and your operator's roaming countries are different lists. Downloading maps helps, but it does not replace the pass app's required online checks.
For a route outside your home plan's allowance, OpenSim's Europe plans provide a regional option covering countries including France, Germany, Switzerland, Serbia and Türkiye in the current catalog. The practical advantage over buying separate country plans is matching one regional plan to a multi-country route. It is useful only if the selected plan includes every stop and fits your trip.
Check coverage, validity and current terms shortly before your 2027 or 2028 departure, not just when applying this October. Use our travel-data calculator for maps and messaging, phone compatibility guide before purchasing, and installation timing guide before departure. Purchase-ready readers can compare the established Europe eSIM options.
What to do before October 15
Complete the official form, retain the confirmation and check that every group member has registered. Make a provisional budget, but leave expensive non-refundable bookings until you understand your award and travel arrangements.
