EgyptAir Riyadh flights suspended: change and refund options

EgyptAir has suspended its flights from Cairo and Alexandria to Riyadh until operations resume at King Khalid International Airport. The airline has not published a restart date, so a flight that still appears in an older itinerary should not be treated as confirmed.

Passengers with confirmed tickets on affected flights have two stated choices. They may move to another direct destination in Saudi Arabia served by EgyptAir without a change fee or fare difference, or cancel and request a refund without a cancellation fee under the applicable procedure.

The practical answer: retrieve the booking and confirm whether the exact sector is affected. If you want to travel, ask EgyptAir or the ticket issuer which direct Saudi destinations are available under the fee-free option and have every remaining segment reissued in writing. If you no longer want the trip, confirm what will be refunded before submitting a request.

This page was checked at 9:15 p.m. in Cairo and 10:15 p.m. in Riyadh on October 11, 2026. Airline and airport conditions can change quickly.

What EgyptAir has confirmed

Egypt's State Information Service published the airline's notice on October 11. It says EgyptAir flights from Cairo and Alexandria to Riyadh are suspended until operations resume, with the decision coordinated with Saudi civil aviation authorities.

The wording does not give an end date, list flight numbers or promise that service will restart at a particular hour. It also describes flights going to Riyadh, so passengers booked from Riyadh should check their individual reservation rather than assume the same wording automatically decides the return sector.

EgyptAir says its Integrated Operations Center is monitoring the situation and will issue updates. King Khalid International Airport's official site has arrival and departure searches, but a general airport result does not confirm that EgyptAir will operate a particular service.

How the fee-free Saudi route change works

The special option is narrower than an open reroute. It applies to passengers holding confirmed tickets on flights affected by the cancellation and allows a change to another direct Saudi destination served by EgyptAir, without a change fee or fare difference.

Ask the airline to name the destinations and dates actually available for your ticket. The notice does not promise a seat on every Saudi route, travel on another airline, a connection within Saudi Arabia, surface transport from the new arrival airport or reimbursement for that onward journey.

Before accepting, compare the replacement airport with your real destination. Riyadh is a long ground journey from other Saudi gateways. Price the train, coach, car or replacement flight, and check whether a visa or transit condition changes. A fee-free airline change can still create substantial ground costs.

Use EgyptAir's My Bookings page to retrieve the itinerary. A destination change may require the call center, sales office or issuing agent rather than the self-service date-change tool. Get the new ticket number, flight numbers and status of every remaining sector in writing before ending the conversation.

Refunds, agents and the rest of the ticket

The notice says a passenger who cancels an affected ticket may receive a refund without a cancellation fee under the applicable procedure. That is not a promise that every already-used sector, separate booking or consequential expense will be repaid.

EgyptAir's conditions of carriage say an involuntary refund after a carrier cancellation is based on whether any part of the ticket has been used. If none has been used, the stated amount is the fare paid. If part has been used, the calculation is no less than the difference between the fare paid and the applicable fare for the travel already taken.

Ask the issuer to state:

  1. which flight is recorded as cancelled;
  2. whether the refund covers the whole ticket or only the unused portion;
  3. what happens to the return and onward sectors;
  4. where the money will be returned; and
  5. whether the request must go through the travel agent that issued the ticket.

EgyptAir provides an online refund form, but do not submit it until you understand which sectors it will cancel. If a travel agent or booking site issued the ticket, start with that issuer and keep the case number, screenshots and written response.

Protect connections, return flights and separate bookings

A suspended Riyadh sector can make a later flight unusable even if that later flight still shows as operating. For one-ticket journeys, ask the issuer to protect the complete itinerary and confirm baggage handling. Do not skip the first sector and assume the rest will stay active.

Separate tickets are separate contracts. EgyptAir's action does not automatically change another airline, hotel, visa appointment or ground booking. Contact each supplier before its no-show deadline and ask whether it will make a disruption exception. Keep receipts, but do not assume that EgyptAir or travel insurance will cover a replacement you buy without approval.

If you accept a different Saudi arrival airport, check how you will reach Riyadh and whether the journey is realistic for children, reduced mobility, medication, checked bags or a fixed appointment. Confirm where checked baggage will be tagged and whether it must be collected during any connection.

Check the airline and airport separately

EgyptAir's flight-status page covers yesterday, today and tomorrow by flight number or route. Check the booking as well, because a generic route search can lag behind ticket-specific rebooking.

Use the airport's status board as a second check. If one system shows a flight and the other shows it cancelled or missing, contact EgyptAir through the official contact page before going to the terminal. Avoid phone numbers copied from unofficial search results.

Save the original itinerary, the disruption notice and any replacement confirmation offline. Keep passports, Saudi entry documents, medication, chargers and one night's essentials in hand luggage. Follow instructions from the airline, airport staff and Saudi authorities; a schedule listing is not a safety assessment.

Mobile data for a changed Egypt-Saudi journey

An Egypt OpenSim eSIM can provide ground-based data for booking messages and transport planning before departure. A Saudi Arabia OpenSim eSIM can support maps, airline contact and a changed arrival plan after landing. The Middle East and North Africa plan listed both Egypt and Saudi Arabia when checked on October 11, which may suit a journey that needs coverage at both ends.

Check the selected package's current country list, allowance, validity, network, hotspot support and top-up field at checkout. Install it on an unlocked compatible phone while reliable Wi-Fi is available. Keep the usual SIM active if the airline or bank sends verification texts to that number. An eSIM provides mobile data where the plan has coverage; it cannot restore flights or replace official instructions.

Ten questions about the EgyptAir Riyadh suspension

Which EgyptAir routes to Riyadh are suspended?

The notice names flights from Cairo and Alexandria to Riyadh. It does not provide a flight-number list, so retrieve the booking and check the exact sector with EgyptAir or the ticket issuer.

When will EgyptAir flights to Riyadh resume?

No verified restart time has been published. The airline says the suspension lasts until operations resume at King Khalid International Airport and that its operations center is monitoring the situation.

Can I change to Jeddah or another Saudi airport for free?

The stated option is another direct Saudi destination served by EgyptAir, without a change fee or fare difference, for confirmed tickets on affected flights. Ask EgyptAir which destinations and dates are available; the notice does not name them individually.

Does EgyptAir pay for travel from the new airport to Riyadh?

The public notice does not promise ground transport or reimbursement after an alternative Saudi arrival. Work out that cost and travel time before accepting the change, and ask for any additional commitment in writing.

Can I get a refund instead of changing the flight?

Yes, the notice says passengers may cancel affected tickets and receive a refund without a cancellation fee under the applicable procedure. Confirm whether the request covers the full ticket or only its unused portion before submitting it.

What if I booked EgyptAir through a travel agent?

Contact the company shown as the ticket issuer on the receipt. Give it the booking reference, ticket number and airline notice, then ask who will make the change or refund and how the remaining itinerary will be protected.

Will my return flight stay active if the outbound is cancelled?

Do not assume it will. Ask the issuer to confirm every segment after a change or refund. Missing an outbound flight or cancelling the wrong portion can affect later sectors on the same ticket.

What happens to a connection on another ticket?

It is not automatically protected. Contact the other airline before its deadline, explain the EgyptAir disruption and request a written exception. Compare that response before buying a replacement.

Should I go to Cairo, Alexandria or Riyadh airport anyway?

Not until the exact booking and flight status support travel. Check EgyptAir and the relevant airport separately, and contact the airline if they conflict. A general airport reopening does not itself confirm the EgyptAir flight.

Can an eSIM help during the suspension?

It can provide ground-based data for status checks, maps, messages and changed transport where the selected plan has coverage. It cannot guarantee connectivity during an emergency, operate a flight or replace airline and authority instructions.

Before you accept a change or refund

Choose based on the whole journey, not only the suspended sector. A different Saudi airport may preserve the trip but add a costly transfer. A refund may suit a cancelled journey but could also remove return or onward flights you still need.

We will update this page if EgyptAir names a restart time, changes the affected routes, revises the Saudi alternative or refund terms, or publishes a materially different operating notice. Until then, the booking record and direct airline confirmation are the decision points.
