Floriade Canberra 2026 guide: dates, parking and buses

Floriade Canberra 2026 runs from Saturday, September 12 to Sunday, October 11 at Commonwealth Park. Daytime entry is free and does not require registration. The awkward part is getting to the gate: construction has changed nearby walking and bus access, parking around the park is limited, and two eastbound ramps may close on weekends and public holidays.

The short answer: arrive near 9:30 a.m. for a quieter first circuit, use the free shuttle from the City Interchange or National Triangle, and do not aim directly for Commonwealth Park parking unless you hold an accessible permit. Save the shuttle map and program before leaving. NightFest is a separate ticketed event from October 1 to 4, with no ordinary pass outs after entry.

Floriade 2026 at a glance

Choose the date before choosing the program

Floriade is open for 30 days, so there is no need to force every visitor into opening weekend. The main garden beds, daily entertainment and food stalls operate throughout the season. The program then adds date-specific demonstrations, workshops and performances.

The opening morning includes a free live floristry demonstration from Canberra Institute of Technology. Weekday garden tours are listed from September 14 through October 9. Family activities include paper crafts on selected weekends, Gnome Knoll on weekends and during the September 28 to October 9 school-holiday period, and circus workshops from October 6 to 9. Some sessions are free but still require advance booking. Check the current program rather than assuming free daytime entry means every activity is walk-up.

Public discussions repeatedly ask when the flowers look best. Bloom timing depends on weather and cannot be guaranteed by an old forum answer. Opening weekend gives visitors the first program dates. A weekday usually offers the simpler transport frequency and sensory-hour option. School holidays add more children's programming, but they can also bring larger family crowds. Choose from those tradeoffs instead of waiting for an unsupported "peak bloom" date.

October 11 is Dogs' Day Out and the final public day. Dogs other than assistance animals are not allowed on the other dates. The Great Big Bulb Dig follows on October 12 and is a separate post-festival event.

Daytime Floriade is free, NightFest is not

General daytime entry does not need a ticket or registration. Paid rides, workshops, food and selected experiences sit inside that free event. The official FAQ currently lists a Ferris wheel ride at AUD 12 per person and says ride payments can be made by card. Check the live page before budgeting because those prices are operational details, not permanent admission rules.

NightFest runs from Thursday, October 1 through Sunday, October 4. Gates are listed from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., with final entry at 10 p.m. It has a separate paid ticket. The program is spread across several stages rather than one central performance area.

NightFest does not offer ordinary pass outs. Eat, collect warm clothing and settle any child-care needs before entering. Chairs are allowed, but the organizer asks visitors to place them at the back or side of grass viewing areas. A daytime visit does not roll automatically into the night session: the daytime site closes first, and NightFest ticket holders enter for the evening.

Use the free Floriade shuttle from the city

The daily free shuttle links the City Interchange, London Circuit, Regatta Point gate, National Library, Parkes Place East, Kings Avenue and Canberra Centre.

On weekdays it runs every 20 minutes. On weekends and public holidays it runs every 10 minutes. The first departure from the City Interchange is at 9:30 a.m., and the final daytime departure leaves Floriade at 5:30 p.m. That final time is the last bus, not the moment to begin walking from the far side of the park.

During NightFest, the city shuttle runs every 10 minutes. The first city departure is at 6 p.m. and the final bus leaves Floriade at 10:45 p.m. Save the current shuttle map because light-rail works and temporary access arrangements can change the familiar pickup point.

Weekend and public-holiday express buses also run hourly from Belconnen and from Tuggeranong via Woden. The current listing uses Platform 1 at Belconnen Interchange, Platform 8 at Tuggeranong and Platform 6 at Woden. Those services extend into NightFest on October 1 to 4, with the final departure from Floriade at 10:45 p.m.

Canberra Airport to Floriade

Canberra Airport's current transport page lists Rapid 3 between the terminal and City Interchange seven days a week. It gives a journey time of under 20 minutes, with 15-minute weekday and 30-minute weekend frequency. At City Interchange, change to the free Floriade shuttle or follow the current 15-minute walking route.

Canberra public transport uses MyWay+. A short-term visitor can tap on and off with an accepted physical bank card or a card in a phone or watch wallet without creating an account. The airport also has a ticket machine by baggage claim.

Do not combine the airport estimate and the city walk into a tight arrival promise. Add time for baggage, the R3 wait, the shuttle connection and the final walk through the correct gate. A taxi or rideshare can use the Regatta Place drop-off, but it cannot wait or park there.

Parking near Commonwealth Park is the wrong first target

The organizer directs drivers to park in the city or National Triangle and then use the shuttle or walk. Suggested alternatives include Canberra Olympic Pool, CIT Reid, the National Convention Centre car park and Wilson New Acton. They have different payment rules, opening times and walking approaches, so use the live parking map rather than memorizing one old recommendation.

The National Capital Authority lists possible weekend and public-holiday closures from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the Parkes Way eastbound exit to Commonwealth Avenue southbound and the Parkes Way eastbound exit to Allara Street northbound. Traffic marshals may also change access when needed. A navigation app can route toward a ramp before it receives the temporary event closure.

There is no ordinary parking at the Regatta Place drop-off. General coaches also cannot park in the usual Regatta Point or Acton Park coach areas during the event. Drivers need a confirmed legal space after passengers leave the vehicle.

Visitors with a valid disability parking permit can use the limited free area beside Regatta Point Entry Gate. Interstate and overseas disability permits are accepted under the event's current guidance. Regatta Point also has a closer drop-off. Allara Street reaches Parkes Way Entry Gate over a footbridge with a gradient, which may not suit every mobility need.

The nearest bus stop has changed

Transport Canberra says the northbound Commonwealth Avenue stop nearest Regatta Point, stop 8889, is closed because of infrastructure work. Southbound stop 8888 remains the closest regular stop and is served by routes R2, R4, R5, R6, R7, R10, 57 and 58 in the current notice.

That asymmetry matters on the return. The stop used to arrive may not provide the reverse journey. Check MyWay+ or the Transport Canberra journey planner from the actual exit before walking to the kerb. The free shuttle is often the clearer return to the city because it is designed around the event gates.

Light rail ends in the city rather than beside Commonwealth Park. The organizer describes the walk from the city light-rail stop as about 15 minutes. Construction has changed the Commonwealth Avenue approach, so follow the 2026 pedestrian map and event signs, not a previous-year screenshot.

Strollers, wheelchairs and the sensory-hour conflict

The event permits strollers, wheelchairs and mobility scooters. Paths are wide, but the organizer warns that the 1.6 km circuit includes loose granite and can hold water after rain. Limited wheelchairs, walking frames, mobility scooters and strollers are available for hire through the Mobility Marquee. Reserve in advance when the equipment is essential because "limited" is not a walk-up guarantee.

A parents and carers room provides a change table, low seating, stools, microwaves and nearby accessible toilets. The FAQ says all accessible toilets include a baby-change table. That makes a full circuit easier with an infant, but families should still mark the room on the current map before a feed or change becomes urgent.

Two official pages disagree on the Sensory Hour. The FAQ says 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on weekdays excluding public holidays. The current conditions page says 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The gates are otherwise listed as opening at 9:30 a.m. Do not resolve that conflict by guessing. Contact Events ACT or check the accessibility page before traveling specifically for the quiet period.

Food, bags and weather

Visitors may bring their own food and non-alcoholic drinks. Alcohol can be consumed only when bought from a licensed event trader. Bringing a picnic is a practical answer to the long food queues described in past public discussions, especially with young children or dietary needs. It also avoids making one busy vendor the center of the day.

Bag searches are allowed. Prohibited items include glass, alcohol brought from outside, bicycles, recreational scooters and skates, drones, weapons, fireworks and illegal substances. Mobility devices are permitted. There is no published universal bag-size limit on the pages reviewed, so do not invent one from another Canberra event.

Canberra spring weather can change between a sunny morning and a cold or wet afternoon. Check the Bureau of Meteorology Canberra forecast shortly before leaving. A realistic two-hour and half-day plan

For a two-hour visit, enter near opening, walk one garden-bed loop, choose one scheduled demonstration or family activity, then leave before lunch demand builds. This works for a visitor adding Floriade to the National Gallery, Questacon or Parliament House rather than treating it as the only event of the day.

For a half day, arrive at 9:30 a.m., complete the main circuit before stopping, attend one preselected program item, and eat around noon. Families can add Gnome Knoll or Floriade Sprouts when those activities are operating. Keep one unplanned hour because the site is four hectares and children will not move at timetable speed.

Do not book a paid workshop and an airport departure against the same narrow window. The shuttle is frequent, but construction, crowds and an indirect gate can still consume the margin.

Apps and files worth preparing

The official Floriade site is the source for the current program, favorites, maps and notices. MyWay+ covers Canberra bus and light-rail planning and payment options. EasyPark or the current City Services map helps with city parking. The Bureau of Meteorology app or website covers the local forecast.

Save these before entering Commonwealth Park:

1. The current event and shuttle maps.
2. Any NightFest or paid-activity ticket.
3. Two program choices with their times and locations.
4. The return shuttle stop and final departure.
5. A screenshot of the airport or hotel route.
6. A physical family meeting point near a named gate.

Live data still matters after taking screenshots. The offline copy is a fallback for congestion, a flat battery in another family member's phone or a temporary login problem.

Mobile data during Floriade

The program, MyWay+ journey updates, parking tools, weather and group messages all use mobile data. None of them removes the need for offline tickets, maps and a meeting point when a busy site slows a network.

Exact operators, data, validity, hotspot use and top-up eligibility remain package specific, so read the selected card before buying.
