FRITZ!Box 6835 5G adds eSIM and power-bank support
FRITZ! showed the FRITZ!Box 6835 5G at IFA 2026 with both eSIM and nano-SIM support. The compact router combines 5G mobile broadband, dual-band Wi-Fi 7 and USB-C power, so it can run from a suitable power bank when a wall socket is unavailable.
Those features make it interesting for a holiday home, camper, temporary workspace or group trip. They do not guarantee that a phone-focused travel eSIM can be installed in the router. The package terms and the router's eSIM setup must both allow the use.
The traveler answer: the FRITZ!Box 6835 5G is flexible hardware for sharing one cellular connection, but FRITZ! has not published a price or retail date. Confirm router compatibility with the chosen provider before buying any plan. For one unlocked phone, Roaming eSIM remains the simpler setup because it needs no separate router or power source.
What FRITZ! revealed at IFA 2026
The FRITZ!Box 6835 5G supports standalone and non-standalone 5G, plus 4G fallback. FRITZ! quotes theoretical mobile downloads up to 2 Gbit/s and uploads up to 900 Mbit/s. These are modem limits, not typical travel speeds.
Its Wi-Fi 7 radio uses the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands, with a stated combined maximum of about 3.5 Gbit/s. Wired devices can use one 2.5-gigabit LAN port and one 1-gigabit LAN port.
The router accepts a nano-SIM or eSIM. USB-C provides power, and FRITZ! specifically says a USB-C power bank can operate it. The announcement does not describe a built-in battery, so mobile use requires an external power source.
FRITZ! also positions the router as a backup connection for another FRITZ!Box. That is useful for homes and small offices with an eligible mobile plan, but it is separate from the question of whether a travel plan permits permanent or high-volume router traffic.
eSIM hardware support is only half of compatibility
An eSIM-capable router needs a provider profile that it can install and use. Some travel data products are designed only for phones and tablets. Some permit hotspot use from a phone but do not permit installation directly in a router. Others may require an app flow that the router cannot complete.
Before paying, obtain written answers to these questions from the provider:
- Is the FRITZ!Box 6835 5G an allowed device?
- Can its eSIM profile be installed through a QR code or activation data?
- Does the plan allow router and multi-device use?
- What APN or authentication details are required?
- Does the allowance have hotspot, fair-use or reduced-speed limits?
- Can a deleted profile be reinstalled?
Do not infer router support from the single word hotspot. Tethering from a supported phone and direct installation in a router are different technical and contractual uses.
Check mobile bands for every destination
FRITZ! lists broad 5G and 4G band support, including common European bands. That does not make the router universal. The local network must use a supported band, and the selected plan must have access to that network.
This matters for trips outside Europe and for rural routes where lower-frequency coverage bands are important. Compare the exact 6835 specification with the carriers available through the chosen plan. Country coverage does not guarantee every local carrier or band.
Placement matters too. The router includes an alignment aid, but a device behind metal, tinted glass or thick walls can receive a weaker signal. Test several positions and avoid leaving it where heat or theft becomes a risk.
Wi-Fi 7 does not make the mobile network faster
The local Wi-Fi link can be faster than the internet connection feeding it. A 3.5 Gbit/s Wi-Fi headline does not mean a traveler will download at that rate over 5G.
Actual performance depends on the local carrier, spectrum, signal, congestion, plan priority, fair-use rules and the number of connected devices. Every laptop and phone shares the same mobile allowance and connection.
For messaging, navigation and ordinary browsing, a slower link may still be comfortable. Large cloud backups, system updates and video streaming can use a fixed allowance quickly. Pause automatic updates and measure usage from the router dashboard.
A power bank makes it portable, not cordless by itself
USB-C power is a practical choice because travelers may already carry compatible chargers and batteries. Check the router's required voltage and wattage against the power bank and cable. A USB-C connector alone does not prove the battery can supply the required power profile.
Runtime will depend on the power bank capacity, conversion loss, signal, Wi-Fi load and connected devices. Test the full setup before travel and keep the router ventilated. For a vehicle, use safe mounting and a suitable power adapter.
Airline rules generally require spare lithium batteries in hand luggage, with capacity limits and protection against short circuits. Confirm the current policy with the airline rather than packing a large battery by habit.
Price and retail timing are still missing
FRITZ!'s September IFA material provides specifications but no consumer price or firm on-sale date for the 6835. A showcase is not the same as retail availability.
Travelers with a near-term departure should not plan around the router until an authorized seller shows stock and the correct regional model. Check the warranty region, return policy, included power equipment and software support.
Ignore listings that borrow the 6835 name but cannot identify the seller, delivery date or model region. Waiting for an official product page is safer than assuming every IFA device ships immediately.
Phone-first travel data remains easier for one person
Roaming eSIM product pages are designed around compatible unlocked phones. The chosen package shows its destination, data allowance, validity and package-specific features before checkout. A traveler can install it without buying or powering a separate Wi-Fi router.
That does not make the phone option better for every group. The FRITZ!Box can serve laptops, televisions and devices without eSIM support from one connection. It also offers wired ports and home-network features that a phone hotspot does not.
