Hainan Airlines now flies nonstop between Haikou Meilan International Airport (HAK) and Penang International Airport (PEN). The first HU477 operated on October 11, 2026, and the airline lists the route on Wednesdays and Sundays. Check the time shown in your booking rather than copying the inaugural timetable because public sources published different times while the route was being prepared.

The short answer: HU477 and HU478 link Haikou and Penang every Wednesday and Sunday. The route is operating, but its early planning timetable changed. Use the local time and date on the issued ticket, then recheck the flight with Hainan Airlines before leaving for the airport.

The route started on October 11

The inaugural HU477 reached Penang on the evening of October 11. A local report from the arrival recorded about 110 passengers and a water salute, while ECNS reported that the route had launched with Boeing 737-series aircraft.

That confirms an operating service rather than an announcement alone. It does not guarantee a particular aircraft on a later date. Seat maps and aircraft can change for operational reasons, so plan around the flight number and booking, not a promised model.

HU477 and HU478 fly twice a week

FlightDirectionPublished operating daysTiming to verify
HU477Haikou to PenangWednesday and SundayLocal departure and arrival shown in the booking
HU478Penang to HaikouWednesday and SundayLocal departure and next-day arrival shown in the booking

Hainan Airlines' current flight-information page lists HU477 and HU478 on Wednesdays and Sundays. The original Penang announcement gave HU477 a 17:30 Haikou departure and 20:45 Penang arrival, with HU478 leaving at 21:45 and reaching Haikou at 01:00 the following day. Earlier timetable reporting showed a different departure time.

Treat those launch figures as context, not a standing timetable. The issued itinerary and Hainan Airlines' flight-status tools should settle the time for a specific date. Remember that HU478 crosses midnight, so its Haikou arrival is on the next calendar day.

Check in at the airport even if the online step works

Hainan Airlines says online check-in is unavailable on some international routes. Its airport check-in guidance also says passengers may still need the counter for document checks, a boarding pass and checked baggage. Adults traveling with infants, unaccompanied children and passengers who requested special services cannot use the standard online process.

Do not use an online confirmation as a reason to arrive close to departure. Follow the cutoff in the booking, allow time for international document checks and look at the airport display for the actual counter and gate. Public route material does not establish a permanent terminal or counter for every departure.

Baggage depends on the fare and issued ticket

Hainan Airlines' current checked-baggage page lists different allowances across international fare products. It also sets a 32 kg maximum for a single checked piece, but that is a handling ceiling, not a free allowance for every passenger.

Read the baggage line on the ticket before buying an extra bag. If the trip continues beyond Haikou or Penang, ask where the bag will be tagged. Hainan Airlines describes through-checking for some eligible same-airline international connections via Haikou, but says availability depends on the route, customs approval, ground handling and connection time.

Protect yourself on separate tickets

A nonstop flight removes an intermediate airport, but it does not protect a separate onward booking. If HU477 or HU478 and the next flight have different ticket numbers, confirm whether the airlines will transfer baggage or help after a delay.

Leave enough time to pass entry formalities, collect bags, move to the next check-in area and meet the second airline's cutoff. With only two Hainan Airlines departures a week on this route, a missed return may be harder to replace than a missed daily service.

Check entry forms against your passport

Entry rules depend on nationality, travel purpose and the date of travel. Passengers arriving in Malaysia can use the official Malaysia Digital Arrival Card portal, which says the trip must be within three days of submission. Check the Malaysian Immigration Department for any exemption that applies to your passport rather than relying on an old forum answer.

Travelers entering China should make the same passport-specific check with the responsible Chinese authority and Hainan Airlines before departure. A visa-free arrangement for one nationality does not settle another traveler's case, and transit rules do not automatically apply to someone ending the journey in Haikou.

Choose data for Haikou, Penang or both

Choose a China eSIM for a trip centered on Haikou or a Malaysia eSIM for time in Penang. If the itinerary includes both countries, the Asia 12-area eSIM currently includes mainland China and Malaysia in the same regional coverage list.

Check the selected package's allowance, validity, speed notes and top-up status before checkout. These are data plans, not local phone numbers, and some local apps or services may still ask for a domestic number. An eSIM supplies ground mobile data; it does not work as inflight connectivity or change airline, immigration or airport rules.

Ten questions about Hainan Airlines' Penang route

Is the Haikou-Penang flight operating now?

Yes. The first HU477 arrived in Penang on October 11, 2026. Hainan Airlines now lists the route in its international flight information.

Which days do HU477 and HU478 fly?

The airline lists both directions on Wednesdays and Sundays. Recheck the date in the booking because a schedule change or irregular operation can alter an individual flight.

What time does the flight leave?

Use the local time printed on the current itinerary. The launch announcement and earlier timetable reporting did not agree on every time, so an old article is not a safe boarding reference.

Does HU478 arrive in Haikou on the same day?

The announced overnight pattern reached Haikou after midnight, on the next calendar day. Confirm the current arrival date on the itinerary before arranging a pickup or onward flight.

Can I check in online?

Possibly, but Hainan Airlines excludes some international journeys and passenger types. Plan to visit the airport counter for document verification, baggage and the boarding pass even if the online step succeeds.

Where can I find my checked-bag allowance?

There is no single route-wide answer. The free allowance depends on the fare, cabin and ticket, so read the issued allowance rather than treating the airline's 32 kg per-piece ceiling as a free entitlement.

Will my baggage transfer on a connection in Haikou?

It may on an eligible Hainan Airlines itinerary, but the airline says route and airport conditions matter. Ask the first counter and inspect the final airport code on the bag tag.

What happens if my onward flight is on another ticket?

Do not assume so. Unless the airlines confirm protection, allow for entry, baggage collection and a fresh check-in, and decide what you would do if the first flight runs late.

Do I need a Malaysia Digital Arrival Card?

Check the official portal for your status and passport. If the requirement applies, the portal says the trip must fall within three days of submission.

Can one OpenSim eSIM cover Haikou and Penang?

Yes, if you choose a live regional package whose coverage list includes mainland China and Malaysia. The Asia 12-area page currently does. A China-only or Malaysia-only plan covers only its listed destination.

Before your HAK-PEN departure

Recheck the operating day, local times, airport counter, bag allowance and passport-specific entry requirements. For a connection, confirm the ticket structure and the destination printed on the bag tag.

We will update this guide if Hainan Airlines materially changes the frequency, flight numbers, timetable, route status, check-in process or baggage rules. We will also revise the connectivity section if OpenSim's relevant country or regional coverage changes.
