India e-boarding pass rule: what changes on September 1
International passengers departing from India can now show an e-boarding pass on a smartphone at immigration. From September 1, 2026, immigration officers no longer stamp boarding passes. A printed pass is still accepted, but it will not receive an immigration stamp.
The change removes one paper requirement. It does not remove airline check-in, passport control, security screening, visa checks or the need for a boarding pass. It also does not guarantee that every airline can issue a mobile pass for every passenger and route.
This guide was checked at 00:05 WEST on September 1, 2026, against the Bureau of Immigration announcement as reported by current Indian news outlets, the official Fast Track Immigration Trusted Traveller Programme site and public traveler questions.
The traveler answer: use the airline's current e-boarding pass if it has issued one, save a wallet or offline copy before entering the airport, carry the passport and destination documents, and keep a printed pass when the airline or route requires it. The new rule means immigration accepts the pass on a phone. It does not make the phone the only acceptable option.
What changed at Indian airports
The Bureau of Immigration announced that international travelers can display e-boarding passes on smartphones during immigration clearance. Current reporting says the instruction applies across Indian airports handling international departures.
The New Indian Express report reproduces the Bureau's practical points: e-boarding passes are accepted, physical passes remain accepted, and boarding passes are no longer stamped during immigration clearance. The Economic Times also reports that airport operators, security personnel and other aviation stakeholders were informed before the start date.

This is a departure rule, not a paperless airport promise
The announcement concerns international passengers leaving India and the boarding pass presented during departure immigration. Do not apply it to an unrelated domestic flight, an arrival form, customs, or a foreign airport on the return journey.
It also does not mean every passenger receives a mobile boarding pass. An airline may withhold one until staff check a visa, passport, onward ticket or destination health document. Some routes, airports and passenger types can still require collection at a desk.
If the airline has not issued a boarding pass, a booking confirmation is not a substitute. Go to the airline counter. A payment receipt, itinerary email or travel-agent voucher may prove that a reservation exists, but immigration and the boarding gate need the valid boarding credential for that flight.
The new international departure sequence
1. Check in with the operating airline
Use the airline named as the operating carrier, especially on a codeshare. Complete online check-in when the carrier allows it. Confirm that the pass shows the passenger name, flight, date, departure airport and scannable code.
If the app says document verification is required, do not keep refreshing it outside the airport. Follow the airline's desk instructions and arrive within its published check-in window.
2. Save the pass outside the live app
Add the pass to the phone wallet when the airline supports it. Save the PDF locally or use the airline's documented offline method. A screenshot can be a useful backup for a static code, but it may fail when an airline uses a changing barcode or explicitly requires its app or wallet pass.

3. Keep the travel documents together
Carry the original passport and any visa, residence permit, transit document or destination evidence required for the route. The boarding pass change does not alter entry requirements in the destination country.
For a child, keep the child's pass with the child's travel document. Check airline and government instructions for consent documents when one parent or another adult travels with the child.
4. Present the pass at immigration
At a staffed counter, display the current e-boarding pass at readable brightness. Be ready to unlock the phone and open the pass again. A physical pass remains valid if that is what the airline issued or if a paper backup is easier.
Immigration will not stamp either format. Do not wait at the counter for a boarding-pass stamp that is no longer part of the process.
5. Keep the pass until the journey is complete
The boarding gate still needs it. A connection airport, baggage desk or disruption claim may also require the flight details. Keep the current pass and baggage receipt until the bag arrives and any mileage or expense issue is settled.
What to do if the phone fails
A digital pass is useful only when the phone can display it. Prepare for a flat battery, lost signal, expired app session, damaged screen or airline outage before joining the immigration queue.
Use this backup order:
- Save the pass to the phone wallet if the airline supports it.
- Save an offline PDF or other carrier-approved local copy.
- Keep the booking reference and operating-airline contact separately.
- Charge the phone before leaving and carry a permitted power bank in cabin baggage.
- Print the pass when the route is complicated, the airline asks for paper or the phone is unreliable.
- If the pass changes after a seat or flight update, replace every saved copy.
Do not depend on a cloud drive that asks for a login code inside the airport. Do not post a boarding-pass image publicly. Barcodes and booking details can expose personal travel information.
FTI-TTP, DigiYatra and an e-boarding pass are different things
These systems can appear in the same airport journey, but they do not do the same job.
FTI-TTP
The official Fast Track Immigration Trusted Traveller Programme uses registered identity and biometrics at immigration e-gates. Its current site says e-gates are available at fourteen named airports and can be used at arrivals and departures by enrolled eligible travelers. The process requires the passenger to scan a boarding pass and passport, then complete biometric authentication.
The September 1 announcement says enrolled travelers can use e-boarding passes at those e-gates. It does not enroll a traveler automatically. DigiYatra registration is not FTI-TTP registration.
DigiYatra
DigiYatra supports parts of the airport journey at participating locations. It is not immigration status, a visa or automatic access to an FTI-TTP e-gate. Follow the airport and DigiYatra instructions for terminal entry and security, then follow the separate immigration process for an international departure.
An ordinary e-boarding pass
An e-boarding pass is the airline-issued credential for the flight. Under the new rule, it can be shown at a staffed immigration counter even when the traveler is not using an FTI-TTP e-gate. The traveler still needs every document required for the journey.
Connections and transit passengers
The new rule does not decide whether a connecting passenger must clear Indian immigration. That depends on the itinerary, airport transfer, baggage arrangement, terminal change and visa position.
Ask the operating airlines these questions before departure:
- Are both flights on one ticket?
- Is baggage checked through to the final destination?
- Are both flights inside the international transit area?
- Must the passenger change terminals or collect a boarding pass landside?
- Does the nationality and itinerary require an Indian transit visa?
If you must enter India, collect baggage or leave the secure transit area, the immigration and visa decision is separate from whether a phone can display a boarding pass. Save both flight passes and the connection map offline.
Does this make airport queues shorter?
Removing a manual stamp can remove one action at the counter. No official source reviewed for this article published a guaranteed time saving or a universal queue target.
Queue length still depends on passenger volume, staffing, document problems, e-gate availability and the number of travelers sent for further checks. Use the airline's arrival time, not an article's invented shortcut. An e-pass does not justify arriving late for check-in, baggage drop, security or boarding.
Apps and offline preparation for an Indian departure
Prepare the smallest useful set rather than filling the phone with overlapping travel apps.

Can I show my boarding pass on my phone at Indian immigration?

Do I still need to print a boarding pass in India?
