IndiGo fuel charges rise on October 6: what travelers pay

IndiGo is raising the fuel charge included in new domestic and international bookings from 00:01 on October 6, 2026. The new amount is INR 375 to INR 1,300 for each domestic sector and INR 1,000 to INR 10,000 for each international sector, depending on distance or region.

The change applies to new bookings, not travel dates. A ticket bought before the cutoff keeps its completed booking price, but changing or rebooking it can bring the current fare and charges into the new calculation. IndiGo's announcement gives the cutoff time without naming a time zone, so anyone booking near midnight should rely on the final fare breakdown shown at checkout.

The practical answer: compare the final payable fare, not only the base fare. The fuel charge is one part of the ticket price, is applied by sector, and can sit alongside taxes, airport charges, convenience fees and optional extras.

New IndiGo domestic fuel charges

IndiGo's October 5 fuel-charge announcement sets five distance bands for domestic travel. Every band is higher than the rates introduced on April 2.

Domestic route distanceFrom October 6Previous April rateIncrease per sector
0 to 500 kmINR 375INR 275INR 100
501 to 1,000 kmINR 600INR 400INR 200
1,001 to 1,500 kmINR 900INR 600INR 300
1,501 to 2,000 kmINR 1,150INR 800INR 350
Above 2,000 kmINR 1,300INR 950INR 350

These are distance bands, not a city-pair list. Check the fare summary for the flight you are actually buying rather than estimating a straight-line distance and treating it as the airline's billing distance.

For one passenger on a nonstop return trip, there are normally two sectors, so the fuel-charge component is normally counted twice. A domestic return in the 1,001 to 1,500 km band would therefore show INR 1,800 in fuel charges before considering the base fare, taxes and other fees.

New IndiGo international fuel charges

International charges now use a mix of region and distance. The October table also changes some of the April groupings, so not every route has a simple like-for-like comparison.

International route groupFuel charge from October 6
SAARC region, up to 500 kmINR 1,000
SAARC region, 501 km and aboveINR 3,000
Southeast AsiaINR 5,500
GCC and Middle EastINR 5,500
North and East AsiaINR 5,500
AfricaINR 6,000
EuropeINR 10,000

The April structure charged INR 900 or INR 2,500 for Indian-subcontinent routes, depending on distance. It split GCC and Middle East routes at 2,000 km into INR 3,000 and INR 5,000 bands, while Southeast Asia and China used INR 3,500 and INR 5,000 bands. Africa was INR 5,000. Greece and Turkey were INR 7,500, while the UK and the rest of Europe were INR 10,000.

Because October uses SAARC instead of the broader Indian-subcontinent label and combines other regions differently, use the new table for a fresh booking. Do not assume an April category still maps to the same destinations.

Existing bookings should keep their completed price

IndiGo's conditions of carriage say a purchased tariff does not change after a booking is completed. They also say fuel charges can vary by sector, booking date and travel date.

That means the October revision should not be added later to an unchanged completed booking. The important exception is a voluntary change or rebooking. IndiGo says a revised tariff can apply when a customer changes a booking, so the new flight price and current charge structure may be used.

If a payment is pending or a booking is only on hold near the cutoff, confirm that a ticket has actually been issued. A search result, saved itinerary or held fare is not necessarily a completed booking.

The fuel charge is not the whole fare increase

IndiGo said it changed the rates after the latest month-on-month rise in aviation turbine fuel costs exceeded 14 percent. That explains the airline's decision, but the listed fuel charge still does not predict the exact movement in the final ticket price.

Base fares change with inventory. Taxes, airport charges, a payment-channel convenience fee and optional baggage or seat purchases can also affect the total. IndiGo's payment guidance lists separate convenience and assisted-booking fees. Compare the final total for the same passenger, date, fare type and extras across the channels you are considering.

Check these items before paying

  • Expand the fare summary and find the fuel-charge line.
  • Count every flight sector, including connections.
  • Compare the final payable total, not just the base fare.
  • Confirm whether the displayed currency is INR or a converted amount.
  • Save the issued ticket and invoice after payment.
  • If changing a ticket, compare the quoted change cost with a fresh booking while accounting for the cancellation outcome.
  • Read the purchased fare's baggage, change and cancellation rules before adding extras.

Mobile data after landing in India

The new airline charge does not include mobile service. For maps, ride booking, airline messages and accommodation contact after landing, travelers can compare the OpenSim India eSIM. The live catalog was checked on October 5 and had fixed and daily-data options from USD 0.82, with allowance, validity and top-up status varying by plan.

An eSIM supplies ground mobile data on a compatible unlocked device. It does not work as inflight Wi-Fi, reduce an airline fee, change a ticket or guarantee access to a local app. Check the selected plan's current details before payment.

Ten questions about IndiGo's October fuel charges

When do IndiGo's new fuel charges start?

They apply to new bookings made after 00:01 on October 6, 2026. The airline's announcement does not state a time zone, so the checkout fare is the safest reference close to the cutoff.

Do the new charges apply to tickets already booked?

An unchanged completed booking should keep its purchased tariff. IndiGo's conditions say the tariff does not change after completion, although a changed or rebooked itinerary can use the revised tariff.

Is the fuel charge applied once per booking or per flight?

It is applied per sector. A nonstop one-way trip has one sector, a nonstop return normally has two, and a connecting itinerary can have more.

How much is the fuel charge on an IndiGo domestic flight?

It ranges from INR 375 to INR 1,300 per sector. The amount depends on which of the airline's five distance bands covers the route.

How much is the fuel charge on an IndiGo international flight?

It ranges from INR 1,000 for a SAARC sector up to 500 km to INR 10,000 for Europe. The applicable region and, for SAARC routes, distance determine the amount.

Does an IndiGo return ticket pay the charge twice?

Normally, yes. A nonstop return has an outbound and an inbound sector. Connections add sectors, so inspect the complete fare breakdown before paying.

Will changing an older ticket trigger the new fuel charge?

It can. IndiGo says a revised tariff may apply to a changed booking. Ask for the full change quote, including fare difference and fees, before confirming the change.

Is the fuel charge the same as the convenience fee?

No. The fuel charge is part of the airline's route-based tariff calculation. Convenience and booking-channel fees are separate items, and taxes or optional extras can also appear.

Can I get the fuel charge refunded if I cancel?

The outcome depends on the fare rules, cancellation timing and total amount paid. IndiGo's cancellation limits can be expressed against the base fare plus fuel charge, so use the airline's live cancellation quote rather than assuming the entire fuel charge will return.

Could IndiGo change the fuel charge again?

Yes. IndiGo says it will monitor the situation and make adjustments when appropriate. Recheck the fare breakdown whenever you make a new booking or alter an existing one.

How we checked the new rates

IndiGo's October 5 release supports the new domestic and international tables and the October 6 booking cutoff. Its April 1 release supports the previous comparison rates. The airline's current conditions of carriage support the completed-booking and rebooking distinction, while its payment and ticket-modification pages support the separate-fee and cancellation cautions.

This guide was checked on October 5, 2026. It should be updated if IndiGo publishes another rate table, changes the affected booking cutoff, or revises how the charge is shown or treated after a booking change.
