Istanbul Marathon 2026: expo, start ferries and closures

The Istanbul Marathon takes place on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Registered 42K and 15.5K runners should collect their kits at the Yenikapi expo by 6pm on Saturday, October 31, then plan an early crossing to the Asian-side start. The two races finish in different places, so agree a meeting point with companions before separating.
The public run is a separate event and is already full. Its bib-collection period ended on October 28. Do not arrive expecting to register on Sunday or use the marathon ferries for a casual bridge walk.
All times below are Istanbul local time. The practical task this weekend is getting to the correct pier, start entrance and finish area, rather than relying on a route saved for an earlier edition.
Collect your race kit in Yenikapi, not at last year's location
The official Marathon and Sports Expo page lists Dr. Mimar Kadir Topbas Show and Art Center in Yenikapi for 42K and 15.5K kit collection.
| Collection day | Published hours | Planning consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday, October 29 | 10am-7pm | Already past when this guide was published |
| Friday, October 30 | 10am-7pm | Collect today if your arrival allows |
| Saturday, October 31 | 10am-6pm | Final listed collection window; do not plan a late-evening visit |
Check the venue name in your map rather than searching only for "marathon expo." Older discussions mention other collection locations. They are not the instructions for this weekend.
Keep your registration confirmation and the identification requested in your runner instructions available. If someone else is collecting for you, obtain the organizer's current authorization requirements first. Do not assume that a screenshot of your confirmation gives another person collection rights.
Before leaving the expo, confirm your assigned start, the correct baggage vehicle and the actual bag handover deadline. Resolve a missing bib or registration discrepancy with staff there rather than leaving it until the start entrance.
Choose the transfer for your registered category
The race-day programme publishes early transfers for 42K and 15.5K athletes:
| Option | Published departure window | What you still need to allow for |
|---|---|---|
| Ferries from Kabatas and Eminonu | 6.45am-7.45am | Reaching the correct pier, boarding and onward access to your corral |
| Ring services between Uskudar Marmaray and Beylerbeyi | 7am-8am | Your journey to Uskudar and the final approach after the shuttle |
The 42K runner instructions say there are no direct athlete buses from Taksim or Sultanahmet. A hotel in one of those areas does not remove the need to reach a designated transfer point.
Choose the earlier practical connection. A 7.45am final ferry window is not a recommendation to arrive at the pier at 7.44am, and a 9am race start is not permission to cross the city at 8.30am. Boarding, walking and security still take time.
The organizer distinguishes these transfers from public-run and corporate arrangements. Companions should not assume they can board an athlete service. The corporate-run instructions explicitly reserve the special ferry and Uskudar ring services for the 42K and 15.5K categories.
Match your start wave to the correct finish
Both main races cross from Asia to Europe, but they do not share a finish. The official course page provides separate maps; save the map for the distance on your bib.
| Registered distance | Scheduled start | Finish area |
|---|---|---|
| 42K marathon | 9am | Sultanahmet, at the Blue Mosque square |
| 15.5K | Waves at 9.19am, 9.38am and 10.05am | Yenikapi coast |
Use your assigned wave and corral. The later 15.5K start is not an alternative wave you can select because a ferry was missed. The 15.5K instructions describe the separate Yenikapi finish arrangements.
For a family following a runner, write the distance beside the meeting point in your shared message. "Meet at the finish" is not enough when one person is heading for Sultanahmet and another expects Yenikapi.
Choose a recognisable place outside the controlled finish area and a second time to meet if messages fail. Avoid a plan that depends on walking across the live course to the opposite pavement.
The public run is full and has different access rules
The organizer's Halk Kosusu page states that public-run registration is full and bib collection ended at 5pm on October 28. It is not a walk-up sightseeing opportunity.
For people already registered with a collected bib, the published public-run buses leave Mecidiyekoy between 9.15am and 10.15am. Access through Altunizade is listed until noon, with the public run scheduled to start at 12.14pm. Follow that category's instructions rather than the early 42K ferry plan.
The public-run age threshold is 14. That does not mean every race has the same age rule: the 42K and 15.5K categories have their own eligibility requirements. A family without valid entries should plan to watch from permitted public areas instead of trying to join the bridge crossing.
Road closures affect visitors who are not running
The published programme schedules these traffic restrictions for November 1:
| Road or route | Planned closure | Planned reopening |
|---|---|---|
| 15 July Martyrs Bridge | 3am | 2pm |
| Full course, including Eurasia Tunnel | 6am | Tunnel at 3pm; full course at 3.30pm |
Treat reopening times as the organizer's plan, not a guaranteed taxi pickup time. Follow police instructions and current transport notices on the day.
The course crosses central waterfront areas, so a short-looking drive on a normal map can be unsuitable during the race. If you have a Sunday airport transfer, ask your hotel or operator to check the actual pickup street and available route. Tell them about the closure window; do not rely on a usual Sunday driving estimate.
A road closure does not mean every rail service is closed. Equally, a rail station appearing near your destination does not prove every exit or connecting bus will operate normally. Check the current operator notices and leave room for a different final walking approach.
Keep spectators' fares and access separate from runner benefits
Carry your bib as instructed if using an eligible runner transport benefit. Do not extend that benefit to a companion or assume every operator participates. The organizer specifically excludes Marmaray from its free transport arrangement, so budget for that journey.
Spectators should choose a permitted viewing area on the official course, then stay on that side until staff allow a crossing. A route map identifies the course; it does not reserve a viewing space or authorize a spectator to enter a runner-only zone.
If you hope to hand a bottle to someone, check the organizer's rules rather than promising a handover at a barrier. For most companions, a clear post-finish plan is more dependable than trying to follow the runner by car.
Confirm bag drop, weather and support details before Sunday
The runner pages still leave some baggage timing details to be announced. The programme's vehicle-departure time is not necessarily your personal bag handover cutoff, particularly when the marathon has already started. Ask for the bag-drop cutoff at the expo and follow the instructions supplied with your bib.
Use the designated bag and number identification as directed. Keep essential identification, money and your phone with you rather than assuming valuables will be looked after in a general baggage vehicle. Arrange how you will contact your companion after collecting your belongings.
Check a current weather forecast on Saturday and again before leaving on Sunday. The bridge crossing and waterfront waiting areas are outdoors. A previous runner's description of a warm or wet race does not establish this year's conditions.
Questions about pacers, drinks, gels, clothing donation and medical provision belong with the organizer's current runner information or expo staff. Do not base a personal race plan on an undated comment about what was available in 2025. Anyone needing accessible transfer or viewing arrangements should request the specific boarding and entrance details before setting out.
Save the route and arrange mobile data before arrival
Keep the official course map, your bib details, hotel address and agreed meeting point saved on the phone. A downloaded map is useful if the connection drops, but it does not provide live closure notices or deliver a message to your family.
Use the organizer's website for race instructions and official transport information for service changes. Save the original Turkish place names alongside any translated notes so a station sign or pier name remains recognisable. Do not assume a generic running app provides official live tracking for this race.
Turkey needs an extra setup check. UK government travel advice says access to some eSIM services is restricted and advises checking with the provider before travelling. Read the Turkey eSIM restrictions guide, confirm current support for your plan and save installation instructions before departure. Do not depend on reaching a provider's website from Turkey to buy or manage data at the last minute.
For a short trip without a suitable home roaming allowance, OpenSim Turkey plans let you choose a small fixed allowance rather than buying a larger daily package only for maps and messages. The public catalog checked on October 30 lists 1 GB for 7 days at USD 0.92 and 3 GB for 15 days at USD 2.78, both marked eligible for top-up. Those are different allowances and durations, not an equal-use price comparison with another provider.
Top-up eligibility does not guarantee account access from inside Turkey, priority at a crowded finish or a local phone number. If your existing plan already includes enough usable Turkey roaming, you may not need another purchase. Estimate your use with the travel data calculator, check phone compatibility and review installation timing before choosing.
Before leaving the hotel
- Confirm your registered distance, wave, bib and start-transfer point.
- Keep the correct finish location in your companion's phone as well as yours.
- Carry the payment method needed for journeys outside any runner benefit.
- Save the course and important addresses offline, with enough battery for the return.
- Check the organizer's latest notices before treating a saved timetable as final.
If you are adding sightseeing days with children, use the separate Turkey with kids guide for the wider trip. Keep race morning focused on reaching the start and finding each other afterward.
