Lufthansa Economy Basic Europe: baggage rules and fees

Lufthansa Group has expanded Economy Basic to flights across its European network. The fare can be booked from October 6, 2026 for travel from October 27. It includes one small personal item, but no standard cabin suitcase.

That last detail is easy to miss when comparing the first price on a results page. A cabin bag, checked bag and seat reservation are optional purchases. The right comparison is therefore the total for the trip after adding everything the traveler actually needs.

The practical answer: Economy Basic works best for a short trip that fits inside one 40 x 30 x 15 cm personal item. If a cabin suitcase is needed, price the add-on before paying and compare that total with Economy Light. Check the issued itinerary too, because through fares connecting to an intercontinental flight and some trips originating in Italy follow different rules.

This guide was reviewed on October 6, 2026, when the expanded fare became bookable.

What Economy Basic includes

Lufthansa Group's European fare table lists one personal item measuring no more than 40 x 30 x 15 cm. It should fit beneath the seat. A standard cabin bag up to 8 kg is not included, and neither is a checked bag or advance seat reservation.

The airline lists Economy Basic as non-rebookable and non-refundable. Optional services bought with it are also non-refundable under the published fare page. If plans are uncertain, compare the restrictions as carefully as the baggage price.

The group says the fare applies across the European networks of Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS, Air Dolomiti and Discover Airlines. It is available on the airlines' websites and through direct NDC distribution. The precise fare name, allowance and operating airline should still appear in the booking before payment.

Dates and itinerary exceptions

The expanded fare is bookable from October 6, 2026 for departures from October 27, 2026. Those are different dates: an October 10 booking for an October 20 flight should not be assumed to use the new network-wide rules.

Lufthansa says its European fares also cover routes to Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey. The category is broader than the European Union, so check the arrival country's entry and mobile coverage separately.

There are two important itinerary boundaries:

  • The European fare table does not apply when a European segment is part of a through fare connecting to or from an intercontinental flight.
  • Economy Basic is not offered on journeys that originate in Italy and use Lufthansa Group flights from Rome Fiumicino to Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna or Brussels. Lufthansa describes this as applying to both one-way and return travel that starts in Italy.

A codeshare can add another layer. Read the operating carrier and baggage line for every segment rather than relying only on the Lufthansa flight number or the first fare label shown.

Adding a cabin bag

One cabin bag measuring up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm and weighing up to 8 kg can be bought for Economy Basic. Lufthansa's current page says prices start at €15 and vary by route and purchase point.

The group fare table says the add-on is available through airline websites and apps, travel agencies and service centers. Lufthansa's passenger page adds a stricter practical deadline: buy it online up to two hours before departure, because it cannot be purchased at the airport for a Lufthansa-operated flight. Partner-airline channels may differ, so use the operating carrier's checkout.

Do not assume that buying two flight sectors means one add-on covers the entire return. Lufthansa's baggage rules treat the outbound and return as separate routes, even if a route includes a connection. Confirm what the basket covers before paying.

What happens at the gate

Lufthansa says a bag that exceeds the booked allowance may be checked at the gate for a higher charge. Its current published range is €60 to €110, CHF60 to CHF110, or USD75 to USD125, with credit card payment only. The exact charge depends on the route and bag.

Even a compliant cabin bag can be placed in the hold without charge when a flight is busy. Remove travel documents, medication, valuables, power banks and other battery-powered devices before handing it over.

The safest approach is to measure a packed bag at home, including handles and bulging pockets. A soft backpack is not automatically a personal item if its filled dimensions exceed 40 x 30 x 15 cm.

Status, children and special baggage

HON Circle members, Senators and Star Alliance Gold members may take one additional 8 kg cabin bag on Economy Basic when the eligible frequent-flyer number is in the booking. Lufthansa notes a narrower partner rule on Discover Airlines: only United MileagePlus Premier Gold and Air Canada Aeroplan 50K members receive the comparable allowance there.

Children aged two and older receive the same fare-based allowance as an adult. Lufthansa's baggage page says the usual infant checked-bag allowance does not apply to Economy Basic. One eligible stroller or similar child item can still be transported free under the airline's child-baggage rules, but parents should verify the item and handling conditions for their operating carrier.

Sports equipment is not included free with Economy Basic. A musical instrument must fit the personal-item limit or a separately purchased cabin-bag allowance, subject to Lufthansa's size and weight rules. Oversized or specialist equipment should be declared before travel.

Basic versus Light

Economy Light includes the personal item plus one 8 kg cabin bag. Lufthansa currently describes it as non-refundable but rebookable for a €100 fee, while Basic is neither refundable nor rebookable. Other fare conditions can vary by airline and market.

Compare these amounts before choosing:

  1. the Basic fare for every traveler;
  2. a cabin-bag add-on for each route that needs one;
  3. any checked bag and seat reservation;
  4. the value of Light's rebooking option;
  5. the gate-fee risk if the personal item is close to the limit.

Basic can be combined with Light, Comfort or Flex on another direction, but Lufthansa says it cannot be combined with the Green fare. Mixed fares make it especially important to check each direction separately.

Mobile data for a European trip

OpenSim's live catalog includes Europe eSIM plans, a Europe and Morocco option, and Germany eSIM plans. Check the country list on the selected plan rather than treating the airline's European route map as an eSIM coverage map. Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Tunisia, for example, need their own product check.

Mobile data can help with airline messages, online add-ons and ground transport after arrival. It does not provide inflight Wi-Fi, change a baggage allowance or guarantee that an airline app will remain available during an airport disruption.

Compare the plan's data allowance, validity, supported networks, speed behavior, hotspot terms and top-up eligibility. Some packages can be topped up and others cannot. Before purchase, check whether the phone supports eSIM and use the travel data calculator to estimate likely use.

Ten questions about Lufthansa Economy Basic in Europe

When does Lufthansa Economy Basic start across Europe?

The expanded fare became bookable on October 6, 2026 for travel from October 27, 2026. Check the fare name and allowance in the booking because an earlier departure does not automatically follow the new network-wide offer.

What bag is included with Economy Basic?

One personal item up to 40 x 30 x 15 cm is included. It must fit beneath the seat. A normal cabin suitcase and checked bag cost extra unless a documented status benefit applies.

Can I buy an 8 kg cabin bag later?

Yes. Lufthansa sells one cabin bag up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm and 8 kg for Basic fares. For a Lufthansa-operated flight, buy it online no later than two hours before departure rather than waiting for the airport.

How much does the cabin-bag add-on cost?

Lufthansa lists prices from €15, but the actual amount depends on route and purchase channel. Price it for both directions before comparing Basic with Light.

What is the charge for an oversized bag at the gate?

Lufthansa publishes a range of €60 to €110, CHF60 to CHF110, or USD75 to USD125. Payment is by credit card, and the bag is placed in the hold. The applicable amount depends on the itinerary and bag.

Do Star Alliance Gold members get a cabin bag?

HON Circle, Senator and Star Alliance Gold members receive one additional 8 kg cabin bag when the eligible number is recorded. Discover Airlines limits its published partner exception to United Premier Gold and Air Canada Aeroplan 50K members, so confirm the operating airline.

Can I change or refund an Economy Basic ticket?

The published fare is non-rebookable and non-refundable. Optional services bought with it are also non-refundable. Read the checkout terms for taxes, airline cancellations and any rights that apply by law.

Does Economy Basic apply to an intercontinental connection?

Not under the European fare table when the short flight is part of a through fare connecting to or from an intercontinental journey. Read the allowance on the issued ticket instead of applying the standalone Europe rule.

Is Economy Basic always available from Rome?

No. Lufthansa lists an exception for trips originating in Italy on group flights from Rome Fiumicino to Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna or Brussels. The exception covers one-way and return travel that starts in Italy.

Is Basic cheaper than Economy Light after adding a bag?

Not necessarily. Add the Basic fare, cabin bag, checked bag and seat costs for the whole trip, then compare that total with Light. Light already includes an 8 kg cabin bag and has different change terms.

Before booking

  • Check that every travel date is October 27, 2026 or later.
  • Confirm the fare name and operating airline for each segment.
  • Measure the packed personal item, not the empty bag.
  • Add cabin and checked bags before comparing the total with Light.
  • Check both directions when fares or baggage differ.
  • Verify whether an Italy-origin or intercontinental exception applies.
  • Add an eligible frequent-flyer number before travel.
  • Save the baggage receipt and issued allowance offline.
  • Recheck the operating airline's rules before departure.

Fare sources and update triggers

Lufthansa Group's European fare table controls the rollout dates, participating airlines, allowance, route scope and principal exceptions. Lufthansa's passenger baggage pages control the current dimensions, purchase channels, airport restriction, gate fees, status benefit and family guidance.

Public traveler discussions were used to identify recurring questions about bag measurement, enforcement, status, mixed carriers and the total cost of Basic versus Light. They were not used as evidence for an airline rule.

Update this page if the group changes the rollout date, included item, dimensions, price floor, purchase deadline, gate-fee range, participating airline, status allowance, route exception, change terms or refund terms.
