Allow a full day. Book a licensed operator and confirm vessel, crossing time, forecast, child-size life jackets, shade, drinking water, toilets, food, snorkelling supervision and cancellation terms. Five, seven and ten days without racing the coast

Five days: Maputo and its province

Use day one for arrival. Spend one compact day on the museum, gardens, fortress, station and FEIMA, dropping stops when children tire. Give Maputo National Park a full day with a guide. Keep one weather and recovery day before departure.

Seven days: Maputo plus Inhambane and Tofo

Fly or arrange a suitable supported transfer rather than treating EN1 as a sightseeing day. Spend three nights around Inhambane and Tofo, with one town morning, one beach day and one buffer. Return before the international-flight day.

Ten days: Maputo plus Vilankulo and Bazaruto

Use three nights in Maputo and five around Vilankulo. Choose the Bazaruto day only when weather suits, leaving another day free to move it. Keep the last night near the international departure airport. Do not add Tofo or Ilha de Mozambique.

Airports, roads, boats and child restraints

Maputo and Vilankulo have airports. Domestic schedules can change, so keep a full buffer before an international flight. Confirm luggage limits, especially for small aircraft, and request help for a folded stroller in advance.

Self-driving gives flexibility but EN1 conditions, night driving, pedestrians, animals and limited recovery services raise the cost of a mistake. Avoid driving after dark. Chapas are not a practical choice when a child restraint and luggage control matter. A vetted driver is useful only when the vehicle, belt and seat are suitable.

The WHO 2023 Mozambique profile records a national seat-belt law covering front and rear occupants, a national child-restraint law, a front-seat restriction and an age threshold of 12. For boats, ask to see the child's life jacket before paying. It should fit the child, not merely be described as available. Weather, loading, shade, engine reliability, ladder access and the operator's emergency plan all matter.

• Malaria: Risk exists throughout Mozambique. Seek individual advice early, use nets and repellent, and cover skin around dusk.
• Cyclones and rain: The wet cyclone season can affect roads, flights, boats, power and water. Follow official alerts and accommodation instructions.
• Emergency care: Call 112. Serious illness or injury outside Maputo may require evacuation, so check the insurance wording.
• Water: Use sealed or appropriately treated water when uncertain, including for infant feeding and brushing teeth.
