Old Mutual adds Airalo eSIM access to travel insurance

Old Mutual Kenya announced on September 17, 2026 that it has integrated Airalo eSIM access into its travel insurance journey. Customers can choose a mobile-data plan, activate it digitally, monitor usage and manage eligible top-ups while traveling. The announcement says Airalo offers service in more than 200 countries and regions.
One detail remains unresolved: the public launch coverage does not say that mobile data is free, included in the insurance premium or available with every policy. It also does not publish plan prices, allowances, validity periods or a step-by-step redemption path.
The traveler takeaway: buy the insurance for its protection, not because the headline mentions an eSIM. Before payment, confirm whether the selected policy exposes the Airalo option, whether data costs extra, and which package terms apply to the exact destination. If the integration is unavailable or the offered plan does not fit, a separate travel eSIM remains an alternative.
What Old Mutual announced in Kisumu
Old Mutual unveiled the integration during its Kisumu Market Storm on September 17. Business Quest reported that the Airalo option sits inside the insurer's travel-insurance journey, allowing customers to select a plan, activate it and manage usage and top-ups abroad.
HapaKenya and Newsday Kenya reported the same core details. The announcement was paired with Motor-Rahisi, a separate product that lets eligible motorists spread comprehensive motor-insurance premiums across as many as three months. Motor-Rahisi is not part of the travel eSIM offer.
| Confirmed in the launch coverage | Not published in the open announcement |

| Airalo access is integrated with Old Mutual Travel Insurance | Whether an Airalo plan is included in the policy price |
| Customers can select and activate a data plan digitally | Which Old Mutual policies, channels or customers qualify |
| Usage and eligible top-ups can be managed while traveling | Package prices, data amounts and validity periods |
| Airalo is described as covering 200+ countries and regions | Exact operators, speeds and hotspot rules by destination |

Tech-ish highlighted the same unanswered price question. Until Old Mutual displays the eSIM terms during a quote or publishes a dedicated offer page, travelers should treat the integration as a convenient sales path, not as complimentary data.
The insurance and the data plan remain separate decisions
Old Mutual's current Kenya travel-insurance page describes worldwide cover for medical and other travel emergencies. It offers single-trip and annual choices, with options for business or leisure travel. The open page does not currently describe Airalo, list an included allowance or identify a policy tier that receives mobile data.
That makes the buying order important. First compare the insurance benefits, exclusions, excess, trip-length rules and claims process. Then compare the eSIM's destination coverage, allowance, validity, price and activation policy. A convenient checkout does not turn connectivity into insurance cover, and an eSIM failure is not automatically an insured loss.
Save the policy schedule and the eSIM order confirmation separately. Old Mutual should handle questions about the insurance contract. Airalo or the support route shown in the integrated journey should handle installation, package and network questions. If the checkout presents different instructions, follow the responsibilities stated there.
What the Airalo step should show before payment
Airalo's public store includes local, regional and global packages. Its help pages make clear that terms can differ by package. The integrated Old Mutual path should therefore show, at minimum:
- the countries and networks covered;
- the data allowance or the fair-use rule for an unlimited package;
- the validity period and the event that starts it;
- whether the plan is data-only or includes voice and SMS;
- whether hotspot use is permitted;
- whether the eSIM can be topped up;
- the retail price, currency and any taxes or fees;
- the refund and support route.
Do not rely on the phrase “more than 200 countries and regions” for a particular journey. A global provider can serve that many destinations while individual packages cover only one country or a smaller region. Airport connections and side trips need to appear on the selected package, not merely in Airalo's wider catalog.
When to buy, install and activate the eSIM
Airalo says travelers can usually install a profile before reaching the destination, but its installation and validity guidance warns that some packages begin at installation while many begin when the eSIM first connects to a supported network.
Read the selected package's validity policy before installing. Buy while the phone has reliable internet, save the installation instructions offline and avoid deleting the profile if setup looks incomplete. An eSIM may appear installed but remain inactive until it reaches its coverage area.
The phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. Check both conditions before buying insurance on the assumption that its integrated data option will work. Our eSIM compatibility guide covers the device check, while the installation-timing guide separates downloading a profile from starting a package.
Calls, SMS, WhatsApp and the home number
Airalo's calls and texts guidance says many plans are data-only, while packages labeled “Data, Voice & Text” include carrier calls and SMS. The Old Mutual launch coverage does not identify which plan type appears in the integration.
A data-only eSIM can still run WhatsApp, Signal, email, maps and other internet apps. It does not automatically provide a local number for hotel calls or bank verification texts. On a compatible dual-SIM phone, the Kenyan home line can often remain active for calls and SMS while the travel eSIM handles mobile data.
Turn off data roaming and automatic mobile-data switching on the home line. Receiving or answering calls, listening to voicemail, sending SMS or triggering a carrier travel pass may still cost money. Check the home operator's rules rather than assuming that selecting an eSIM blocks every roaming charge.
Top-ups are package-specific
The launch coverage says customers can manage top-ups, but not every Airalo product is rechargeable. Airalo's top-up instructions say the option appears only for rechargeable eSIMs. If there is no top-up button, the customer may need to buy another package or a new eSIM.
Before a long trip, note the remaining-data display, the top-up menu and the package expiry time. Do not wait until the last megabyte before checking. A top-up may need the existing profile to remain installed, and a payment or network problem is easier to solve on hotel Wi-Fi than during an airport transfer.
Old Mutual with Airalo or a separate Roaming eSIM?
The integration's main advantage is convenience. A customer already buying suitable Old Mutual travel cover may be able to arrange insurance and data in one journey. A separate Roaming eSIM has a different advantage: the traveler can inspect current route-specific plans without first buying an insurance policy.
| Traveler decision | Old Mutual with Airalo | Separate Roaming eSIM |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Through the Old Mutual Travel Insurance journey described in the launch | Direct purchase without an insurance policy |
| Insurance | Old Mutual supplies the separate travel-insurance product | No insurance is bundled with the data plan |
| Data price | Not published in the open launch coverage | Displayed on the selected live package card |
| Eligibility | Exact policy and channel rules are not yet public | Available to a customer with a compatible, unlocked device and supported payment method |
| Package detail | Must be checked inside the integrated journey | Allowance, validity, speed label, coverage and top-up status appear on current cards |
| Best fit | A policy buyer who values a combined purchase path | A traveler who wants to compare data independently |
Roaming eSIM does not win every route on price, speed or coverage, and the Old Mutual integration may offer plans that fit some travelers better. Compare the same destination, allowance and validity period. The deciding factor should be the live package terms, not which service appears first in the insurance flow.
At 12:55 UTC on September 19, the public Roaming eSIM catalog returned these independent alternatives:
| Trip shape | Current route | Live catalog result |
|---|---|---|
| Travel within supported African destinations | Africa eSIM plans | Three packages, starting at USD11.40 |
| A multi-country European trip | Europe eSIM plans | 11 packages, starting at USD3.20 |
| A trip to the United Arab Emirates | United Arab Emirates eSIM plans | 19 packages, starting at USD0.60 |
| A wider multi-region itinerary | Global 120+ eSIM plans | Nine packages, starting at USD8.90 |
Prices and inventory can change. Open the selected card and check its complete country list, allowance, validity, activation rule, speed label, fair-use terms and top-up status before checkout.
Questions travelers are asking about the Old Mutual Airalo eSIM
Is the Airalo eSIM free with Old Mutual travel insurance?
That is not confirmed. The public launch coverage says Airalo functionality is integrated into the insurance journey, but it does not say that a data package is complimentary or included in the premium. Check the quote and final checkout total.
Which Old Mutual policies include the Airalo option?
Old Mutual has not published a qualifying-policy list on its open Kenya travel-insurance page. Confirm the option appears for the chosen single-trip or annual policy and purchase channel before paying.
Is the integration available only to customers in Kenya?
The September 17 launch was announced by Old Mutual Kenya in Kisumu, and the reviewed public product page is the Kenyan insurer's site. Customers elsewhere should check their local Old Mutual business rather than assume the same journey is available.
Which countries does the eSIM cover?
Airalo says its wider store serves more than 200 countries and regions, but each package has its own coverage. Check every destination, airport connection and side trip on the selected plan.
Does the Old Mutual Airalo option include calls, SMS or a phone number?
The launch announcement does not say. Airalo sells both data-only plans and some plans with voice and SMS. Read the plan type before purchase; WhatsApp calling over data is not the same as carrier voice service.
Can I keep my Kenyan number active for OTP messages?
Often yes on a compatible dual-SIM phone. Keep the home line enabled, use the travel eSIM for mobile data and disable data roaming on the home line. Incoming SMS availability and charges remain subject to the Kenyan carrier's rules.
When should I install the Airalo eSIM?
Install on stable internet after checking the package's validity policy. Many plans begin when they first connect in the destination, while some begin at installation. Do not assume one timing rule applies to every package.
Can every Airalo eSIM be topped up?
No. Airalo says only rechargeable eSIMs show a top-up option. If the selected plan is not rechargeable, the traveler may need a new package or profile.
What happens if the eSIM does not work abroad?
Use Wi-Fi to check that the profile is installed, selected for mobile data, allowed to use data roaming and connected to a supported network. Save both the insurance and eSIM confirmations, then contact the support route identified for the failed product.
Is Old Mutual with Airalo better than buying a separate eSIM?
It is more convenient if the policy is already the right insurance choice and the integrated plan fits the itinerary. A separate eSIM is easier to compare independently. Judge the live price, allowance, validity, coverage and support terms for the same trip.
Final checks before using the integrated offer
Start with the insurance. Confirm the policy territory, dates, medical limits, exclusions, excess, cancellation terms and claims process. Then inspect the eSIM package as a separate purchase decision.
Make sure the phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible, confirm whether the plan is data-only, and save its coverage, activation and top-up rules. Download maps, bookings, policy documents and support contacts before departure. If the first airport transfer depends on mobile data, keep a backup that does not depend on the same account or device.
Sources reviewed and update triggers
This guide uses six Kenyan launch reports, Old Mutual Kenya's live travel-insurance page, Airalo's current store and help documentation, public traveler discussions and Roaming eSIM's read-only catalog. Community posts were used to identify practical questions, not to establish launch facts or package terms.
We will update the page when Old Mutual publishes eligibility, pricing, an included allowance, a dedicated redemption path or support responsibilities, or when Airalo terms materially change the traveler decision. The policy schedule and live package screen remain authoritative at purchase time.
