Open House New York 2026: dates, tickets and planning

Open House New York Weekend runs Friday, October 16 through Sunday, October 18, 2026. More than 300 destinations across all five boroughs will offer tours, talks and access to places that are normally difficult to enter. The public lineup will be released on September 25, and tickets for capacity-limited sites will be released through Eventbrite at 12 p.m. ET on October 2.

The most useful thing to know is that OHNY Weekend is not one giant ticketed attraction. Most participating sites use a Drop-In format, which means you can arrive during the listed hours without a reservation. Only certain sites and tours require tickets because of space or security limits. A good weekend does not depend on winning the fastest online checkout.

Open House New York 2026 dates and deadlines

The festival activity page currently lists general hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on all three days, but individual sites can use narrower windows. Treat the time on each site listing as the one that matters.

What is Open House New York Weekend?

OHNY Weekend is a citywide architecture and urban-design festival. It opens buildings, infrastructure, workshops, landscapes and cultural spaces for public visits. Some locations are usually closed to casual visitors; others are familiar places offering special tours or access during the weekend.

The organizer's current preview names the Flatiron Building at Dusk, the NYC Department of Transportation Sign Shop, Rockefeller Center Gardens and Brooklyn Army Terminal. Those examples show the range of the program, but they are not a complete itinerary. The full public listing, with dates and times, arrives September 25.

That timing matters. A guide that names a dozen supposed must-see sites before the full reveal risks sending visitors toward an old program. Start with the official lineup once it is public, then choose by access value and travel time rather than fame alone.

Do you need tickets for OHNY Weekend?

You need a ticket only when the individual listing says it is ticketed. The organizer separates the program into two practical groups:

• Drop-In sites: arrive during the published open hours. No reservation is required.
• Ticketed sites or tours: access is limited to ticket holders because of capacity or security requirements.

Ticketed sessions will be released through Eventbrite on October 2 at noon ET. Do not assume that an old lottery process, a previous year's price, or a past ticket limit applies in 2026. The current visitor page names Eventbrite and the release time, but its public text does not yet expose every answer about price, quantity, waitlists, child tickets or transfers.

Before release day, open the current OHNY visitor information page and each saved listing. Read the site's access notes and follow its own Eventbrite link. If the organizer publishes a 2026 ticket tip sheet or master list, use that version rather than a search result from 2025.

How to prepare for the October 2 ticket release

Trying to reserve every interesting tour produces an impossible route. Prepare a ranked list instead.

1. Choose no more than three high-priority ticketed sessions.
2. Record each start time, expected duration and borough.
3. Remove combinations that require an unrealistic cross-city transfer.
4. Open the official listing and Eventbrite account before noon ET.
5. Keep one backup session that does not overlap your first choice.
6. Build the rest of the day from nearby Drop-In sites after the ticket result is known.

If you are traveling with other people, agree on the priority order before release time. A group that tries to discuss choices while sessions are opening will lose time. Do not claim overlapping reservations simply because both are available. Unused capacity matters at small sites, and the organizer's current FAQ asks ticket holders who cannot attend to follow its transfer guidance.

What if ticketed tours sell out?

A sold-out ticketed tour does not make OHNY Weekend a failed trip. The organizer says most locations are Drop-In, and its current Passport page estimates about 150 Drop-In destinations. That is enough to plan an entire weekend without a reserved tour.

Use the public lineup filters to find Drop-In sites in one area. Then check each listing for:

• exact open hours;
• last admission or line cutoff, if stated;
• expected visit length;
• child policy;
• step-free access and other services;
• photography rules;
• weather dependence;
• the nearest subway or bus stop.

Lines can still form at Drop-In sites. Put the location you care about most first, then keep two nearby alternatives. An optional OHNY Weekend Passport offers expedited access for the holder and one guest at sites that do not require tickets, but it does not replace a ticket at a ticketed site. The current mailing deadline is October 8.

How to build a realistic OHNY Weekend itinerary

New York's map makes distant places look deceptively close. A route from northern Manhattan to eastern Queens and then Sunset Park can consume the day even when every train runs correctly. Plan by neighborhood cluster.

Start with two or three anchors per day

An anchor is a site you would be disappointed to miss. Choose two or three, not eight. Add optional nearby visits only after accounting for queues, stairs, security checks, meals and the walk from transit.

For a ticketed tour, protect the arrival time with a generous buffer. For a Drop-In site, check whether the line closes before the listed end time. A 5 p.m. closing time does not necessarily mean a visitor joining at 4:59 p.m. will enter.

Keep Friday different from the weekend

Friday can be useful for sites with weekday access and for visitors who prefer smaller crowds. Saturday generally offers the largest choice but can produce the most competition and transit pressure. Sunday works well for a tighter neighborhood plan and any priority saved for the final day.

Wait for the September 25 schedule before assigning particular sites to those patterns. The program changes from year to year.

Use a borough-first route

After the lineup is public, group saved places into practical clusters such as:

• Lower Manhattan and nearby Brooklyn waterfront areas;
• Midtown and the Upper East or Upper West Side;
• Long Island City and western Queens;
• Downtown Brooklyn, Sunset Park and the Brooklyn waterfront;
• one Bronx, Staten Island or deeper Queens cluster that deserves its own travel block.

The exact combinations depend on the 2026 listings. A direct subway ride can be quicker than two locations that are geographically close but poorly connected.

Leave one open block

Keep at least 90 minutes unassigned each day. Use it for a longer queue, a meal, a delayed train or a Drop-In site found after the program launches. A minute-by-minute spreadsheet may look efficient but collapses when the first tour runs late.

Sample one-day and three-day plans

These templates deliberately avoid naming unconfirmed sites. Fill them after the public reveal.

One day

• Morning: one priority Drop-In site near opening time.
• Midday: one ticketed session or second anchor in the same area.
• Afternoon: lunch and one nearby Drop-In alternative.
• Late afternoon: stop only if the listing and line still allow entry.

Three days

• Friday: one cluster with weekday-only or Friday-specific activity.
• Saturday: the strongest ticketed session, plus nearby Drop-In sites.
• Sunday: a different borough cluster with a simple return route.

This structure gives the festival room to be interesting. It also protects a visitor from spending more time changing trains than seeing buildings.

Getting around all five boroughs

The subway and bus network will be the practical backbone for most itineraries. The subway operates around the clock, but planned weekend work can change routes, platforms and journey times. Check the MTA service status and trip planner shortly before each journey.

For payment, the MTA's tap-and-ride system accepts a contactless bank card, phone, wearable or OMNY Card. Use the same card or device consistently if you want fare-capping benefits. Each traveler using a separate payment method will track their own cap. The MTA also warns that a newly used payment method cannot immediately be passed back for another rider on its first trip.

Do not assume the subway is always the fastest link. Buses can work well for cross-town or waterfront gaps, while ferries may help with certain clusters but require a separate route and fare check. Walking between two nearby sites can be simpler than descending into a station for one stop.

On October 16 to 18:

• check planned service changes before leaving your accommodation;
• save the route to the exact entrance, not just the street address;
• keep an accessible alternative when elevators matter;
• allow extra time for queues and security;
• avoid carrying large luggage unless a listing explicitly allows it.

Accessibility, children, photography and weather

There is no single festival-wide answer for every site. OHNY says individual listings identify wheelchair access, whether children are welcome and which accessibility services are available. The lineup can also be filtered by accessibility criteria.

Use those fields as a first screen, then contact the site or organizer when the visit depends on a specific accommodation. A building may be step-free at the entrance but still have a tour route, toilet or viewing level that needs clarification.

Child acceptance is also site-specific. A family-friendly collection does not mean every industrial or infrastructure tour accepts every age. Check whether each child needs a ticket once the 2026 ticket FAQ is fully published.

Photography and recording rules vary because the weekend includes private workplaces, collections and security-sensitive facilities. Ask before photographing people, equipment or restricted areas. Inclement-weather decisions also depend on the site. Outdoor visits may change while indoor programs continue.

Create one offline note with ticket confirmations, site addresses, opening windows and the route back to your accommodation. A screenshot is useful for reference, but it should not replace a live Eventbrite ticket when the current listing requires one.

Mobile data for an OHNY Weekend route

OHNY Weekend can involve changing addresses, Eventbrite tickets, live MTA service updates and messages between people following different routes. Mobile data is useful here because the itinerary is distributed across the city, not because the festival needs a special connectivity product.
