They support two active eSIMs and store eight or more profiles. The same three phones sold outside the United States retain one nano-SIM and eSIM.

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold is different. Google's specification lists one nano-SIM and eSIM in both the United States and the rest of the world.

The traveler answer: a US Pixel 11, 11 Pro or 11 Pro XL can keep a home eSIM active while a Roaming eSIM supplies travel data, if both providers support the setup and the phone is unlocked. If moving a plastic home SIM matters, buy the rest-of-world version or the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Check the exact model before paying because the name alone does not reveal the tray.

Pixel 11 eSIM and physical SIM options by model

Google's Pixel hardware specification provides the clearest launch-day answer. It separates the US models from the rest of the world and lists the Fold on its own.

Google's dual-SIM guidance adds that Pixel 7 and later phones can use two eSIM profiles at once when the carrier allows it. The hardware specification is still the better source for the exact Pixel 11 regional configuration.

This is not a worldwide change to physical SIMs. It is a US hardware choice for the three non-folding Pixel 11 models. A Canadian, British, European, Japanese or other rest-of-world listing should show nano-SIM plus eSIM, but verify the actual seller and model instead of relying on the delivery address or storefront language.

Buying a US Pixel 11 changes the backup plan abroad

A physical SIM can be moved to another phone without downloading a new profile. A US Pixel 11 owner gives up that option on the standard, Pro and Pro XL. If the phone is lost, damaged or sent for repair, moving the main number depends on the home carrier's eSIM process and access to a replacement device.

That does not make the US model a poor travel phone. Two active eSIMs can be a clean setup: keep the home number on one profile and use Roaming eSIM for data on the other. The tradeoff appears when a traveler depends on a destination where the preferred local carrier sells only a physical visitor SIM, or wants to move a line into a spare phone or router.

Importing a rest-of-world model only to regain the tray creates a different check. Google's specification lists different US and rest-of-world model numbers and radio bands. An unlocked import may connect, but a seller's compatibility claim is not proof that every home-carrier feature, 5G band or warranty route will work. Confirm the exact model with the carrier before buying an imported phone.

eSIM support does not prove that the phone is unlocked

The Pixel 11 can have the right eSIM hardware and still reject another provider. A carrier lock and eSIM compatibility are separate checks.

Google says phones bought directly from the Google Store are unlocked. A phone bought through a mobile carrier can remain locked until that carrier's conditions are met. Check Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM, but also ask the selling carrier to confirm that the device is unlocked for another provider. How to add Roaming eSIM to a Pixel 11 before travel

Google's current eSIM setup path is Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM. Use this order before a trip:

1. Confirm the exact Pixel 11 model and the country where it was sold.
2. Confirm that the phone is unlocked for another provider.
3. Choose a country plan for one destination or a regional plan that lists every stop. Use the country versus regional plan guide if the route crosses borders.
4. Install Roaming eSIM over reliable Wi-Fi. Keep the QR code or manual activation details visible on another screen if the selected plan uses them.
5. Label the profiles Home and Roaming eSIM. Select Roaming eSIM for mobile data.
6. Stop the home line from using mobile data. Keep it enabled only if calls, texts or verification messages are needed and the home-carrier charges are understood.

If Add SIM does nothing or QR activation fails, do not delete a working home profile. Update the phone, restart it, reconnect to stable Wi-Fi and confirm that the activation code has not already been consumed. Contact support with the exact error and order details before repeatedly scanning the code.

Move the main number before erasing the old phone

Google's eSIM transfer guidance says an existing plan may transfer during setup or later in Settings, depending on the carrier. If the automatic transfer is not detected, the carrier must activate the eSIM. Google also says the existing device or profile can continue working when a transfer attempt fails.

Use that safety margin. Test calls, texts and mobile data on the Pixel 11 before erasing or trading in the old phone. If the old device is already broken, recovery depends on the carrier's identity checks and replacement-profile process. A physical SIM from the old phone cannot be inserted into a US Pixel 11, 11 Pro or 11 Pro XL.

Dual SIM lets the Pixel keep two lines available, but it does not turn a data-only travel plan into a phone-number service. Google provides the phone, profile storage and SIM controls. It does not include destination mobile data with the handset.
