povo Shinkansen free data starts today: who qualifies
povo's new Shinkansen campaign begins September 18, 2026. An eligible povo2.0 user can receive unlimited mobile data for three hours after entering a participating JR East Shinkansen station with a correctly linked Suica and Shinkansen e-ticket.
The useful word is *eligible*. This is not free train Wi-Fi or a reward for every Shinkansen passenger. A paper ticket, staffed-gate entry, late Suica registration or journey outside the campaign rules can prevent the data from arriving.
The traveler decision: Use the offer only if you already have an active povo2.0 line and can complete the Suica and Eki-net setup before boarding. Short-term visitors should not build a trip around it until they have confirmed their povo2.0 eligibility. A Japan travel eSIM remains the simpler option when data must work independently of a particular rail ticket and gate tap.
What launched on September 18
KDDI, KDDI Digital Life and JR East announced the Shinkansen data campaign in August. It runs from the first train on September 18 through the last train on December 17, 2026, unless the organizers change or end it.
The reward is povo2.0's Unlimited Data for three hours. It applies to the eligible povo mobile line, not the train's Wi-Fi network. povo says the connection is best effort and may be controlled during congestion, video streaming or cloud gaming, so “unlimited” describes the data allowance rather than a guaranteed speed.
The offer can be triggered more than once, including on the same day, but reward periods do not overlap. If another unlimited-data topping is already active, the campaign reward does not extend it. The campaign data is used before a paid topping.
The setup has four separate checks
A successful trigger needs all four parts in place:
- An active povo2.0 account and line.
- An eligible Shinkansen e-ticket reserved through Eki-net.
- That reservation linked to Suica or Mobile Suica.
- The same Suica ID linked to the povo2.0 account at least 20 minutes before boarding.
The final step is a tap at an eligible Shinkansen automatic gate. The campaign instructions say a paper ticket or entry through a staffed gate does not trigger the reward. Linking the Suica ID after entering is also too late for that journey.
JR East says its Touch Trigger system can identify a gate tap and match it with Eki-net reservation information. According to JR East, the campaign partner receives an encrypted Suica identifier and encrypted email address, not the rider's name, birth date or phone number. Consent is required.
The three-hour clock does not begin at departure
povo says the reward should arrive automatically around five to ten minutes after the eligible gate tap. The three-hour period starts when the topping is applied to the povo account, not when the train departs or reaches cruising speed.
That matters for an early gate entry or a delayed train. Check the povo app before starting a large download. If the reward is missing, contact povo support. The campaign tells users not to ask station or train staff to resolve a mobile-account reward.
One more phone setting matters: select povo2.0 as the device's mobile-data line. A reward attached to povo cannot supply data while the phone is routing traffic through another SIM.
Eligible stations do not make every route eligible
The campaign uses 55 JR East Shinkansen stations, but eligibility depends on the direction and endpoints as well as the station tap. The official examples make the boundary unusually clear:

The exclusions reflect travel beyond JR East's eligible campaign area. Do not assume that every e-ticket on the Tohoku, Hokkaido, Akita, Yamagata, Joetsu or Hokuriku Shinkansen receives the reward. Check both stations and direction on the live campaign page before buying a ticket for the benefit.
This offer does not cover the Tokaido Shinkansen merely because it also uses the word Shinkansen. The official campaign is tied to participating JR East entry points and the listed journey rules.
Foreign visitors have a separate povo program
povo also markets a visitor-facing Japan SIM, but its station benefit is different. povo Data Oasis gives eligible Japan SIM users 0.5GB for 24 hours at participating locations, currently up to once a day and ten times per month. povo expanded that program to 83 stations in June.
The Japan SIM pages do not say that buying the visitor product makes a traveler eligible for the three-hour Shinkansen reward. The rail campaign calls for an active povo2.0 account and a linked Suica ID. Ordinary povo2.0 signup and identity requirements can also differ from the visitor service.
Welcome Suica Mobile can be used with a JR East e-ticket, but that is only the rail-ticket side of the process. The data campaign still requires the specific povo2.0 account link. Likewise, JR East's general e-ticket documentation mentions compatible IC cards such as PASMO, while the povo campaign specifies Suica. Do not substitute another card unless povo adds it to the campaign terms.
When a travel eSIM is the more predictable choice
The povo reward is attractive for an eligible existing customer because it can cover maps, messages and travel changes during a rail journey without using a paid allowance. It is less useful as a visitor's only connection because eligibility depends on account status, a linked ticket, a linked Suica, an automatic-gate tap and a qualifying direction.
A separate travel eSIM does not make the povo reward work and cannot improve cellular coverage in a tunnel. Its advantage is independence: the plan can serve the rest of the trip, including airport arrival, city travel and days without an eligible Shinkansen journey.
The live Roaming eSIM catalog showed 43 Japan plans, starting at USD 0.60, and 10 Asia 12 Areas plans, starting at USD 3.80, when checked on September 18. Prices and inventory can change, so use the current product card at checkout. Compare the allowance, validity, speed policy, hotspot terms and top-up status rather than choosing from the starting price alone.

Ten questions about povo's Shinkansen data offer
Who qualifies for the three-hour data reward?
An active povo2.0 user who meets the campaign's ticket, Suica, account-linking, station and gate-entry rules can qualify. Riding a participating train is not enough by itself.
Does a paper Shinkansen ticket work?
No. The campaign requires an eligible Shinkansen e-ticket linked to Suica and entry through an automatic gate. A paper ticket or staffed-gate entry does not trigger the reward.
Can I use PASMO instead of Suica?
Do not assume so. JR East's general e-ticket system accepts several compatible IC cards, but this data campaign specifically requires a Suica ID linked to povo2.0.
How early should I link Suica to povo2.0?
At least 20 minutes before boarding, according to the campaign rules. Linking it after entering the gate does not make that journey eligible.
When does the three-hour period start?
It starts when the Unlimited Data topping is applied to the povo account, normally around five to ten minutes after the eligible automatic-gate tap. It does not wait for the train's scheduled departure.
What should I do if the reward does not arrive?
Confirm the correct Suica ID, link timing, e-ticket, station, direction and automatic-gate entry, then contact povo support. Railway staff do not administer the mobile-data reward.
Can everyone on a group booking get the reward?
Each person would need an eligible individual setup, including the IC card tied to that passenger's e-ticket and the required povo2.0 link. The campaign allows one Suica ID per povo account, so do not expect one account or one card to cover the group.
Can I receive the reward more than once a day?
Yes, the campaign does not publish a total-use limit and says multiple same-day uses are possible. Reward periods cannot overlap, so a second trigger does not stack extra hours onto an active one.
Does the reward stack with another unlimited-data topping?
No. The campaign says unlimited periods do not overlap. Its data is used before a paid topping, but it does not extend another active unlimited-data period.
Is this the same as povo's visitor Japan SIM benefit?
No. The visitor-facing Data Oasis is a separate offer with 0.5GB valid for 24 hours at participating locations. The Shinkansen campaign gives three hours of unlimited data to eligible povo2.0 users after a qualifying rail entry.
