Rotterdam Centraal entrance and station sign in September 2015

No trains will run to, from or through Rotterdam Centraal on Saturday, November 7 and Sunday, November 8, 2026, according to NS. Replacement buses and metro journeys will be available, but international trains have separate changes. Check the full journey for your date before relying on a normal timetable or an old booking confirmation.

The main decision is whether you need to reach Rotterdam itself, connect with a flight, or board an international train elsewhere. Those are different problems. A replacement route that gets you into the city may not get you to your reserved departure in time.

Which Rotterdam routes are affected?

The NS Rotterdam engineering-work page lists the affected approaches toward Delft Campus, Gouda and Zwijndrecht, plus the high-speed line toward Breda and Schiphol Airport. It directs passengers to plan door-to-door shortly before travelling.

ProRail explains that signalling equipment is being renewed in stages and confirms the November 7-8 work. This is planned engineering work, not a nationwide public-transport strike. It also does not establish that every Rotterdam tram, metro station or bus is closed.

Use the address where you actually need to arrive when planning. Allow for the walk to replacement transport, boarding and any additional transfer. If travelling early or late, inspect those exact departures rather than assuming a daytime alternative runs all night.

Eurostar and EuroCity do not share one replacement plan

The current NS International notices distinguish these services for the affected weekend:

ServicePublished changePassenger action
Eurostar toward Belgium and ParisDiverts via Utrecht; no Schiphol Airport or Rotterdam Centraal stopConfirm the actual boarding station and departure for your train
Eurostar toward LondonDoes not call at Rotterdam Centraal; passengers are directed to Amsterdam CentraalCheck the booking notice and journey to Amsterdam
Eurocity DirectRuns only between Breda, Antwerp-Central and Brussels-MidiPlan how to reach the shortened service
EuroCityRuns only between Roosendaal and Brussels-Midi; no Noorderkempen stopCheck whether that remaining route serves your trip

The Paris diversion notice covers November 7 at 06:00 through November 8 at 22:00. The London notice covers November 7 at 05:00 through November 8 at 23:59. The shortened EuroCity arrangements extend from November 7 at 04:00 to November 9 at 02:00. Check the current notice for your departure because the service-specific windows differ.

Do not confuse Eurocity Direct with the ordinary EuroCity. A booking that normally begins in Rotterdam will not become a departure from the same platform just because another international service is still running elsewhere.

A diversion via Utrecht is not permission to board there

A notice describing the line a train uses does not necessarily list its passenger stops. Do not travel to Utrecht expecting to join a reserved international train solely because its diversion passes through that station.

Before changing your departure point, confirm these details with the operator or seller responsible for your booking:

  • The train number and date, not just the destination.
  • The station where you may board and its departure time.
  • Whether your existing ticket is accepted or needs changing.
  • Any revised seat or connection instructions.

Keep the confirmation where you can open it during the journey. If an app labels a trip cancelled or stops displaying the ticket, ask for a usable travel document before setting off. A screenshot of a notification is not automatically a replacement ticket.

Older passengers' accounts can explain why this is confusing, but another person's July journey does not authorize your November boarding change. Follow the instructions attached to your own service and ask again if the booking and current timetable conflict.

Connecting with a flight at Schiphol

The missing Eurostar stop is a specific service change, not a statement that the whole Schiphol railway station is closed. Equally, a normal Rotterdam-to-airport journey time is not a dependable estimate during this work.

Plan to reach the airport for your airline's required arrival time, then add the revised ground journey. Include replacement-bus waiting, changes, luggage handling and the walk from the airport station. Do not make the last feasible connection your only plan if missing the flight would be costly.

If the revised itinerary is too tight, compare an earlier departure or an overnight stay near the airport. Check the cost and conditions before changing bookings. A taxi may be an option for your party, but this guide does not assume a fixed fare, available vehicle or road journey time.

For an arrival into Schiphol, plan onward travel to the final accommodation address. A route that stops outside central Rotterdam may still need a local transfer; tell anyone meeting you the revised arrival point.

Replacement buses: tickets, luggage and access

NS's engineering-work guidance says replacement buses still require a valid ticket. They are not a free journey for someone without one. It also says suitcases can go in the luggage compartment, while bicycles cannot be carried on NS buses.

When transferring from a train to an NS bus, follow the temporary check-in and check-out instructions at the station and bus stop. If your planned diversion uses another operator, check the specific acceptance instructions rather than assuming any independently chosen tram or metro trip is covered.

NS warns of higher boarding steps, longer walks and standing while waiting. Wheelchair and mobility-aid users should arrange a tailored alternative through NS Travel Assistance. Its guidance lists 030 235 7822 and customer-service chat. Confirm the actual arrangement before travelling rather than relying on an ordinary bus icon in a journey plan.

With children or several bags, leave time to get organized at each change. Keep medication, travel documents and the items you need during the bus leg in a small bag you can reach. Ask staff where to wait instead of following a crowd to a stop that may serve a different destination.

Which app should you check?

Use the NS app for the domestic journey and the current NS International notices for the international service. Keep your train operator's booking messages available as well.

NS's notification guidance describes alerts for domestic trains, including cancellation, delay and platform changes. It explicitly says those notifications do not cover international journeys. Turning on domestic alerts therefore does not replace checking your Eurostar or EuroCity booking.

Recheck before leaving accommodation and again before the international connection. Save the replacement departure point, final address and a useful offline street map. An old screenshot can help you orient yourself but cannot show a newly changed departure.

For a wider trip, our Netherlands with kids guide covers family destination choices. Visitors planning a later winter outing can use the separate Amsterdam Light Festival guide; its dates should not be confused with this November rail-work weekend.

Mobile data for revised routes and booking messages

Mobile data is useful when you need a fresh journey plan after leaving station Wi-Fi, or when a booking message changes where someone should meet you. It does not make a train run, reserve a replacement-bus seat or authorize travel on a different ticket.

For international visitors whose home plan charges extra in the Netherlands, OpenSim Netherlands plans provide a separate allowance. The October 25 public catalog listed 1GB for seven days at USD1.24 and 3GB for 15 days at USD3.00, both supporting top-up. A small fixed plan can suit transport checks without buying a much larger allowance for a short visit.

Use an existing included roaming allowance if it already meets your needs. Check the travel data calculator, phone compatibility guide and installation-timing guide before buying or changing settings.

Sources and service updates

Checked October 25, 2026 against the linked NS, NS International and ProRail information. Recheck your exact departure before travel. This page will be updated for material changes to the work, remaining services, replacement arrangements or boarding instructions. After the weekend, treat it as dated reference coverage rather than a guide to a future closure.
