Amsterdam's Amstel river and illuminated waterfront buildings at night in November 2024

Amsterdam Light Festival Edition 15 runs from November 26, 2026, to January 17, 2027. The organizer lists lights on from 16:30 to 23:00 daily, except December 31, when they finish at 21:00. You can see the public-space artworks without an admission ticket; paid walks add interpretation and navigation, while cruises provide a booked boat experience.

Use the official dates and hours for this edition rather than an old winter itinerary. Cruise bookings opened October 1. The route app and map are due later, so booking a December trip now does not mean every walking product is already available.

Should you walk or book a cruise?

ChoiceWhat suits itWhat to check first

Paid Light WalkPeople who want route guidance and artwork explanationsIn-app release, current price and phone setup
Festival cruiseA seated outing with an organized routeExact dock, boat specification and booking conditions

The Edition 15 page says the light art is freely accessible and describes a new route. That separates the public art from the paid services around it. Buying a walk or cruise supports the festival, but neither is a compulsory admission charge for looking at an artwork from public space.

Walking lets you pause, leave for a meal or finish after a section. A cruise gives the evening a fixed structure, which can suit someone who would rather sit than walk between works. It also means accepting the particular boat's view, facilities and departure time. Choose for those differences rather than treating the most expensive option as the best one.

The walking route, app release and unresolved price

The walking FAQ describes a 4.5 km route taking roughly 90 minutes, depending on pace. Allow longer for stops, photographs and breaks; that estimate is not a timed ticket you must complete.

The organizer expects the free-to-download app in mid-November. Its directions page says the paid route becomes available November 24. Do not buy an unrelated map simply because it is already online. This year's new route makes a previous edition's map an unreliable planning shortcut.

There is a price discrepancy to resolve before purchase. On October 16, the walking FAQ listed EUR7.99, while the ticket FAQ listed EUR6.99 for the Light Walk. Both are organizer pages. Check the released in-app product and payable total rather than assuming either figure is final. The Kids Walk price was still unannounced.

That EUR1 difference is small compared with a trip budget, but it illustrates why a page labeled with the right year is not enough. Confirm the actual product before paying. This guide will replace the discrepancy with the confirmed price once the organizer resolves it.

What to compare before paying for a boat

The organizer's cruise FAQ describes glass-roofed canal boats, open boats, partly covered options with drinks, and private arrangements. Cruises generally take about 75 minutes, or around 90 minutes from some more distant departure locations. Traffic can lengthen the trip.

Check these details on the particular product:

  • The departure address, not simply the words "Amsterdam Central" in a listing.
  • Whether seating is enclosed, partly covered or open, and what heating is listed.
  • The commentary language and whether it is recorded or live.
  • Toilets, stroller arrangements and the boarding assistance you need.
  • What food or drinks the price includes, if any.

The official ticket FAQ advertises cruises from EUR29.75. At that starting adult fare, two adults would pay EUR59.50 before any different date, product or checkout charge. That is a budgeting example, not a quote for every sailing. Compare the total for your party, including the children's actual ages, instead of multiplying an advertised "from" price and assuming availability.

A regular canal cruise and a festival cruise are not automatically interchangeable. Check that the selected product explicitly covers the festival route. Save the confirmation, boat company's contact details and dock address together.

Arrival times, changes and cancellations

The cruise FAQ asks visitors to arrive 15 minutes before departure. Add the journey to the dock and time to find the boarding point; those 15 minutes are not a buffer for crossing Amsterdam.

For bookings through the festival shop, the ticket FAQ allows date or time changes up to 24 hours before departure, through the confirmation email's order-management link. It says purchased tickets cannot be cancelled. Read the terms attached to your purchase, especially if using another seller: do not assume a reseller follows the same process.

Avoid booking immediately after an airport arrival or a timed museum visit across town. If that earlier activity runs late, the boat's fixed departure does not move with you. A self-paced walk on an available evening can be easier when your arrival time is uncertain.

Families and access: neither option suits everyone

The organizer recommends the Kids Walk for ages 7 to 12. Its route is still 4.5 km, so a child-friendly story does not remove the walking distance. Choose a section or plan breaks if the full outing would be too much after a sightseeing day.

The directions page flags uneven paving and steep bridges in the historic centre. A wheelchair user should check the relevant section rather than treating "accessible route" as a guarantee of an effortless journey. Boat boarding varies too; confirm the specific sailing and transfer arrangements before purchasing.

Ask about toilets and stroller storage before committing a young child to a boat. A seated trip can solve tired legs but may create another problem if the child needs to leave halfway through. Take warm clothing for the actual boat type, not the heated cabin shown on a different operator's photograph.

New Year's Eve and information-point limits

December 31 has a 21:00 lights-off time, earlier than the normal finish. Plan the art visit first if you want to combine it with later New Year arrangements; do not schedule it as an after-dinner activity based on a normal 23:00 closing time.

The dates page lists information points open Thursday to Sunday, 16:30 to 21:00, and daily during the Christmas holiday period from December 19 to January 3. They are closed December 25 and 31. Festival lighting hours and staffed assistance hours are therefore different.

This matters if you need help or a printed map. Limited printed copies are intended for visitors without a working smartphone. Check the information-point details close to your visit, rather than making your evening depend on finding an open desk whenever the lights are on.

Getting there and keeping the return flexible

The organizer names Amsterdam Central Station and Waterlooplein as useful stops near the route. Your cruise may leave somewhere else. For walking, pick a starting point only after checking the current route and the return journey to your accommodation.

The GVB travel app, Gappie, provides route planning, current departures and disruption information. Check it on the day and again before heading home. Save your accommodation address and a broad offline city map, while keeping the event's artwork locations separate from an ordinary street map.

Keep clear of cycle lanes when stopping for a photograph, and choose a place away from the canal edge to gather a group or check a phone. You are visiting public streets as well as an art route.

For a wider family itinerary, see our Netherlands with kids guide. Leave room for an ordinary dinner and a warm indoor break rather than trying to fill every winter evening with another reservation.

Mobile data for the route and booking messages

Download tickets and save the dock address before leaving. Check what the released festival app stores offline; its published GPS features do not by themselves guarantee every map or audio function works without a connection.

OpenSim's Netherlands plans provide a separate travel allowance for transport updates and messages. On October 16, the catalog listed Netherlands 5GB for 30 days at USD4.76, with top-up support for that listed plan. A fixed allowance can make spending clearer than an unknown home-network roaming rate, while a home plan with enough included Netherlands data may already meet your needs.

Use the travel data calculator and check installation timing before departure. A data plan does not reserve a boat seat, unlock a paid festival product or guarantee reception throughout the route.

Sources and historical Amsterdam photograph

Details were checked October 16, 2026, against the linked festival and transport pages. The organizer is still adding Edition 15 information. This guide will be updated for the app release, confirmed walking prices, route publication and material changes to cruise terms, hours or access. No 2026 artwork review or firsthand visit is implied.
