Sapporo Autumn Illuminations 2026: free walk or garden ticket?

Autumn trees reflected in the pond at Nakajima Park, photographed in October 2009

Sapporo Autumn Illuminations runs at Nakajima Park from October 23 to November 3, 2026, with park lighting from 17:00 to 21:00. You can enjoy the ginkgo avenue and pond area without buying the Japanese Garden ticket. Add the garden if you want its light-and-sound display; eat first if you are visiting the sweet-potato stalls, which close earlier.

This is an autumn evening outing near Susukino, not the winter White Illumination season. If your trip starts after November 3, use our separate Sapporo winter lights guide rather than assume these autumn installations continue.

The photograph shows the actual park in October 2009, during daylight. It is not a picture of this year's lights or a forecast of the leaves you will find.

What is free at Nakajima Park's autumn light-up?

The event's official guide and map distinguish the wider park displays from the paid Japanese Garden:

Part of the eveningPublished hoursWhat you pay for
Ginkgo avenue, pond-side displays and illuminated Hoheikan17:00-21:00No Japanese Garden ticket needed
Japanese Garden night display17:15-21:00; last entry 20:45Separate garden admission
Yakiimo Terrace food event11:00-20:00; November 3 closes 19:00Entry free; food and drinks extra

Start with the free walk if you mainly want an hour outdoors before dinner. The garden adds a synchronized light-and-sound show and an expanded Japanese-umbrella area. Choose it for that experience, rather than because you think all of Nakajima Park has become ticketed.

Use the event map for the evening layout. A normal daytime park route should not be treated as confirmation that every path or entrance operates in the same way during the light-up.

Is the advance Japanese Garden ticket cheaper?

The Sapporo Tourism Association's event notice lists JPY600 including tax on the day, or JPY500 in advance plus fees. Elementary-school children and younger enter free. The organizer links to the advance seller from its event website; availability is limited.

The headline difference is JPY100 per paying visitor before fees. Compare the final checkout total, including any payment-method fee, before deciding. An advance ticket is not automatically the cheaper choice.

For example, two paying adults with two children who qualify for free entry would pay JPY1,200 for the two standard same-day admissions. Two advance adult tickets start at JPY1,000 before fees. Food, photographs and other optional purchases are separate from that comparison.

The garden opens fifteen minutes after the general lighting starts. Arriving at 17:00 gives you time to orient yourself, but do not assume immediate garden entry or a particular queue length. If this is your main activity, leave more than the final fifteen minutes between last entry and closing.

Eat before the sweet-potato stalls close

Sapporo Yakiimo Terrace runs on the same October 23-November 3 dates at Minami 9-jo Plaza, outside the children's puppet theatre and children's hall. Its normal hours are 11:00-20:00, with last orders fifteen minutes before closing. On November 3, it finishes at 19:00, so last orders are 18:45.

The 2026 stall announcement lists roasted sweet potatoes, sweet-potato desserts and drinks across 18 planned booths. It includes Hokkaido growers and four first-time roasted-potato vendors. Browse the actual menus rather than assuming every photograph from an earlier year is a current offering.

A baked potato can be a snack between the walk and dinner; you do not have to turn the outing into a full food tour. Confirm ingredients with the seller if you need allergy-aware food. The visitor notice says payment is generally cash only, with cashless payment at some stalls. Bring yen rather than depend on your phone wallet. Stock can sell out or be replenished in batches; the posted closing time is not a guarantee that every item remains available.

On the final evening, reverse a late-night plan: eat before the 18:45 food cutoff, then return to the lights. Their 21:00 finish does not keep the food stalls open.

A short autumn route without a rental car

The food organizer identifies Nakajima Koen station on the Namboku subway line, exits 1 and 3, beside the plaza. Save the station name in Japanese, 中島公園, as well as your accommodation address. The official park information helps you locate the pond and cultural buildings.

For a straightforward first visit:

  1. Arrive with time to look at the food stalls before the lights start.
  2. Walk the ginkgo avenue and choose a short pond-side section from the current event map.
  3. Add the Japanese Garden only if your group wants the paid display and has time for it.
  4. Return toward your chosen subway entrance or dinner reservation instead of trying to cover the whole park.

Allow 60-90 minutes plus food or garden time as a planning budget, not an organizer's measured route duration. A photographer may want longer; a family with a tired child may prefer the free walk and a snack. Confirm the lift route with the transport operator if stairs are a problem. The nearest numbered exit is not a guarantee of a continuous step-free journey through the event.

Will the autumn leaves still be there on your date?

The event's closing date and the trees' condition are different things. A ticket buys admission to the display, not a guarantee of peak foliage. Wind, rain and the particular trees you choose can change what an evening looks like.

Use the park office's foliage information for local context, checking the date of any report or photograph. Do not move a whole Hokkaido itinerary around a city-wide forecast alone. If you arrive on November 8, for example, this light-up will already have finished even if some trees still hold their leaves.

Bring an outer layer suitable for the evening forecast and shoes you can walk in comfortably. Keep the route short enough to leave if your group gets cold. Ask the organizer about current surfaces, toilets and access arrangements if those determine whether the visit is practical for you; an attractive park photograph cannot answer those questions.

Maps, tickets and mobile data for the rest of Japan

Save the event map, any garden booking, the subway station and your hotel's address before leaving Wi-Fi. Use your usual mapping or translation app for the trip back, but follow on-site signs if the route differs. Families planning more than one evening can use our Japan with kids guide.

On October 28, OpenSim Japan plans listed 1GB for seven days at USD1.40 and 3GB for 15 days at USD3.40, both eligible for top-up. A small fixed allowance can suit checking transport and messages during a short stay, while the longer validity can fit travel beyond Sapporo. It avoids buying a large package solely for occasional evening navigation.

Check your home plan first: if it already includes enough usable Japan data, another purchase may be unnecessary. Mobile data does not guarantee reception in every part of the park or include event admission. Our Japan connectivity guide, travel data calculator, phone compatibility guide and installation timing guide cover the separate setup decisions.

Sources and updates

Dates, admission and operating details were checked October 28, 2026 against the linked organizers and tourism sources. Recheck same-day notices before visiting, particularly the November 3 food cutoff. This guide will be reviewed for material programme, ticket or access changes and after the event ends; it is not a live foliage report.
