Shuri Castle 2026: festival dates and reopening tickets

Shurijo Castle's festival runs November 1-3, 2026, but the restored main hall opens to the public on November 23 at noon. These are different reasons to visit Naha. Choose the early-November dates for processions and performances; choose November 23 onward if going inside the Seiden, the main hall, is your priority. The park is closed on November 22.
A general castle visit, a street parade and a timed interior visit need different plans. Before booking a flight or filling an arrival afternoon, check which one you want. An image of the restored building does not establish that its interior is already open.
Which November dates fit your visit?
The official Okinawa tourism listing places the Revival Festival at the castle park, Kokusai Street and other locations. It is not one continuous show at the castle entrance.
| Visit date | What to plan around | Main decision |
|---|---|---|
| October 31 | Separate festival pre-event | A short park outing rather than the three-day festival |
| November 1-3 | Revival Festival in Naha and Shuri | Choose a programme and its actual location |
| November 22 | Park closure | Put another Naha activity in your itinerary |
| November 23 | Public main hall opening from noon | Reserve interior entry; do not arrive expecting ordinary morning access |
| Later visits | Main hall reservation or a visit without interior entry | Check exactly which ticket you are buying |
The September 28 closure notice covers all park facilities on November 22. On November 23, the free area inside the castle walls opens at 11:15 and the paid area at 12:00. Those exceptions matter more than the usual opening hours for anyone travelling over the holiday weekend.
Choose a festival day by location
Use the organizer's 2026 programme, not a previous year's poster. All times below are Japan time.
| Date | Selected programme | Location | Admission detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| October 31 | SYURI NO UTA live, 13:30-16:00 | Suimuikan lawn stage | Free preview |
| November 1 | Ryukyu Dynasty procession, 12:30-15:00 | Kokusai Street | Free to watch |
| November 2 | King and queen appearance, 10:00, 11:00 and 12:00 | In front of Hoshinmon | Free to watch |
| November 3 | Historic procession, 12:45-16:00 | Castle park, then Ryutan Street | Free to watch |
The November 3 procession moves from the park to the street; standing at one place does not cover the whole route. Traffic restrictions begin at noon around Kokusai Street on November 1, and at 12:30 around the Shuri procession route on November 3. Check the linked restriction map before arranging a pickup.
The special reconstruction tours are fully booked, including the waiting list, and do not include the main hall interior. Do not build a trip around getting one at the door. Other activities have their own admission and capacity rules; a free performance does not make every part of the park free.
For a first visit, choose one main programme, then leave room for lunch and the journey back. Trying to watch a city-centre parade and be at the castle for another performance at the same time will make the day mostly about moving between them.
The November 23 ceremony is not general admission
Okinawa's opening announcement schedules the ceremony for 09:00-09:45 on November 23, by invitation only. The later October 19 invitation notice is directed at Okinawa residents. A visitor's ordinary ticket should not be treated as an invitation to that ceremony.
If you want the opening-day interior visit, work backwards from a confirmed afternoon reservation. Allow time for the approach and queue, and avoid a tight onward flight connection. If the opening date itself is not important to you, choose a later date with a suitable available slot rather than relying on a cancellation.
Buy the ticket that includes the main hall interior
The park's English ticket guide distinguishes admission with a Seiden interior reservation from admission without one. The second option permits the other paid-area sights and exterior viewing, but not entry inside the hall.
For an interior visit, follow the official guide's Webket purchase link, select a date and slot, and keep the QR code ready. Same-day reservations are possible only if space remains, online until 15 minutes before the slot or at the Koufukumon ticket office. There is no guaranteed walk-in allocation.
January 2027 individual visits go on sale November 1 at 13:00 Japan time, following the rule for the first day of the month two months ahead. November 23-December 31 visits had September 1 and October 1 releases. Check live availability; those dates are not a statement that tickets remain.
Except for preschool children, even annual-pass holders and visitors eligible for free admission need an interior reservation. The guide recommends a slot 40-50 minutes after arrival at Shuri Station. Reaching the station is not reaching the hall.
What changes in the admission price?
The official fee page lists these tax-inclusive individual prices, checked October 29. The November 22 closure falls between the two periods.
| Visitor | Through November 21 | From November 23 |
|---|---|---|
| Adult | JPY400 | JPY1,000 |
| High-school student | JPY300 | JPY760 |
| Elementary or junior-high student | JPY160 | JPY370 |
| Under six | Free | Free |
From November 23, the paid-area price is the same whether or not your ticket includes an interior reservation. Choosing a slot adds no separate reservation fee. Buying the ticket without interior entry is therefore a choice about access and time, not a cheaper way inside the hall.
Check the park's rules for any exemption you intend to use. An age-based concession for Okinawa residents should not be assumed to apply to every overseas visitor of the same age.
Reach Shuri without renting a car
The park's access guide lists Shuri Station on Yui Rail, roughly 27 minutes from Naha Airport Station. It gives about 15 minutes on foot from Shuri Station to Shureimon gate. That is an approach estimate, not a complete visit time or a step-free-route guarantee.
For a festival visit from central Naha, save separate pins for the programme location and your return station. Kokusai Street and the castle park are different destinations. If you are staying in Chatan or farther north, check the full bus or transfer journey rather than assuming the monorail serves your accommodation.
The park recommends public transport because parking is limited and can fill in the morning. A car can help with other parts of an Okinawa trip, but it is not necessary just to put this Naha visit into your itinerary. Nor does a taxi remove the final walk or road restrictions.
Allow extra time with luggage, young children or anyone who needs a slower approach. On an arrival day, leave bags at accommodation when possible and make the castle the main outing, rather than adding it between a late landing and a fixed dinner booking.
Accessibility, children and a slower visit
The park's accessibility information describes slopes, lifts, multipurpose toilets and a reduced-step visiting course. Free wheelchairs, walking sticks and strollers are available at designated information points, but stock is limited, first come and cannot be reserved.
Use the official route and ask staff about the part you want to see. The existence of an accessible course does not establish that every historic path, procession viewpoint or approach from a station suits every visitor. Arrange anything essential to your day before setting out.
For children, watching one procession or a short performance may be enough before food and a break. Do not promise them an interior castle visit during the early-November festival. Our Japan with kids guide covers the wider trip rather than this event's admission rules.
Check the current organizer notice before an outdoor programme. A forecast discussed in an old travel thread is not a present-day closure notice. Keep a flexible alternative if weather changes the event or makes the walk unsuitable for your group.
Useful apps, tickets and mobile data
The official Shuri Castle browser app has a digital guide map and audio at selected points in Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean. It needs no app-store download. Open it before leaving and save your accommodation and station locations in your map app; do not assume every browser feature will work offline.
Mobile data helps with the walking route, the official guide and messages when your group separates. It cannot create a sold-out reservation, override the closure or guarantee that a crowded location has a strong signal. Keep your booking confirmation accessible and carry enough phone charge for the return journey.
The OpenSim Japan catalog, checked October 29, listed 1GB for seven days at USD1.40 and 3GB for 15 days at USD3.40, both with top-up support. A smaller fixed allowance can suit a short Naha visit using maps and tickets, especially when the alternative is paying for a larger home-network travel add-on. Compare your actual roaming entitlement first: if Japan data is already included, another plan may be unnecessary.
Use the travel data calculator for uploads or a longer itinerary. Check phone compatibility and installation timing before departure. For a wider provider comparison, use the separate Japan eSIM guide.
Sources and updates
Programme, closure, entry, prices, transport and app details were checked against Shurijo Castle Park, Okinawa's completion-event notices and the official tourism site on October 29, 2026. The links above lead to those sources; ticket availability remains live.

We will update this page for confirmed programme, ticket, access and opening changes. After November 3, treat the festival timetable as dated reference information; check the main hall's current reservation rules for later visits.
