T-Mobile and Jio 5G roaming: what changes for travelers
T-Mobile and Reliance Jio announced commercial standalone 5G roaming between the United States and India on September 21, 2026. It connects T-Mobile customers visiting India through Jio and Jio customers visiting the US through T-Mobile. Before relying on it, confirm that your particular line, phone and roaming plan qualify: the announcement does not provide a complete eligibility list or add a new data allowance.
India is one of the two markets in the agreement. This destination photograph does not demonstrate network coverage or a tested roaming connection.
The T-Mobile announcement names Syniverse as the roaming technology partner. GSMA covered the development on September 28, but the original announcement date remains September 21.
For someone flying from Chicago to Delhi or Mumbai to New York, the useful question is whether the service works with the account and phone already in their pocket. A network upgrade alone does not settle what that traveler will pay.
What standalone 5G changes
Standalone 5G, usually shortened to SA, uses a 5G core network. Non-standalone 5G still relies on a 4G core. T-Mobile says the new roaming connection can bring faster speeds and lower latency abroad. Those are operator claims, not measured results for your hotel, airport or handset.
There is also a gap in the consumer documentation. As checked on September 28, Jio's general international 5G FAQ still says that 5G roaming will become available through overseas partners soon. The commercial announcement and that FAQ do not provide a consistent, line-specific setup answer.
Treat the launch as confirmation of the carrier agreement. Ask your carrier to confirm access on your actual account before buying a phone, changing a tariff or purchasing a roaming pack specifically for standalone 5G.

T-Mobile's departure checklist directs customers to check destination and device coverage and make sure international roaming is available on the line. It also says the device must register on T-Mobile's US network and make a call before international use.
Jio's roaming terms make packs subject to their listed destinations, partner networks and device requirements. Prepaid and postpaid pack start rules can differ. Check the terms attached to the pack you are buying, especially if you purchase it several days before flying.
Save your confirmed allowance and support instructions somewhere you can open without a connection. If you arrive without service, that record is more useful than a launch headline.
Where an OpenSim plan fits
Keeping your existing carrier's roaming may be the simplest choice when its included allowance covers your trip and you need the usual number. There is no reason to buy another data plan just because a network has announced a new technology.

The India plan lists Airtel, not Jio. Neither listing confirms access to the T-Mobile/Jio standalone roaming agreement. Choose these plans for their stated data allowance, validity and eligible top-ups; a 5G network label is not a promise of a particular speed or network core.
Compare the current India plans or United States plans against your own carrier's allowance before checkout. The quoted prices can change. These catalog listings do not confirm hotspot support, calls, SMS, a local number or activation timing. Check any feature essential to your trip before buying.
For a separate data budget: an OpenSim plan gives you a specific allowance to buy for the destination. Keep your home number active separately if you need it, and check its roaming charges. Buying travel data does not keep an expired home-line plan alive.

Questions about the new US and India roaming connection
Can every T-Mobile or Jio customer use standalone 5G abroad now?
The announcement confirms commercial service between the carriers, but it does not list every eligible tariff, phone or account type. Jio's general FAQ still uses future-tense wording. Have the carrier check your exact line and travel direction rather than assuming that every subscriber is enabled.
Will US Mobile or another provider on T-Mobile's network get it too?
The release does not confirm access for other providers. Ask the provider that bills your line whether its own roaming arrangement includes standalone 5G on Jio. Using T-Mobile domestically does not, by itself, establish the terms of an overseas connection.
Does a phone that supports 5G at home qualify in the other country?
That alone is not enough to confirm this service. Supported bands, software, regional model and carrier configuration can matter. Use the carrier's compatibility check for the exact device. Do not buy a replacement phone solely because its specification sheet says 5G or standalone 5G.
Does this launch include more data or free roaming?
No new free allowance is announced. Check the data and calling benefits already attached to your line. If you need a separate T-Mobile International Pass, confirm its allowance and effective date when adding it. Faster network access does not increase the number of gigabytes in a pack.
What should I do if my Jio line shows SOS or no service in the US?
Check that roaming is active, the account and pack remain valid, and the selected network is permitted by your plan. Jio's no-network guidance includes LTE and manual network selection. Follow the instructions for your destination and line; do not force a 5G-only setting in pursuit of SA.
Can I receive bank OTPs on Jio with only a prepaid balance?
The SA announcement does not answer that question or specify a minimum recharge. Ask Jio what domestic validity, roaming activation and balance your particular line needs. If SMS stops after a pack expires, have Jio check the account. Neither a 5G connection nor a separate travel eSIM guarantees delivery of a bank's message.
Will an annual voice-and-SMS plan keep my number working abroad?
Do not assume that domestic validity establishes international roaming eligibility. Confirm the exact annual plan and required roaming service with the carrier. The new network agreement is not a published number-retention offer, and another customer's recharge history is not a dependable rule for your account.
Can I keep my usual number while using OpenSim for data?
On a supported dual-SIM phone, you can select a separate line for cellular data while keeping the home line available. Apple's dual-SIM instructions explain the controls and require an unlocked iPhone when using two different carriers. Check both lines' settings and charges. Keeping a number switched on does not make its calls or messages free.
Can I top up the OpenSim plans, and do they include hotspot use?
The two specific plans above were listed as supporting top-ups. That does not apply to every OpenSim plan: non-reloadable packages remain purchasable but cannot be topped up. Hotspot support is not stated in these catalog listings. Check it before depending on a laptop connection.
Can I use this roaming arrangement for a long stay overseas?
T-Mobile's international roaming rules require US residence and primary usage on its US network; the service is not intended for extended international use. For a move or a stay lasting months, confirm the carrier's limits and a separate way to retain your number. The SA announcement does not replace those conditions.
