Thomas Cook free eSIM: who gets 1GB and what it covers

August 20, 2026 update. Thomas Cook's August 19 Kolet guide says customers who booked a package holiday on or after July 29, 2026 can claim 1GB for each eligible passenger. The package lasts 48 hours or until the 1GB is used, whichever comes first, and is limited to people who have not used Kolet before.

That is useful arrival data, not an unlimited plan for the whole holiday. It can cover maps, booking details and messages after landing, but streaming, video calls, automatic photo backups or hotspot use can consume 1GB quickly.

The short answer: claim the free data if every traveler who needs it is eligible. Install with reliable internet before departure, then activate after landing and treat that activation as the start of the 48-hour window. Compare a separate full-trip plan before flying if 1GB, two days or one phone per eligible passenger will not cover the trip.

The Thomas Cook offer at a glance

The August 19 Kolet guidance replaces unsupported earlier wording

Two Thomas Cook pages currently appear in search, and they describe different providers. A third promotions page that previously supplied Kolet eligibility wording no longer contains that section.

The August 19 guide names Kolet, covers package holidays booked on or after July 29, provides 1GB for each eligible passenger and excludes people who have used Kolet before. A separate mobile data terms page still names Airalo. That older page describes one package per booking and includes a May 31, 2026 booking cutoff, with wording that the offer might be extended.

Use the provider named in the email or redemption link attached to your booking. A customer who booked under the earlier offer may still receive Airalo instructions, while an eligible current package-holiday booking can use Kolet. Do not enter the old Airalo process when Thomas Cook sent a Kolet link, or the reverse.

Who qualifies for the free 1GB?

Thomas Cook's August 19 guide sets four clear conditions:

1. Book a package holiday on or after July 29, 2026.
2. Be included as a passenger on that booking.
3. Activate Kolet for the first time.
4. Redeem through the unique link emailed before travel or through Manage My Booking.

This is narrower than the wording previously visible on Thomas Cook's promotions page. The current first-party guide does not promise the Kolet benefit for flight-only bookings, so this page no longer claims that they qualify. The booking confirmation, Manage My Booking and redemption message remain the practical proof that a particular order qualifies.

The guide says 1GB is available for each eligible passenger, not just the lead traveler. Each person who wants to use the benefit still needs a compatible, carrier-unlocked phone and must satisfy the new-Kolet-user condition. One passenger's previous Kolet use does not disqualify the others.

When should you install and activate it?

Thomas Cook now says it emails a unique link 72 hours before the holiday starts. A traveler who booked an eligible package on or after July 29 can also check Manage My Booking. The app can be downloaded and the profile installed without entering card details or starting a subscription.

Kolet's installation guide advises installing before the flight on a private, stable connection. Its general validity guide describes a first-data-use trigger, while Thomas Cook's offer-specific guide says the 48 hours begin when the traveler activates after landing. Follow the redeemed plan's instructions and treat activation as the start so the allowance is not planned beyond the disclosed window.

Use this sequence:

1. Confirm that the phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
2. Open the Thomas Cook email link or Manage My Booking on a reliable private connection.
3. Download Kolet, create the required account and install the profile.
4. Keep the travel line off for mobile data until the covered destination unless Kolet's redeemed-plan screen tells you otherwise.
5. After landing, select the travel line for mobile data and follow Kolet's destination activation steps.
6. Turn off data roaming on the home line and disable automatic cellular-data switching if it could return data to that line.

Is 1GB enough for a package holiday?

One gigabyte is a sensible arrival allowance when the phone is used for maps, hotel messages, a ride request and light browsing. It is not a reliable whole-trip allowance for a family uploading videos, using a laptop hotspot or navigating every day without hotel Wi-Fi.

The answer depends on behavior, not only trip length. Check recent mobile usage on the phone, then use the travel data calculator to model maps, social video, calls, music, work and hotspot use. Turn off app updates and cloud photo backups over mobile data before relying on the free package.

If several passengers each receive 1GB, their allowances remain on separate phones. Kolet's public help does not say that Thomas Cook's free allowances form one shared family pool.

Does the Thomas Cook package include a phone number?

The Thomas Cook benefit is described as mobile data. It does not promise a local number, regular carrier calls or SMS.

Kolet now offers paid internet calls inside its app using Koins, but its calling guide says SMS is not supported. That calling feature uses an internet connection and is separate from the free data allowance.

You can keep the usual SIM active for incoming texts if the phone supports dual SIM, but the home carrier may charge for roaming calls or data. Select the travel line for data, turn roaming off on the home line and check the home carrier's rules before expecting bank codes or ordinary calls abroad. Can the free data be shared by hotspot?

Kolet's current eSIM help page says hotspot sharing is allowed on compatible devices. The shared devices use the same 1GB, so a laptop update or another person's video can shorten the useful life of the trial.

Use hotspot only when it solves a specific task. A second passenger with an eligible code should normally activate that passenger's own allowance rather than routing every device through one 1GB package.

Coverage must be checked at redemption

Partnership reports say Kolet works in more than 190 destinations. That broad number is not a promise that every airport, island, cruise route or country is included in the exact free package.

Open the redeemed plan and confirm the destination before travel. Cruise coverage is a separate issue because ordinary land-network plans generally do not connect to a ship's maritime mobile network at sea. Border itineraries also need checking country by country.

Save the installation instructions, hotel address and an offline map before departure. Mobile service can still slow down in an airport crowd or fail inside a terminal even when the destination is included.

Top-ups and support belong to Kolet

Thomas Cook says Kolet provides and manages the profile, including any extra data bought through it. The guide advertises 24/7 human support and directs technical help to Kolet's help center or in-app chatbot rather than the hotel or Thomas Cook holiday team.

Kolet's top-up guide lists paid country, regional and global packages. Their sizes, validity and prices are separate from the free two-day trial. Check the offer in the app before treating a top-up as the cheapest full-trip option.

If the promised link has not arrived 72 hours before departure, check the booking email, spam folder and Manage My Booking. Thomas Cook controls whether the booking qualifies and supplies the promotion route. Once a Kolet account or installed package has a technical problem, the current guide points to Kolet.

Thomas Cook free data versus Roaming eSIM

The free offer and a separately purchased Roaming eSIM solve different parts of the trip.

Where Roaming eSIM has the edge: it is the better fit when the plan needs to cover the full holiday, the traveler already uses Kolet, or the route needs a specific country or regional allowance chosen before departure. The Thomas Cook offer is the better value for the first two days when the traveler qualifies and 1GB is enough, because that allowance is free.

The live Roaming eSIM catalog was rechecked on August 20 and returned multiple Spain and Turkey plan choices with different allowances, validity periods, listed networks and top-up status. Package terms vary, so open the selected card rather than assuming every plan is reloadable or has the same activation rule. Ten questions travelers ask about the Thomas Cook free eSIM

1. Is Thomas Cook really giving away mobile data? Yes. Its August 19 guide describes 1GB for each eligible passenger on a package holiday booked on or after July 29.
2. Do flight-only bookings qualify? The current offer guide promises the Kolet benefit for eligible package holidays, not flight-only bookings. Do not rely on the older wording unless the booking itself supplies a valid redemption route.
3. Does every passenger receive 1GB? The current Kolet clause says the allowance is available for each passenger in the booking. Each user still needs an eligible device and first Kolet activation.

7. Does the package include calls, SMS or a local number? No such carrier service is promised. Kolet has a separate paid internet-calling feature, but it does not support SMS.
8. Can I use the 1GB as a hotspot? Kolet permits hotspot use on compatible devices, but all connected devices draw from the same small allowance.
9. Can I buy more data after the free 1GB? Yes. Kolet sells paid top-ups, but their destination, price and validity should be compared before purchase.
10. Should I still buy a full-trip plan? Yes when two days or 1GB will not cover the itinerary, the traveler is not eligible, or the trip needs a route-specific allowance selected in advance.
