U Mobile's Malaysia tourist eSIM costs RM15, but the balance check matters

August 5, 2026. U Mobile has launched an ULTRA Tourist prepaid plan for non-Malaysian visitors. Its headline package provides 100GB for seven days at RM15, allows hotspot use and includes a Grab Visit Malaysia 2026 Travel Pass advertised as worth up to RM186.

The offer has been available since July 7. It can be bought as a physical SIM or through U Mobile's eSIM channel, but the checkout details deserve more attention than the headline price. A foreign subscriber needs at least RM15.90 in prepaid credit to activate the seven-day package. The Grab benefit applies only to the first purchase, is subject to stock and has separate account requirements.

The practical point: U Mobile's seven-day package is a strong Malaysia-only offer for an eligible traveler who expects heavy data use. Before choosing it, allow for the RM15.90 balance, identity registration, Grab setup and route-specific coverage. A regional Roaming eSIM is the clearer option when the trip continues into Singapore, Thailand or other nearby countries.

What U Mobile launched for tourists in Malaysia

The July 7 U Mobile announcement introduced a dedicated prepaid rate plan for travelers with non-Malaysian passports. U Mobile highlights the seven-day package, but its current terms list three data choices.

All three plans use U Mobile's 4G and 5G network in Malaysia. The 24-hour and seven-day options do not auto-renew. The 30-day package does, provided the account has the required balance. Unused data is lost when a plan expires or when the same plan replaces an active subscription.

The rate plan itself has a 15-day active period followed by a 60-day passive period. Each RM1 top-up extends the active period by one day, or leaves the existing 15-day period in place if that is longer. That account lifecycle matters most for an extended stay or a later add-on; it does not turn a seven-day data package into 15 days of data.

Why RM15 requires an RM15.90 balance

U Mobile advertises the seven-day package at RM15. Its ULTRA Tourist terms separately require a minimum credit balance of RM15.90 before activation. The corresponding minimums are RM6.50 for 10GB and RM53 for 500GB.

The reason appears in U Mobile's traveler FAQ: prepaid top-ups by non-Malaysian subscribers are subject to Malaysia's 6% service tax. A top-up can therefore add less usable credit than the amount paid. For example, the FAQ says an RM30 top-up produces RM28.30 of prepaid balance after tax.

Do not judge activation readiness from the top-up receipt alone. Open MyUMobile and confirm that the credited balance meets the package minimum. This is also why a traveler with exactly RM15 of remaining credit cannot activate the plan advertised at RM15.

Can travelers buy the U Mobile eSIM before arrival?

U Mobile says the eSIM version can be purchased through its website or MyUMobile app before the journey. The physical SIM is sold through 32 U Mobile stores, selected dealers and 7-Eleven outlets at Malaysia's international airports.

Buying before departure is useful only if the phone is unlocked and supports eSIM. U Mobile also requires subscriber registration. Its current self-registration instructions tell foreign customers to use an original, valid international passport and complete facial recognition against the identity document.

Malaysia's wider 2026 tourist SIM registration rules also cap a non-Malaysian at two prepaid lines per provider and require a tourist-registered line to end no later than three months after registration. U Mobile's 24-hour, 7-day and 30-day data packages are shorter, but repeated top-ups do not override that separate local-line ceiling.

A safe sequence is:

1. Check that the phone is unlocked and supports eSIM.
2. Install MyUMobile and keep enough home or Wi-Fi data for identity checks and profile installation.
3. Use the same valid passport throughout registration.
4. Confirm the prepaid balance, then activate the required data package.
5. Save the eSIM details and first-arrival route offline before flying.
6. Select the U Mobile line for mobile data after arrival and leave the usual line available if it is needed for calls or verification texts.

What the Grab Visit Malaysia 2026 Travel Pass actually includes

U Mobile says the first purchase of its 100GB package includes 22 Grab vouchers for rides, GrabFood, dine-out offers and GrabMart, with combined savings advertised as worth up to RM186. This is a voucher bundle, not RM186 in cash or a guaranteed saving on any itinerary.

Five conditions can affect whether it is useful:

1. The pass is limited to the first 100GB package purchase.
2. U Mobile says availability is first come, first served while stocks last.
3. The redemption code is sent to the registered email address after successful purchase and activation.
4. U Mobile instructs the traveler to use a Grab account registered to an international phone number, not a Malaysian +60 number, that can receive an OTP.
5. A valid credit or debit card must be linked to the Grab account to complete redemption.

The pass lasts 30 days after successful redemption. Individual vouchers can still have their own minimum spend, service, area or booking conditions, so the highest advertised value should not be treated as a discount on the SIM price. Grab's Travel Pass page also says country passes work only in the named country.

Keep the usual mobile number active until the Grab account is working. A data connection from U Mobile does not make an international OTP appear, and the Grab pass does not extend to Singapore or Thailand.

The free 24-hour U Mobile trial is a different offer

Search results can mix the new paid plan with U Mobile's earlier 24-hour ULTRA5G Trial eSIM. They are not interchangeable.

The current trial terms say a non-Malaysian tourist must scan a trial QR code available at participating international airports in Malaysia. Existing U Mobile subscribers are excluded, and the trial can be redeemed once per passport for the lifetime of the offer. U Mobile lists the promotion as running from February 12 until further notice.

That makes the trial an arrival option, not a dependable pre-trip substitute for the seven-day package. A traveler who needs data immediately after landing should still save the airport address, transfer details and booking references offline in case the QR redemption or registration cannot be completed.

Does 100GB of unlimited-speed data mean unlimited data?

No. U Mobile uses "Unlimited" in the speed row of its table, while the allowance remains 100GB. Its terms describe unlimited speed within the specified quota and also state that actual performance can change with device capability, tower capacity, distance, traffic and coverage.

Hotspot use is included, but it consumes the same package allowance. The terms allow ordinary data use on smartphones and do not permit the SIM to be used as a non-hotspot connection in a MiFi device or USB dongle. Peer-to-peer traffic is limited to 64kbps.

The 500GB package includes two three-hour ULTRA5G Priority passes. The shorter packages can buy Priority access from RM2 per hour. Priority is not extra data, and the special network label appears only on a compatible 5G Standalone phone within ULTRA5G coverage.

Will U Mobile cover Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi and Borneo?

The plan uses U Mobile's own 4G and 5G coverage. U Mobile promotes coverage at major airports, transport hubs, tourist areas and urban centers, but its coverage map explicitly says the map is indicative, not a guarantee of signal, speed or indoor reception.

Check every important stop rather than searching only for the country name. This matters for island stays, road trips, rural areas and itineraries in Sabah or Sarawak. Download the first transfer, accommodation address and a local map before leaving a known connection.

5G is not guaranteed throughout the trip. A compatible device can use 4G where 5G or 5G Standalone is unavailable. If the itinerary depends on laptop work or a large upload, confirm both coverage and hotspot behavior at the actual location and keep a second connection method in mind.

Does the U Mobile tourist plan include calls, SMS or a local number?

U Mobile describes the tourist allowances as data-only. The published package table does not include a call or SMS allowance. Do not choose it on the assumption that local voice calls or international texts are bundled.

Data can support WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal and other internet calling services. The usual SIM can remain enabled for its phone number if the handset supports dual SIM, but home-carrier roaming charges can still apply. U Mobile tourist eSIM versus Roaming eSIM

For a seven-day, Malaysia-only trip with heavy data use, U Mobile's 100GB package is difficult to beat on headline value. It is the sensible choice when the traveler is eligible, the route matches U Mobile coverage and the passport, app, balance and Grab conditions are acceptable.

Roaming eSIM has the clearer edge for a different trip: crossing from Malaysia into Singapore or Thailand, choosing a smaller trip-specific allowance, avoiding a Malaysian prepaid registration workflow, or keeping connectivity independent of a limited Grab promotion.

Ten questions travelers ask about U Mobile's Malaysia tourist plan

1. Can I buy the U Mobile eSIM before arriving in Malaysia? U Mobile says the eSIM version is available through its website or MyUMobile app before the journey. Complete compatibility and identity checks while a reliable connection is available.
2. Do I need a passport and a selfie? Expect identity registration. U Mobile's foreign-customer self-registration instructions require a valid original international passport and facial recognition.
3. Is the seven-day package RM15 or RM15.90? The package price is RM15, but the terms require at least RM15.90 of prepaid credit for activation because foreign-subscriber top-ups are subject to service tax.
4. Is 100GB unlimited data? No. It is a 100GB quota with U Mobile's "Unlimited" speed label. Network conditions and coverage still affect actual performance.
5. Can I share the data by hotspot? Yes. Hotspot use is included and comes from the same data quota. The terms do not allow ordinary non-hotspot use in a MiFi or USB dongle.
