UAE flight delays September 2026: Dubai and Abu Dhabi update

Dubai International Airport and Zayed International Airport remain open, but that does not mean every flight is running on time. On September 2, selected services at both hubs were delayed, cancelled or rerouted as airlines adjusted to renewed regional airspace disruption.

Check your flight number on the operating airline's own site before leaving for the airport. A general airport update cannot confirm a specific booking, connection or bag. If the airline changes the flight, use the contact route attached to the booking: the airline for a direct reservation, or the travel agent when the agent controls the ticket.

The short answer: do not treat the UAE flight delays as a blanket airport closure. Verify the exact flight, screenshot the status and new itinerary, check every connection on the same ticket, and keep medicine, documents, chargers and one change of essential clothing in the cabin bag. Timings may change again after you set out.

What is happening at UAE airports?

Current reporting shows a mixed operation rather than a complete shutdown. The National recorded delays across Etihad, Emirates, flydubai, Air Arabia Abu Dhabi, Air India Express and other carriers on September 2. Gulf News also reported a combination of operating, delayed, diverted and cancelled services.

The disruption is not limited to one destination or one airline. Reported examples included routes between the UAE and the United Kingdom, India, Pakistan, Thailand, Russia, the United States, Bahrain and Kuwait. One flight on a route may operate while another is delayed or cancelled. Do not infer your status from the destination alone.

The Dubai Airports flight board and Zayed International Airport arrivals board are useful cross-checks. The airline remains the source for rebooking, refund and ticket-control decisions.

Check one flight in the right order

A flight number is more reliable than a route name. Start with the carrier operating the aircraft, especially on a codeshare.

1. Open the operating airline's flight-status page and enter the flight number and date.
2. Open the booking in the airline app or Manage My Booking. Look for a changed departure, replacement segment or request to choose an option.
3. Check email, text and app notifications. Confirm that the phone number and email on the reservation are current.
4. Cross-check the airport board. A status such as delayed, awaiting update or new time can change again.
5. Screenshot the original itinerary, latest status, replacement and any message about bags or airport arrival.
6. If an agent issued the ticket, contact the agent before cancelling or buying a replacement. The agent may control changes even when the airline operates the flight.

Use Etihad Flight Status, Emirates Flight Status or flydubai Operational Updates as appropriate. Search aggregators can help reveal a pattern, but they do not change a ticket.

Should you still go to the airport?

Follow the operating airline's instruction for your exact flight. A delay on the board is not permission to arrive after check-in or bag-drop closes. Airlines can shorten an estimated delay, replace an aircraft or restore the original time.

If the flight still shows as operating, complete online check-in when available and use the airline's stated arrival time. flydubai's current summer advisory tells departing passengers to arrive at least four hours before departure and notes that check-in closes 60 minutes before departure. That is flydubai guidance, not a universal rule for every airline at DXB.

Do not travel to the airport solely because a news story lists your route. Also do not stay at the hotel solely because another flight on the same route was cancelled. Get the status tied to your booking, then save it in case connectivity fails during the journey.

Protected connections and separate tickets are different problems

If all segments are on one ticket, the airline that disrupted the journey normally controls the replacement itinerary. Check the final destination as well as the next flight. A new first segment is not useful if the onward connection has disappeared or become impossible.

Etihad says that when both flights are operated by Etihad, it manages a missed connection and shows the amended details in Manage My Booking. If the onward flight is operated by another airline, Etihad tells the passenger to contact that carrier. Codeshares and interline tickets can be more complicated, so ask whether the whole ticket remains protected.

Separate tickets carry more risk. The second airline may treat a missed flight as a no-show even when the first airline caused the delay. Contact the second airline before its check-in or no-show deadline. Ask whether it will move the booking, but do not assume it must do so. Keep both ticket numbers, receipts and written replies for an insurance claim.

When the replacement uses a different UAE airport, confirm the transfer before accepting it. DXB, DWC, AUH and Sharjah are separate airports. A new itinerary can leave the passenger responsible for a road transfer, entry permission, baggage collection and another check-in.

Who handles rebooking and refunds?

The party that issued the ticket is the first practical contact. That usually means:

• the airline, if you booked on its website or app;
• the travel agent or online travel agency, if it issued the ticket;
• the package organizer, if the flight is part of a protected holiday package;
• each airline separately, if you built the trip from unrelated tickets.

Ask for the full proposed itinerary in writing before accepting it. Check airport codes, dates, local times, cabin, baggage allowance, transit permissions and every remaining coupon on the ticket. A replacement that looks earlier can create an overnight stop or move the passenger to another airport.

Do not press refund until you understand the consequence. On some bookings, accepting a refund ends the airline's duty to carry the passenger under that ticket. Local law, departure country, airline terms and the reason for the disruption can affect care and compensation. Save the cancellation notice and ask the airline or agent what applies to the actual itinerary.

Prepare checked bags for a changing route

Checked baggage can become the slowest part of a reroute. Before accepting a replacement, ask whether the bag will be retagged automatically, whether it must be collected in the UAE, and where to report it if it misses the new flight.

Keep these items in the cabin bag:

• passport, visas and printed or saved booking records;
• prescription medicine and essential medical items;
• phone, charging cable and a permitted power bank;
• keys, valuables and irreplaceable documents;
• one change of essential clothing;
• the bag tag receipt and a photograph of the checked bag.

If the bag does not arrive, report it before leaving the airport and keep the property irregularity report number. Photograph the bag carousel display and retain receipts for necessary purchases. Reimbursement rules differ, so buy what is reasonable rather than treating the delay as an unrestricted allowance.

Hotels, meals and insurance depend on the itinerary

A long delay does not produce one universal entitlement. The cause, departure country, airline, ticket type, connection protection and local passenger-rights law all matter. Regional security and airspace restrictions may also affect compensation even when care or rerouting duties still apply.

Ask the airline or agent whether it will provide a hotel, meal voucher or ground transport before paying. If immediate arrangements are unavailable, keep screenshots of the request and itemized receipts for reasonable expenses. Do not rely on a verbal promise without a case number.

For insurance, record the time the disruption became known and the reason stated by the airline. Policies can distinguish delay, cancellation, missed connection, abandonment and a change in government travel advice. Contact the insurer before buying an expensive replacement unless waiting would make the situation worse.

• ticket numbers and booking references;
• screenshots of flight status and airline messages;
• passport and visa copies stored securely;
• bag tags and photographs;
• airline, agent and insurer contact details;

• receipts and case numbers;

Mobile data during a UAE flight disruption

Airline apps, airport boards, hotel messages, maps and internet calls need a data path. Airport Wi-Fi may be busy or require another login when the passenger changes terminal. A data connection on the phone can keep those tools available between the hotel, road and airport.

Are Dubai and Abu Dhabi airports closed?

No. Official UAE travel advisories said Dubai and Zayed International airports were open when this guide was checked. Selected flights were still delayed, cancelled or rerouted, so an open airport does not confirm an individual booking.

How do I know whether my UAE flight is delayed?

Enter the flight number and date on the operating airline's status page. Then open the booking and cross-check the airport board. Use the operating flight number on a codeshare when possible.

Should I go to DXB or AUH if my flight shows delayed?

Follow the airline's instruction and its normal check-in deadline. Do not arrive late because the current estimate may change. If the airline tells you not to travel yet, save that message.

What happens if I miss a connection in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

On one protected ticket, ask the airline to rebook the full journey to the final destination. On separate tickets, contact the next airline before its no-show deadline because it may not protect the missed flight.

Will my checked bag move to the replacement flight?

Do not assume it will. Ask whether the bag has been retagged, track it in the airline app when available, and keep the tag receipt. Confirm whether you must collect it during a UAE transfer.
