WestJet strike 2026: cancellations, rebooking and your rights

WestJet has started reducing its schedule and cancelling selected flights before possible cabin crew job action on Sunday, August 2, 2026. The airline's current flexibility policy covers travel from July 30 through August 4. Passengers in that window can make one change or cancellation without an added fee, subject to the option shown for their booking.

Do not treat a no-fee voluntary cancellation as the same thing as an airline cancellation. If you cancel first, the fare rules and current waiver determine whether you receive a refund, Travel Bank credit or another option. If WestJet cancels the flight, Canadian passenger-protection rules require rebooking or a refund under the conditions explained below.

1. Open the booking and confirm the operating carrier for every segment. A WestJet flight number does not always mean WestJet operates the aircraft.
2. Check that the email address and mobile number on the reservation work where you are now.
3. Save the booking confirmation, ticket number, receipt, itinerary and current flight status offline.
4. Note whether every segment has the same reservation code. Separate bookings create a self-connection risk.
5. Find two acceptable alternative routes before the original flight is cancelled. Do not buy one yet unless the trip is time-critical and you accept the financial risk.
6. Read the exact change or cancellation result before confirming it. Look for the words "original form of payment" or "Travel Bank credit."
7. If a cruise, wedding, medical appointment or international connection cannot move, contact the relevant provider and insurer now.

The airline says it will contact affected passengers using the details attached to the booking. Third-party bookings may route updates through the travel agent or booking site instead.

Should you change or cancel before WestJet cancels your flight?

There is no single answer for every booking. The useful decision is whether certainty is worth giving up the protections that follow an airline cancellation.

The current WestJet advisory says passengers travelling from July 30 through August 4 can make a one-time change or cancellation without an additional fee. Fare difference, credit type and what happens to the return segment still need to be checked on the confirmation screen or with the booking provider.

What happens if WestJet cancels your flight?

Under Canada's Air Passenger Protection Regulations, a labour disruption is generally treated as outside the airline's control. Rebooking and refund duties still apply even when inconvenience compensation and standards of treatment do not.

WestJet is classed as a large airline. The Canadian Transportation Agency's current rebooking guide says a large airline must first rebook an outside-control cancellation on its next available flight or a commercial partner's flight from the original airport within 48 hours of the original departure time.

If that cannot be done within 48 hours, the airline must book the passenger on any airline. A nearby airport can be used when there is a reasonable option, with transport to that airport. If the new itinerary no longer meets the passenger's needs, the airline must offer a refund.

Do not press a voluntary cancel button merely because the status has changed to cancelled. First open the replacement itinerary and decide whether you want rebooking or a refund. Keep a screenshot of the cancellation reason and the options WestJet presented.

Does a refund have to go back to your card?

When Canadian rules entitle you to a refund, the CTA flight-cancellation guide says it must go to the person who bought the ticket using the original payment method. The airline may offer a voucher or credit instead, but the passenger must be told about the original-payment option and agree in writing to take the alternative.

A voluntary cancellation under WestJet's temporary flexibility policy is different. Its outcome can depend on the fare and the option displayed for the reservation. Read the final screen before confirming because a fee waiver does not automatically convert a non-refundable fare into cash.

What happens to a connecting flight?

A connection on one ticket is stronger than two bookings that happen to meet at the same airport. Canadian rules apply to flights to, from and within Canada, including connecting flights, and require the airline to complete the ticketed itinerary as soon as possible.

Check the reservation code:

• One code for the connected journey usually means the itinerary is handled together when a covered segment is disrupted.
• Different reservation codes usually mean a self-connection. The next airline may treat a missed departure as a no-show even when WestJet caused the first delay.
• A codeshare needs one more check: the operating carrier, shown as "operated by" on the booking, controls the flight that actually leaves.

If the bookings are separate, contact the second airline, hotel, car-rental company or cruise operator before the no-show deadline. Ask for the answer in writing. WestJet's own voluntary-change terms say it is not responsible for a separately booked onward connection.

What if you booked through Expedia, a travel agent or another airline?

Start with the business that issued the ticket. WestJet advises passengers with a third-party booking to contact the agent, airline partner or travel site because direct notifications and self-service options may differ.

Give the agent the reservation code, ticket number, original flight, acceptable replacement routes and the current WestJet advisory. Ask these questions plainly:

1. Has the airline cancelled the flight, or is it still scheduled?
2. Is the offered change voluntary or an involuntary rebooking?
3. Will the full connected itinerary remain on one ticket?
4. Is the proposed refund cash, card reversal, agency credit or airline credit?
5. What happens to the return flight if only the outbound segment changes?

Save the chat transcript and case number. A verbal promise without a record is hard to use later.

Are hotels, meals and compensation covered?

Do not assume every strike-related expense will be reimbursed. The CTA classifies labour issues as outside the airline's control under Canadian rules. In that category, rebooking and refunds apply, but assistance such as meals and accommodation and compensation for inconvenience are not automatically required.

The reason assigned to your specific cancellation still matters. Ask WestJet to state it in writing and save every receipt. A cancellation after the strike ends, for example, may receive a different operational reason from a flight directly affected by job action. Submit any eligible claim through the WestJet interruption and claims page.

Travel insurance may cover prepaid bookings, accommodation or a replacement journey, but policies differ. The Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association advises travelers to check their own policy and contact the insurer. A policy bought after the disruption became known may exclude it.

Do European or UK rules apply to a WestJet cancellation?

They can, depending on where the affected flight departs. Canadian rules are not always the only rules in play.

The EU's official air-passenger page says EU protections apply to a flight departing the EU for a non-EU country on either an EU or non-EU airline. It also says an internal airline-staff strike is not automatically an extraordinary circumstance. Iceland, Norway and Switzerland are included in that framework.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority says UK protections apply to a flight departing a UK airport on any airline. A WestJet flight from London or Edinburgh can therefore have a different rights analysis from a WestJet flight departing Canada.

Coverage for a flight into Europe or the UK is narrower when a non-European airline operates it. Use the departure country, operating carrier and complete ticketed route when checking the official regulator. Do not submit duplicate compensation claims under different systems for the same disruption.

Should you buy your own replacement flight?

Buying another ticket can protect a wedding, cruise or fixed connection, but reimbursement is not guaranteed merely because the replacement was reasonable. WestJet and the CTA describe an airline-led rebooking process. They do not promise to repay any flight a passenger buys independently.

Before paying:

• Ask WestJet or the issuing agent to rebook the itinerary.
• Record the routes offered and why they do not meet the trip's needs.
• Ask the insurer whether prior approval is required.
• Prefer a refundable backup when the price is acceptable.
• Check whether cancelling the original outbound would also cancel the return.

If you buy a replacement, keep the fare conditions, payment receipt, cancellation notice and every message about failed rebooking. Those documents do not guarantee recovery, but a claim without them is weaker.

What should you do at the airport?

Check the flight before leaving. WestJet's current manage-booking notice tells passengers to verify status before departure for the airport. If the flight is cancelled and no new itinerary is confirmed, the airport is rarely the best first place to solve it.

If the flight still shows as operating, follow the normal check-in and bag-drop deadlines unless WestJet tells you otherwise. A strike threat does not waive those deadlines. Keep medicine, identification, chargers and one change of clothes in carry-on baggage in case checked luggage and the passenger take different routes.

At the airport, write down the time, desk location and name or identifier of anyone who gives material advice. Photograph the departure screen and keep receipts for necessary expenses. Use only contact details from WestJet's own site or app. The airline warns that scammers buy search ads with false phone numbers during disruptions.

Keep flight updates and rebooking tools working

An international traveler may need mobile data as soon as a cancellation email arrives.
