WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 visitor guide: passes, metro and Expo

WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 is open, but the public competition and Expo days run from September 23 to 26 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center. Admission is free only for people who completed online registration before it closed. Walk-in registration is not available. On Wednesday, September 23, do not follow a normal Line 2 plan before noon: the two Line 2 stations beside the venue will be closed and trains will pass through without stopping.

Registered visitors should bring the original passport or identity document used for registration, keep the e-pass ready, and download the official venue map before leaving. The easiest opening-day approach is Line 17 to National Exhibition and Convention Center Station, or the temporary free shuttle loop if your journey still brings you to the affected Line 2 area.

The decision that matters most: if you do not already have a valid visitor e-pass, do not travel to the NECC expecting to register at the door. If you are registered for September 23, rebuild the morning route around Line 17 or the official shuttle because the nearby Line 2 stations are closed until noon.

Can you still get a WorldSkills Shanghai visitor pass?

No. The organizer's visitor registration page states that registration was online only, closed on September 14 and does not allow walk-ins. A page that still explains how registration worked is not evidence that the form remains open.

If you registered, the date selected during the form was for planning. The organizer says a valid visitor e-pass permits entry on any or all competition days. Keep the e-pass available offline as well as in the account or message where it arrived.

International visitors must carry the original passport used during registration. A photograph or photocopy may help with records, but the organizer specifically asks for the original document for identity verification. The e-pass and passport details need to match.

Same-day re-entry is allowed after an initial successful entry. Ask staff how the exit and re-entry process is recorded before leaving the controlled area, especially if you plan to meet someone or collect something outside.

Which day should you visit WorldSkills Shanghai?

September 23: opening energy with the hardest morning journey

Wednesday is the first competition and Expo day. It starts at 10:00, one hour later than the following days, and it carries the largest transport exception. From the start of metro service until noon, Line 2 trains will not stop at National Exhibition and Convention Center Station or Panxiang Road/Shanghai National Accounting Institute Station.

Choose September 23 if the first-day atmosphere matters and you can use Line 17 or the shuttle plan. Do not choose it merely because a normal map result shows Line 2 close to the halls.

September 24 and 25: full competition days with normal venue hours

Thursday and Friday run from 09:00 to 17:00. These are the clearest choices for a full visit without the September 23 station closure or the final competition-day pressure.

The official app can show skill schedules, venue directions and current Try-a-Skill wait information. Pick two competition areas and one Expo activity before arrival. Treat everything else as optional.

September 26: final competition day

Saturday is the final public competition and Expo day. It may suit weekend visitors, but it is not the closing ceremony day. The closing ceremony is September 27 at the World Expo Cultural Center and should not be confused with normal public access to the competition halls.

Final-day interest does not guarantee that every skill runs until 17:00. Check the official schedule for the specific competition before making a late-afternoon trip.

What can visitors actually do at the competition and Expo?

The scale is the reason to plan selectively. WorldSkills brings about 1,400 competitors from 73 countries and regions across 64 skills. The contest areas span fields such as manufacturing, construction, transport, information technology, social and personal services, and creative work.

The official Expo guide lists 300 exhibition and experience booths across about 50,000 square metres. Hall 5.2 is the main Expo space, while other activities extend across the centre. More than 100 hands-on activities are linked to the competition skills.

For visitors, the most practical choices are:

• Watch two or three live competitions where the work is easy to follow from the spectator area.
• Use Hall 5.2 as the main Expo stop rather than walking every corridor without a plan.
• Check Try-a-Skill waiting times in the official app before crossing the venue.
• Reserve a Next-Gen Makers Workshop place in advance if a visitor aged 10 to 18 wants a one-hour session. Places are limited.
• Use the 80-point check-in activity only if it fits the route. Completing a venue-wide collection can consume most of the visit.

The Expo also includes live performances, traditional craft demonstrations, a career-guidance station and a bazaar with more than 30 stalls. These are useful breaks between competition sessions, but they should not replace the skills you came to see.

How to get to the NECC on September 23

Use Line 17 for direct station access

Line 17 remains the most direct rail choice during the opening-morning Line 2 closure. Use National Exhibition and Convention Center Station on Line 17, then follow event signs and the official venue map to the correct entrance.

Do not assume that the same station name means every line is serving it. On September 23 before noon, Line 2 will pass through its NECC station without stopping, while Line 17 remains part of the event transport plan.

Use the free temporary shuttle loop when needed

Shanghai's official WorldSkills transport notice provides a free loop connecting the Panxiang Road Line 2 area, the NECC Line 2 area and the NECC Line 17 station. Shuttles are planned every five to ten minutes or when full.

This is a contingency route, not a promise of a zero-wait connection. Allow time for walking, finding the boarding point and queuing. Follow event staff rather than an old screenshot if the stop moves.

Avoid a tight airport or rail connection before the visit

The NECC is close to the Hongqiao transport complex, but the September 23 controls make a short morning transfer less predictable. Keep luggage at the hotel or an official storage point because large bags also conflict with event entry rules.

If arriving through Pudong Airport, treat the venue as a separate cross-city journey. Do not plan an international landing, immigration, luggage collection and a timed morning entry as if the airport were beside the halls.

Leaving the venue and using late metro service

From 15:00 to 19:00 on September 23 to 26, event shuttles are planned from parking area P5 to two useful onward points:

• Hongqiao Railway Station and Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2
• Zhongchun Road Station on Line 9

These services are subject to on-site arrangements. Confirm the queue and destination before boarding. Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 is not Pudong Airport, and a shuttle to one should never be treated as transport to the other.

On September 24 to 26, Lines 1, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 13 will extend service, with the last trains leaving their origin stations at midnight. This does not mean every connection remains possible until midnight. Check the last useful interchange for the complete route.

September 27 has separate extra service on Lines 1, 2, 10 and 17. The official notice says those extra late trains will not allow transfers at interchange stations. That matters mainly to accredited guests or others attending closing-day activity, because public competition visits end September 26.

Should you drive or reserve parking?

Public transport is the safer default. The venue is large, temporary road controls are in force, and event parking is not a casual first-come option.

The current city guidance says parking reservations use Suishenxing or the Shanghai Parking WeChat mini-program and require a printed permit. A successful map route does not prove that a car has permission to enter a controlled parking area.

If driving is necessary, complete the reservation before departure, print the permit and check the approach road again. Keep a rail fallback. A taxi or ride-hailing car can still meet access controls and a distant drop-off point.

The official WorldSkills Shanghai app guide is unusually useful because it combines:

• competition schedules for all 64 skills
• hall and facility maps
• directions between venue points
• Try-a-Skill instructions and current wait information
• workshop reservations
• Expo, performance and conference details
• official news and Shanghai city services

The service is also available through WeChat and Alipay mini-programs. Test whichever version you intend to use before entering the hall. An app that requires a fresh login, identity check or mini-program permission at the gate is not yet travel-ready.

Download the official high-resolution visitor map as a second layer. The PDF remains readable if indoor coverage is slow and is easier to share with a group than a sequence of screenshots.

For wider Shanghai travel, keep a locally useful map, a translation tool with offline language files, the metro route and the hotel address in Chinese. Save both airport names if the itinerary uses one of them.

WorldSkills Shanghai prohibited items and bag rules

The event publishes a detailed competition venue prohibited-items list. The rules go beyond obvious dangerous items.

Visitors should pay particular attention to these restrictions:

• luggage larger than 50 cm by 36 cm
• tripods and monopods, except for authorized media
• glass containers
• aerosol containers
• long-handled umbrellas and other long or sharp objects
• drinks in containers over 500 ml, with stated exceptions for infant and child beverages
• drones, kites and other flying devices or models
• bicycles, roller skates, skateboards and scooters that are not mobility aids

Small handheld camera supports are allowed under the published rule, but commercial equipment and items that disrupt operations can still be restricted. Carry a compact day bag, leave luggage at the hotel, and use a short folding umbrella.

The site allows service animals such as guide dogs while prohibiting other animals. Visitors carrying medicine or medical equipment that might resemble a restricted item should keep it in original packaging and seek organizer guidance before entry rather than relying on a security-line explanation.

Accessibility, language and family planning

Shanghai says the transport operation includes bilingual guidance, accessibility support, electronic wayfinding and translation devices. That is useful, but a broad service statement does not establish the exact step-free route from every platform to every competition area.

Visitors who need a wheelchair route, rest seating, a quiet area or other assistance should use the official map and ask event staff at the first information point. Build fewer hall changes into the day. The NECC covers a large footprint, so walking distance matters even when each individual route is step-free.

Families should choose skills that children can understand visually and use the Expo's hands-on activities as breaks. The one-hour Next-Gen Makers Workshop is aimed at ages 10 to 18 and needs advance reservation when space is available. Younger children may get more from short Try-a-Skill stops than from a full day of judging.

Carry food that complies with entry rules, agree on a meeting point and place the hotel name plus a contact number in each child's pocket. Do not use a hall number alone as the reunion plan.

Add the WorldSkills Museum only if the travel time works

The WorldSkills Museum is at 389 Anpu Road in Yangpu District, not inside the NECC. It has extended 09:00 to 21:00 hours from September 22 to 27, free admission and no advance registration during this period.

Free shuttles run between the NECC and museum from September 23 to 26, but the ride takes about one hour and 15 minutes each way. The museum-bound departures are listed at 09:00, 10:00, 12:00 and 13:00 from the NECC North Square bus parking area. Return buses leave at 10:30, 11:30, 14:30 and 15:30.

Boarding requires WorldSkills accreditation or a visitor registration QR code. That makes the shuttle useful for registered visitors, not an alternative route for someone without a pass.

Combining the museum and competition in one day costs at least two and a half hours in shuttle travel before waiting or visiting. A separate evening or another date is the better choice when the competitions are the priority.

Mobile data for WorldSkills Shanghai 2026

The event is unusually phone-dependent. The e-pass, official app, Try-a-Skill waits, map, metro changes, parking reservation, payment mini-programs and group messages may all sit on the same device. Downloading the map and pass reduces the risk, but it does not replace a working connection for live changes.

A China Roaming eSIM can be installed on a compatible phone before departure while the usual SIM remains available for its normal number. The public China catalog listed 34 packages when checked on September 22. One 1GB, 7-day plan was listed at USD 1.40 and one 10GB, 30-day plan at USD 11.70. Both public records named China Mobile, showed 3G, 4G and 5G service, and supported top-up. Current product cards remain the authority because price and availability can change.

That plan-level disclosure is Roaming eSIM's practical advantage over choosing a vague data offer at the last minute: travelers can compare allowance, validity, retail price, speed label, supported operator names and top-up status before buying. Roaming eSIM also lists 24/7 support. It does not guarantee capacity inside a crowded hall, provide a local phone number unless the selected package says so, or promise access to every app under local network rules.
