York Christmas Market 2026: dates, Tuesdays and travel

York Christmas Market runs from Thursday, November 12, to Monday, December 21, 2026, on Parliament Street and St Sampson's Square. It opens Wednesday to Monday, 10:30am-7pm, and closes every Tuesday. The final day finishes at 5pm. Choose a trading day before booking a market-focused trip.
The official Visit York listing confirms the six-day week. Tuesday can still work for a York city break, but it is the wrong day if the Christmas chalets are the main reason you are travelling. The council's October 28 announcement also sets out vehicle-access changes that matter if your accommodation, parking or drop-off is inside the protected streets.
Opening dates and the five Tuesday rest days
| Date or day | Market arrangement |
|---|---|
| November 12-December 21 | The 2026 season |
| Wednesday to Monday | Normally 10:30am-7pm |
| Tuesday, November 17 and 24 | Closed |
| Tuesday, December 1, 8 and 15 | Closed |
| Monday, December 21 | 10:30am-5pm |
| After December 21 | This market season has ended |
Do not book a Christmas Eve or New Year trip expecting these chalets to continue. Other York events have their own dates and tickets.
If you are staying Monday to Wednesday, use Monday or Wednesday for the market and Tuesday for another part of the city. If you only have Tuesday available, decide whether the rest of York is enough for the trip before paying for transport or a room.
What to expect, and how much of a day to give it
The market is a city-centre shopping visit, with wooden chalets selling gifts, crafts, food and drinks. Visit York's market page says more than 80% of traders are from Yorkshire. It is a useful place to browse regional makers, rather than a programme of children's rides or activities.
For a first visit, leave a flexible couple of hours for browsing and a food stop, then decide whether you want more. That is a suggested pace, not a promised visit duration. Queues, weather, mobility needs and children's interest will change it.
A manageable plan is to start at one end of Parliament Street, look through a few stalls before buying food, and continue into St Sampson's Square. Choose a separate indoor lunch or break if your group needs a seat. Do not assume a busy food stall will have seating available.
With younger children, make the market one part of the day. Agree on a small shopping or food budget, keep essential items accessible in the pram, and stop before everyone is tired. For a wider trip, our United Kingdom with kids guide covers destination choices beyond a market afternoon.
Tuesday is not a closure of York
The council's October 28 notice says the Shambles Market, shops, restaurants and other city businesses continue during the Tuesday rest days. The Christmas Market and Shambles Market are different markets; use the right name when checking a booking or meeting someone.
For a Tuesday visit, plan around the Shambles area, independent shops and a booked meal, then choose any ticketed attraction from its own current calendar. A city-wide statement that attractions remain open is not a guarantee that every museum opens on Tuesdays or that a particular tour has space.
An overnight visitor can also use Tuesday for a slower morning or an outing elsewhere, then return to the Christmas stalls on Wednesday. There is no need to fill the rest day with replacement shopping if the group would rather do something different.
Getting there by train or Park & Ride
If arriving by rail, plan to York station, then check the walking route to Parliament Street or St Sampson's Square. Allow for luggage, crossings and busy streets rather than treating the station arrival time as the start of a timed attraction booking. Check your train operator's engineering notices for the exact travel date.
For drivers, the council's Park & Ride page lists six sites. Parking is free; the bus journey has its own fare. Choose a site on your approach to York instead of driving across the city simply to reach another car park.
The current iTravel York fare table lists a GBP4 standard return. Up to three children aged sixteen or under can travel free with an accompanying adult boarding at a Park & Ride site with an eligible ticket. For two paying adults and up to three qualifying children, that makes the standard return-bus total GBP8, before any other spending.
The site-to-centre return fare should not be assumed to apply to a new journey starting in the city centre or at an intermediate stop. Check the ticket you need for the direction and boarding point.
Before leaving the car, save:
- Your site name and bus service.
- The city-centre stop for the return journey.
- The last return departure for your date.
The route-specific timetable page warns that operating times differ and overnight parking is not permitted. Do not copy a last-bus time from another route or leave the car overnight after deciding to stay for dinner.
Vehicle access and Blue Badge planning
The 2026 council access instructions restrict ordinary vehicle access to the protected footstreets from 10:30am to 7:30pm on market days. The stalls normally close at 7pm, but that is not the time cars can enter again.
Ask your hotel or parking provider how you will reach its actual entrance, unload luggage and leave. A private parking reservation inside the barriers does not remove the access restriction. Arrange a suitable meeting point outside the protected area if a pickup cannot enter.
Tuesday has different arrangements: the Goodramgate, King's Square and Colliergate loop is available to Blue Badge holders during the usual 10:30am-5pm footstreet period, excluding Church Street. The Blake Street and Lendal route remains closed during footstreet hours throughout the market period. Do not apply the Tuesday exception to a trading day.
Check the council's designated parking and access map for your needs before departure. Blue Badge access, a suitable parking space and the ability to reach a stall are separate parts of the visit.
Quieter visits, toilets and places to pause
The organizer's accessibility guide lists a music-free period from 10:30am to noon. Use it on an opening day, not Tuesday. Music-free does not mean empty, silent or free from queues.
For a break, the guide lists the Quiet Oasis at St Sampson's Centre, Church Street, Monday to Saturday, 10am-4pm. Do not assume it is available on Sunday or for the full evening market session.
The nearest listed standard and accessible toilets are on Silver Street, about 40 metres from the market. The guide also identifies nearby Changing Places facilities and notes that accessible toilets require a RADAR key. Confirm the facility and opening time you need. Its Guildhall provision is specifically December 1-20, 10am-4pm, so it is not a November or evening fallback.
Expect some uneven pavement around tree roots. The organizer describes counter-service stalls or temporary ramps, but individual access needs still deserve planning. Contact [email protected] about market access before travelling if you need clarification.
Apps, saved information and mobile data
The First Bus app supports route planning, live bus tracking and mobile tickets. Use the iTravel York route list to identify your service, then keep the return stop and timetable available. Download an offline street map and save accommodation details before leaving.
If your home mobile plan does not include suitable UK data, OpenSim United Kingdom plans provide a small prepaid allowance for checking buses and messaging your group away from Wi-Fi. On November 5, the public catalog listed 1GB for seven days at USD1.14 and 3GB for fifteen days at USD3.00, both fixed-data plans supporting top-ups. A short city break may not need a large bundle; use an existing included allowance if it already meets your needs.
Mobile data does not reserve a seat, extend the last bus or guarantee reception in a crowd. Keep tickets available and agree on a meeting place that does not depend on a last-minute message.
Check the travel data calculator, phone compatibility guide and installation-timing guide. If you are combining northern city breaks, the separate Manchester Christmas Markets guide covers its different dates and transport arrangements.
Sources and updates
Dates and trading hours follow Visit York; vehicle restrictions follow City of York Council. Use the linked organizer accessibility guidance and iTravel York fares and timetables for practical arrangements. Changes to trading days, the December 21 finish, access restrictions, facilities or return-bus services require an update here. Later-season plans should use the organizer's next confirmed programme rather than assume the 2026 pattern repeats.
