Zozobra is a large marionette known as Old Man Gloom. People submit written worries, called glooms, which are placed inside before the figure is burned. The evening is a staged show with music, dancers, crowd participation, the Fire Spirit, the burn and a fireworks finale.

This is not an open bonfire or a place where spectators bring anything to burn. The organizer prohibits lighters, flares, sparklers, fuel, camp stoves, sky lanterns and other flames. Submitted glooms go through the organizer's process.

The 2026 figure uses a King George theme tied to the United States' 250th anniversary. That theme changes the costume, not the practical plan. Visitors still enter a fenced outdoor venue, pass security and stand or sit on field surfaces for several hours.

When to arrive at Zozobra

Before 6 p.m. gives the easiest margin

Gates open at 4 p.m. and the official program begins at 6 p.m. An arrival in that window leaves time for the South Capitol shuttle, screening, the walk from the regular shuttle drop-off and finding a viewing position before darkness.

Do not treat 8:45 p.m. as an arrival target

The current organizer FAQ says gates close at 8:45 p.m. and recommends arrival by 8 p.m. Other organizer text tells guests to be inside by 8:30 p.m. Premium ticket holders also need enough time to reach their named section after security.

A clock time for the burn appears on some competing pages, but the City of Santa Fe notice deliberately says after dark, weather and wind permitting. Plan for the entire evening rather than racing a guessed ignition time.

Tickets and the entry route

Use the current official ticket guide for availability and event-day pricing. A resale screenshot is not an entry plan. Save the live ticket to the phone wallet if supported, take a screenshot that includes the code, and keep the purchaser name and order number in a separate note.

Children aged 10 and under are free only in General Admission when accompanied by an adult. Premium viewing areas require a ticket for every attendee regardless of age. There is no dependable public parking at Fort Marcy. The official park-and-ride location is the South Capitol Rail Runner Station lot near Cordova Road and St. Francis Drive. Regular buses begin running at 5 p.m.

The published final departure times do not agree:

Use 8:30 p.m. as the hard planning limit, not the aim. A passenger still needs a ticket, screening and room on a bus. The regular shuttle drops passengers near Washington Avenue and Paseo de Peralta, followed by a walk to the venue.

After the show, return buses load near the same downtown edge of the event area. Confirm the exact stop when getting off and save a map pin. Organizer pages say return service begins after the lights come back on or about 30 minutes after the event. Staff instructions on the night take priority.

Driving, rideshare and road closures

Bishop's Lodge Road closes between Artist Road and Paseo de Peralta at noon. Its northern section to Valley Drive closes at 4 p.m. A larger set of hard closures begins around Old Taos Highway, Artist and Hyde Park Road, Paseo de Peralta, Washington Avenue, Hillside Avenue and nearby streets from 5 to 5:30 p.m.

The city's complete closure table and maps should control the final route. A navigation app can continue offering a street after police have closed it.

Do not request a rideshare at Fort Marcy. Use a pickup point outside the pedestrian and road-control area, then confirm that the driver can reach it. If the group used the free shuttle, returning to South Capitol is usually clearer than inventing a pickup location in the dark.

The city expects the show to finish around 10:15 p.m. if weather allows. Roads may begin reopening 45 to 75 minutes later, one street at a time. A car in the Convention Center garage or another downtown space can remain trapped even after the finale. Do not book a fixed pickup, dinner or airport transfer around a 10:15 departure.

Zozobra bag policy and prohibited items

Only clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches are allowed. A one-gallon clear freezer bag also fits the published rule. The organizer allows a small 4.5 by 6.5-inch clutch or one-pocket fanny pack, both subject to inspection.

Childcare and medical supplies must also be presented in clear bags and will be inspected. Food can be carried in a compliant clear bag with plastic utensils. Current organizer wording about water containers is not perfectly consistent, so the safest approach is to arrive without an outside drink and use the free water stations and cups inside.

Leave these items behind:

Going to Zozobra with children

Zozobra can work for a child who is comfortable with darkness, a large crowd, loud music, smoke and fireworks. It is a poor place to test those reactions for the first time. The stroller ban also means an adult may need to carry a tired child through the venue and back to the shuttle.

The southeast part of the venue has a family viewing area. On arrival, visit the Find My Family booth in Magers Field. Families can register children and collect wristbands linked to the parent's name and phone number. The booth reunites separated children with parents; it is not childcare.

Use a backup that still works when a phone does not. Put the adult's number and the words "Find My Family booth" on paper in the child's pocket. Show the child the booth and identify uniformed staff. Pick one fixed meeting point inside and one outside the venue.

Current organizer guidance asks guests to board by 8 p.m.; some ticket text shows an 8:15 p.m. operating cutoff, while the transport page says the last ADA shuttle leaves at 8:30 p.m. Use the earlier time and contact the organizer before travel if the distinction affects entry.

The General Admission area includes grass, dirt and outdoor obstructions. A closer shuttle does not make every viewing surface level. Premium sections differ in seating and distance from the accessible drop-off, so ask which ticket matches the visitor's mobility needs before paying.

The organizer requests one companion per ADA shuttle rider so more passengers can use the service. The companion also needs an event ticket. Return ADA buses may wait until pedestrian traffic clears, even when the show has ended.

Weather, fire and altitude

The burn is designed for an outdoor field and is subject to operational fire controls. Rain alone does not automatically cancel the event, but wind and weather can move the burn earlier or later. Check the National Weather Service Albuquerque office and the organizer on Friday afternoon.

Santa Fe's high elevation can make a long afternoon and evening more tiring for visitors arriving from near sea level. Eat before the busiest entry period, use the venue's water stations and avoid treating alcohol as hydration.
