Aesthetica Film Festival 2026: passes, free events and York

Aesthetica Film Festival runs in York from November 4 to 8, 2026. Choose the days and sessions you want before buying a pass: films, music, children's workshops and free public art do not all use the same admission arrangements. Leave time to collect your physical ticket and move between venues.
The 2026 programme announcement describes more than 300 films alongside games, VR, talks and live events. That gives a visitor plenty of choice, but it also makes an unplanned day difficult. You cannot watch a screening, attend a panel and join a workshop that all start together.
Start with one reason to come: a film programme, a particular industry session, Saturday's music or a family workshop. Build the rest of the visit around it.
Compare the pass with the days you will actually use
The official ticket page lists these prices:
| Ticket | Listed price | Main use |
|---|---|---|
| Single screening | GBP 8.50 | One screening; no masterclass access |
| One-day pass | GBP 39 | One chosen festival day |
| Two-day pass | GBP 65 | Two chosen days |
| Unlimited pass | GBP 120 | All five festival days |
Two day passes cost GBP 78, so the two-day pass saves GBP 13. Three day passes cost GBP 117, slightly less than unlimited access. Compare your dates, not just the word "unlimited."
The family day pass is GBP 99 for two adults and up to two children. York residents have a GBP 29.25 day-pass option, with proof required at collection. Opening Night needs a separate GBP 15 ticket. These tickets are listed as non-refundable; check the current product, availability and total before paying.
If your film or game is selected, read your accreditation information first. The organizer's filmmaker FAQ explains that selected filmmakers receive details about claiming complimentary passes. Do not buy duplicates before checking what your own package covers.
Collect your ticket before your first session
The 2026 arrival instructions say to exchange the emailed receipt for a paper ticket or lanyard at City Screen Picturehouse, York, YO1 9QL. The Hub Desk operates November 4-8, 09:30-18:00.
An evening event does not mean the collection desk stays open until that event begins. Arrive during desk hours, or ask the festival how to collect before booking a late arrival.
Film screenings use first-come seating rather than advance reservations. Masterclasses, VR and Games Labs, workshops and some networking events need pre-registration, using a receipt reference and a pass valid that day. A pass is not a reserved seat at everything.
Use the event-registration filters to check your chosen date and event type. Save confirmations separately from the pass receipt, and leave a gap before the next booking. A screening finishing at one venue is not the same as being ready to sit down at another.
Saturday combines film and music, but check the exact event
The Music at Aesthetica programme centres on Saturday, November 7, at York Theatre Royal. It includes Anna Rice's scoring discussion at 10:30-11:30 in the Studio, a music-jury panel at 12:00-13:00 in the Main House, and emerging-artist performances during the afternoon and evening.
Later sessions include Sync in Focus at 15:45-16:45, Jess Iszatt at 17:00-18:00, and a Dilettante performance and Q&A at 21:00-21:45, all listed in the Main House. Check registrations and the running order before making a tight train connection.
The New Music Stage announcement confirms access for Unlimited, Saturday Day and Music at Aesthetica pass holders. You do not automatically need another music ticket because the event has its own booking page.
Other theatre evenings need separate attention. Beyond the Frame includes *Nosferatu* with Chris Green's live score on November 5 and Seann Walsh on November 6. Check the specific theatre ticket and pass terms for those shows; Saturday's music inclusion is not proof that every evening performance is included.
You can experience the public art without buying a film pass
The Radical Listening media-art trail runs November 4-8 and is free, with no ticket required. Its three locations provide a manageable city-centre route:
| Location | Artist |
|---|---|
| Exhibition Square, outside York Art Gallery | Squidsoup |
| York Theatre Royal | Steve Messam |
| King's Square | Being Now Here |
Keep this distinct from paid screenings and booked sessions inside festival venues. Free outdoor art can be the main purpose of a short visit, not merely something to rush past between films.
Check the current trail page for installation details and operating arrangements before leaving. The festival dates alone do not confirm that every installation is available at every hour. Bring a weatherproof layer for the outdoor sections and allow a break indoors if you are combining the trail with a longer day.
The free EXPO is on Thursday and Friday
The UNESCO City of Media Arts EXPO takes place at De Grey Rooms on November 5-6, 09:00-21:00. Entry is free and does not require a festival pass.
It brings together around 40 creative companies working in areas such as film, games, animation, design and XR. For someone exploring those industries, it offers a different kind of visit from sitting through a block of shorts. The accompanying creative-business workshops have their own details to check.
A Thursday or Friday itinerary could pair time at the EXPO with one preselected screening or registered session. That leaves space for conversations rather than treating every stand as another item to tick off. Do not buy a film pass solely because you think it is necessary to enter the EXPO.
Filmmaker networking has session-specific rules
Film Hub North's current programme illustrates why individual listings matter. Its November 4 roundtable, 16:00-17:00 at SPARK, 17-21 Piccadilly, is listed as fully booked, with a waiting list. That session is free and does not require a festival pass, but free does not mean you can simply turn up.
Its Story Exchange mixer on November 5, 12:00-13:30, is at York Theatre Royal's Upper Foyer and requires a valid festival pass and signup. Those are different arrangements from the roundtable.
If meeting other filmmakers is your priority, choose a session where you have a reason to contribute and make time to see other people's work. Keep an introduction short, ask about the project in front of you and follow up later. No festival pass guarantees a collaborator, commission or job.
Children's workshops need their own tickets
The children's workshop programme is separate from a festival pass, including the family pass. A child does not need an additional festival pass just to attend one of these workshops.
All listed children's workshops take place at York St John University Creative Centre, with separate groups for ages 7-10 and 11-14. Options cover filmmaking, game creation, stop-motion and screen acting on November 7 and 8.
For example, filmmaking for ages 7-10 is listed for Saturday 10:00-12:00 or Sunday 14:00-16:00. Stop-motion for ages 11-14 uses those same two time windows. Choose the child's age group as well as the activity; identical start times are not interchangeable bookings.
Check remaining places, the workshop price and adult attendance or collection arrangements before paying. These are not advertised as toddler activities.
For films, check each programme's age guidance and content warnings. For the wider holiday, our UK with kids guide can help you avoid making the entire trip depend on one afternoon's festival activity.
Check access for the room, not just the venue name
City Screen's current access information describes lift access to the second-floor screens and dedicated wheelchair spaces. Contact the venue about your specific screening and space requirements before arrival. A building's facilities do not establish that every festival film has captions or audio description.
York Theatre Royal lists level foyer entrances, lifts and wheelchair spaces in its Main House and Studio. Request the space when booking and confirm the room, assistance and any companion arrangements with the festival or venue.
Avoid relying on undated festival search results about virtual access. The festival's access page still refers to the 2022 hybrid edition. That is not confirmation of a 2026 online viewing option or the current year's captioning provision.
Plan the return journey before filling the evening
Check your exact arrival and return dates in the rail operator's journey planner. In particular, TransPennine Express's engineering notices distinguish York works on October 24-November 1 from separate changes on November 7-8. Do not apply the earlier date range to every festival day.
The November 7-8 notice includes diversions between Manchester and Sheffield without a Stockport stop, plus replacement buses between Liverpool Lime Street and Warrington Central on November 8. Whether those affect you depends on the journey you book, not simply the word "York" in a disruption headline.
For a day trip, work backwards from your last usable train. Include time to leave the venue, collect belongings and reach the station. For an airport connection, check the full itinerary and keep a buffer rather than assuming a direct service will operate.
Save a map linking City Screen, York Theatre Royal, De Grey Rooms and your accommodation. Use the rail operator's app for journey changes and your mapping app for the actual venue entrance. Check the local weather forecast shortly before travel; a November date is not itself a forecast.
Keep booking details available between venues
Download the pass receipt, reservation confirmations, venue map and return-journey details before leaving Wi-Fi. A phone signal cannot help if the battery is empty, and online proof does not replace the required physical ticket collection.
For international visitors whose usual plan does not include enough UK data, OpenSim UK plans offer an allowance for checking transport changes, retrieving confirmations and arranging to meet companions. The public catalog checked on October 16 listed 5 GB for 30 days at USD 4.76, with top-up available for that plan. Confirm the selected plan's current price and terms before purchase.
If your existing service already covers the trip, another package may be unnecessary. OpenSim does not reserve festival seats or guarantee reception in every auditorium. Save essentials offline and keep phones quiet during screenings.
Use the travel data calculator, check phone compatibility and review installation timing before departure.
Sources and updates before November 4
OpenSim editorial team checked the linked festival, partner, venue and rail information, and the public OpenSim catalog, for this guide. Ticket prices are the organizer's listed amounts, not a guarantee of remaining inventory.
Recheck before booking and again before departure for changes to pass terms, workshop places, the roundtable waiting list, venue access, trail arrangements and train services. After November 8, retain this as the 2026 guide rather than presenting its programme as the next edition.
