Wiener Konzerthaus facade on Lothringerstrasse in September 2013

Wien Modern runs October 30-November 30, 2026, across Vienna, with contemporary music, performances and sound installations. Choose the events you want before buying a pass: some productions are included directly, others need additional tickets, and there are free events you can attend without one. Check the individual venue and your journey, especially if arriving from Vienna Airport.

This is a different outing from a concert of familiar Mozart or Strauss pieces. The 39th edition explores ecosystems through music and sound, including the Danube, installations and performances outside conventional concert formats. If you are curious but unfamiliar with the composers, one carefully chosen event is a reasonable introduction.

Which kind of Wien Modern visit suits you?

Your preferenceA starting pointWhat to check
An orchestra with a contemporary programmeThe October 30 opening at Wiener KonzerthausPerformance content, admission and room layout
Listening without committing to a concert seatAnnea Lockwood's installation at the MAKMuseum admission and opening hours
A low-cost first visitA specifically listed free eventCapacity and any registration requirement
Several concerts during a longer stayFestival pass and individual ticket comparisonExtra admissions and the dates you will be in Vienna
A family performanceAusflug / Utflukt at Dschungel WienAge guidance and the selected public performance

Browse the festival programme by your travel dates, then open the event itself. Check whether it is a timed performance or an installation with visiting hours. A long opening window does not mean a continuous seated concert, and a short event does not automatically suit children.

Listen to an artist's work before committing to several evenings. Give yourself permission to choose a sound installation or discussion instead of a full orchestral programme. The useful question is whether you want that particular experience, rather than whether it is the most famous building on your itinerary.

Festival pass: what is included and what costs extra?

The 2026 pass costs €140, or €56 for visitors under 30. A €112 rate applies to specified subscription or benefit-card holders. Check the named eligibility conditions before buying.

The organizer lists ten productions where the pass itself is admission, without another ticket or seat reservation. For 35 further productions, passholders can buy €5 tickets while available. Tree of Codes is an exception at €20 with the pass. The catalogue is included, and the pass is transferable. Another 22 productions are free anyway.

Limited capacity and registration instructions still matter. A discounted event needs its additional booking; owning the pass does not reserve that place. MAK museum admission also remains a separate cost.

For a short trip, compare the full basket rather than counting how many events appear on the website. Write down the regular prices of the events you can actually attend, then compare that total with your eligible pass price plus every necessary additional ticket. Free events do not create a cash saving just because they appear in a passholder's itinerary.

Availability matters as much as arithmetic. Confirm your essential events before buying a pass chiefly to attend them. If your plan changes from four evenings to one, the best-value option may change too.

Buying several single tickets: check the bulk discount

The bulk offer gives 30% off regular ticket prices when buying four or more tickets in one purchase. It applies to advance purchases online or through the Wiener Konzerthaus Ticket & Service Centre, not evening box offices or other sales outlets. You cannot add later purchases retrospectively to earn the discount.

Check the qualifying basket before paying, particularly when booking for a group or mixing ticket categories. Do not assume a bulk discount stacks with a concession or passholder rate. Compare the confirmed total with the other options rather than adding an unwanted concert to reach a threshold.

The ticket-sales page directs visitors to individual events for prices and applicable reductions. Keep the booking confirmation for the particular performance, not just an image of the festival logo or pass order.

The opening concert: an orchestra and the Danube

Pia Palme's Mit der Donau opens the festival at 19:30 on October 30, in the Großer Saal of Wiener Konzerthaus. The venue lists a €35 ticket and an approximate finish of 20:45, checked October 18. The ORF RSO Wien performs under Irene Delgado-Jiménez, with voice, electronics, performers and a spatial installation.

The work developed through engagement with the Donau-Auen landscape. Expect a staged contemporary work rather than a standard programme of familiar orchestral favourites. The venue also gives a content note about rope bondage used within the performance; read it before choosing this for your group.

Treat the published finish as approximate when arranging dinner or another event. Leave time to collect belongings and get out of the building, not merely to reach the last musical note.

A sound installation and a free opening at the MAK

Annea Lockwood's A Sound Map of the Danube is at the MAK Forum, October 28-November 29. The 167-minute multichannel work follows the river through recordings and voices. A wall map and a time display help listeners locate what they hear; translations accompany the spoken material.

The opening on October 27 has free admission, with a conversation in English at 18:00 and the exhibition opening at 19:00. That is before the main festival dates. For later visits, museum admission applies: the MAK lists a passholder discount, rather than free museum entry.

Choose how long to listen according to your day, and check the museum's visitor information for opening hours. Do not book another activity on the assumption that an installation follows normal concert-entry rules.

If you want a free music evening later in the month, Party Modern: MUK@OWA is listed for November 29, 18:00 to approximately 21:30, at Otto Wagner Areal, Pavilion 10. It brings together students, teachers and guests working with instruments, electronics and improvisation. Admission is free, with limited capacity. Check the building and route rather than arriving anywhere on the large site.

A family option at Dschungel Wien

Ausflug / Utflukt combines music theatre and animation without words or a conventional narrative. The MuseumsQuartier listing recommends it for ages four and up, with public performances on November 14 and 15, including 15:30 on November 15. Its listed performance length is about 25 minutes, followed by free play.

The festival's individual listing gives an €8 regular ticket and a €5 passholder rate. Select the actual session and check the total for everyone attending. A separate school performance is not interchangeable with the public weekend shows.

For a family day, one short performance and an unhurried meal can be enough. Avoid scheduling children into an adult experimental concert just because it is part of the same festival. Our Austria with kids guide covers the broader trip.

Match your venue, address and access route

The 2026 venue list includes distinct locations across the city. These are useful anchors for the examples above:

VenueAddressPlanning detail
Wiener KonzerthausLothringerstraße 20Check the named hall
MAKStubenring 5Use museum hours for installation visits
Dschungel WienMuseumsplatz 1Find the theatre within MuseumsQuartier
Otto Wagner ArealBaumgartner Höhe 1Confirm Pavilion 10 or the other named building
ReaktorGeblergasse 40Check the entrance with staff if arranging step-free access

The festival access guide describes step-free access and lifts at Wiener Konzerthaus and the MAK. Reaktor uses a rear entrance that staff open. Café Korb and echoraum are not wheelchair accessible. Do not treat one venue's provision as a promise for the rest of the festival.

Dschungel Wien asks for an accompanying person for each wheelchair space because not all emergency exits are step-free. Contact the venue about the actual performance and your requirements. The festival's booking guidance asks visitors to register wheelchair needs at least a week before an event; allow that time rather than leaving the conversation to arrival.

Vienna transport and the airport-rail closure

For Wiener Konzerthaus, its arrival page lists U4 to Stadtpark, trams D, 2 and 71 to Schwarzenbergplatz, and Karlsplatz about 700 metres away. Plan other venues separately; a central concert hall and Otto Wagner Areal are not one compact walking circuit.

Airport advice needs particular care this autumn. The current main-line closure notice says the usual airport route through Wien Mitte is unavailable until the end of October 2027. CAT is running a replacement bus, and the shortened S7 ends at St. Marx. Railjet, RJX and IC services still connect the airport with Wien Hauptbahnhof.

Use the dated ÖBB journey planner for your flight and destination. Do not follow a generic airport page that assumes the normal CAT train or through-S7 route is operating. Check your fare's coverage separately from the journey shown on a map.

For evening events, search the return at the expected finishing time. Include the walk from the venue and any access requirements. A daytime route saved in the morning may not be the best journey after a late performance.

Apps, offline preparation and mobile data

WienMobil is useful for local routing and access checks; the festival recommends its lift-status and accessible-route information. ÖBB's planner is useful for the airport and onward rail journeys. Save your venue's full address, room and booking reference before leaving your accommodation.

An offline map can cover much of the walk, while mobile data lets you check a late route change, retrieve an updated booking or message someone waiting at a different entrance. Put a meeting point in the plan before entering a performance, and silence your phone inside.

If your home plan does not include suitable Austrian data, OpenSim Austria plans offer a way to stay connected away from accommodation Wi-Fi. On October 18, the public catalog listed 1GB for seven days at US$1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at US$3.00, both eligible for top-up. These fixed allowances suit a short visit without requiring a high-data daily plan. They do not cover the entire month-long festival in one validity period.

Final fees or currency conversion may affect checkout totals. Existing included roaming may be enough, and no mobile plan guarantees a signal inside every venue. Check phone compatibility, review when to install your eSIM, and use the travel data calculator to estimate your allowance.
