Air India and Air India Express changed the fuel surcharge included in new bookings on October 9, 2026. Air India Express uses the revised rates for bookings from 00:00 IST, while Air India uses them from 11:00 IST.

The domestic charge is INR 400 to INR 1,200 for each one-way sector. The four international categories published by the airlines range from USD 55 for West Asia and the Middle East to USD 215 for North America.

The practical answer: the new rates apply by sector, not once per reservation. Open the fare breakdown, count the flights in the itinerary and compare the final payable total rather than the base fare alone.

When the revised surcharge started

The Air India group announcement gives two cutoffs for new bookings on October 9:

  • Air India Express: 00:00 IST
  • Air India: 11:00 IST

These are booking cutoffs, not travel dates. A flight later in the year can carry the revised amount if it was booked after the relevant cutoff. The airlines say the table applies to itineraries departing from or arriving in India and that the amount varies by sector and route category.

New domestic fuel surcharges

Air India and Air India Express now use five distance bands for domestic sectors.

Domestic sector distanceOne-way fuel surcharge
0 to 500 kmINR 400
501 to 1,000 kmINR 600
1,001 to 1,500 kmINR 850
1,501 to 2,000 kmINR 1,200
More than 2,000 kmINR 1,200

The table is per passenger and per one-way sector. A nonstop return normally has two sectors. A connecting journey can have more, so the booking summary is more reliable than multiplying a city-to-city distance yourself.

New international fuel surcharges

The October announcement publishes four international categories for itineraries into or out of India.

International regionOne-way fuel surcharge
North AmericaUSD 215
AustraliaUSD 210
Europe, including the UKUSD 135
West Asia and the Middle EastUSD 55

The release does not publish an October amount for every international market in the network. If a destination is not in this table, check the live fare breakdown rather than assigning it to the nearest region.

The currency displayed at checkout can also differ from the table currency. That does not make a converted amount a new rate; exchange conversion, taxes and payment-channel charges can change what appears on the final screen.

What happens to an existing ticket

The October notice says the revision is reflected in new bookings after the two cutoffs. It does not say the airline will reopen and add the charge to an unchanged, already issued ticket.

Air India's March surcharge notice and April revision were explicit: earlier tickets did not attract the new surcharge unless a date or itinerary change required the fare to be recalculated. The October release does not restate that sentence, so ask for the complete change quote before altering an older booking.

Changing a flight can involve a current fare, a fare difference and a penalty as well as the current surcharge. Do not assume the difference between an old and new surcharge is the whole change cost.

The surcharge is only one part of the ticket price

A higher surcharge does not predict the exact movement in the final airfare. Base fares move with inventory, and a ticket can also include taxes, airport charges, booking fees and optional extras.

Use the same dates, passengers, cabin, fare brand, bags and payment method when comparing options. Save the issued ticket and receipt so you have the actual breakdown if you later change or cancel the trip.

Air India's refund guidance says cancellation and change penalties vary by fare and route. It also notes that the regulatory cap on an airline cancellation charge is the basic fare plus the fuel surcharge. The DGCA refund requirements set that cap; they do not promise that every fuel surcharge is automatically refunded in full.

Check these details before payment

  • Confirm whether the flight is sold by Air India or Air India Express and use the correct cutoff.
  • Expand the price summary and find the surcharge or carrier-charge line.
  • Count every one-way sector, including connections.
  • Compare the final payable total for the same fare conditions.
  • Check the change, cancellation and no-show rules before buying.
  • Keep the ticket number and receipt after payment.
  • If a travel agent issued the ticket, confirm its service fees and refund process separately.

Mobile data after arrival in India

The airline surcharge does not include mobile service. Travelers who need maps, airline messages, ride booking and accommodation contact after landing can compare the OpenSim India eSIM. The live catalog was checked on October 10 and listed fixed and daily-data options from USD 0.82, with allowance, validity and top-up terms varying by plan.

An eSIM supplies mobile data on a compatible unlocked device. It does not provide inflight Wi-Fi, reduce an airline fee or change a booking. Review the selected plan's current details before paying.

Ten questions about the October fuel surcharge

When did the new Air India fuel surcharge start?

It started for new Air India bookings at 11:00 IST on October 9, 2026. Air India Express moved to the revised rates earlier, at 00:00 IST that day.

Does the revision apply to tickets bought before October 9?

The October announcement applies the rates to new bookings after the cutoffs. It does not say an unchanged issued ticket will be repriced. A later date or itinerary change can require a new fare calculation.

Is the surcharge charged once per booking?

No. The published rates are one-way sector amounts. A nonstop return usually has two sectors, while a connecting itinerary can have more.

How much is the domestic surcharge?

It is INR 400 for a sector up to 500 km, INR 600 for 501 to 1,000 km, INR 850 for 1,001 to 1,500 km and INR 1,200 for any sector over 1,500 km.

How much is the international surcharge?

The published October rates are USD 215 for North America, USD 210 for Australia, USD 135 for Europe including the UK, and USD 55 for West Asia and the Middle East.

What if my international destination is not listed?

Do not infer a rate. The October release publishes only four international categories, so use the fare breakdown for the exact itinerary or ask the airline before payment.

Will changing an older ticket use the new surcharge?

It can if the change requires the fare to be recalculated. Ask for the complete quote, including the current fare, fare difference, surcharge and any change penalty, before confirming.

Is the fuel surcharge the same as a booking fee or tax?

No. It is one component of the airline fare. Taxes, airport charges, booking-channel fees and optional extras can appear separately.

Is the fuel surcharge refundable after cancellation?

There is no single answer for every ticket. The purchased fare rules, route, timing and reason for cancellation matter. Obtain the airline's or issuing agent's itemized refund quote rather than assuming the full amount will return.

Do Maharaja Club award tickets avoid the surcharge?

Do not assume an award has no cash component. Taxes and carrier charges can still appear on a redemption, so review the amount due before transferring points or confirming the award.

How we checked the rates

The October 8 Air India group release supports the two booking cutoffs, all domestic bands and the four published international rates. The airline's March and April releases support the earlier-ticket and recalculation boundary, while Air India's refund page and the DGCA requirements support the cautious cancellation guidance.

This guide was checked on October 10, 2026. It should be reviewed if either airline publishes another surcharge table, changes a cutoff, adds international categories or revises how existing tickets are recalculated.
