Alcatraz closure 2026: dates, refunds and alternatives
Alcatraz Island tours will stop from October 26 through November 18, 2026 for ferry-dock repairs. November 19 is the provisional reopening date, not a guarantee. If your San Francisco trip falls during the closure, check your booking now and choose an alternative that fits what you wanted from the visit.
The National Park Service announcement, issued September 28, says crews will replace the dock's two remaining pilings. The work is expected to finish November 18, but weather and other factors could change that timetable.
This is a closure of island access. A sightseeing boat passing Alcatraz will not give you the cellhouse visit you booked.

What happens to an existing Alcatraz booking?
The Alcatraz City Cruises closure notice says all island tours during the closure are cancelled. Direct bookings receive an automatic refund to the original payment method within five to seven business days; no refund request is needed. If you booked through a partner such as GetYourGuide or TripAdvisor, contact that seller for its options.
Keep your confirmation and cancellation email until the money arrives. If the stated processing period passes, contact the seller with the booking reference rather than buying a replacement from an unfamiliar website.
For bookings on November 19 or later, monitor operator emails and the notice before making non-refundable travel changes. Reopening remains subject to completion of the work.
Do not assume a ticket bought elsewhere provides an exception. The National Park Service ticket guidance identifies Alcatraz City Cruises as the only authorized ferry operator that can dock and let visitors disembark on the island. A reseller cannot turn a suspended landing into an operating tour.
Should you move the tour or change the trip?
| Your main reason for visiting | Practical choice | Before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Walking through the cellhouse and hearing the audio tour | Choose an operating island date | Confirm availability and the current closure notice |
| Seeing the island from the water | Consider a sightseeing cruise | Confirm that it does not include a landing |
| Filling a few hours with children | Choose a mainland attraction | Check tickets, facilities and your return journey |
| Spending a day outdoors with bay views | Consider Angel Island | Check ferry departures, return times and park notices |
If your holiday dates are fixed, replacing one attraction usually involves fewer commitments than moving flights and accommodation. Compare the actual cancellation costs before changing the whole trip.
If Alcatraz is the purpose of your visit, a later date may make more sense. Leave room for a schedule change and choose flexible bookings where practical. Do not buy an expensive trip solely on an expected construction completion date.
On an ordinary operating day, the Parks Conservancy's visitor guide suggests roughly two to three hours for the round trip, with ferries departing from Pier 33. Allow that time when fitting a rescheduled visit around a flight or another timed ticket. The island road is steep, so review access arrangements before booking for someone who has difficulty walking.
Does the replacement bay cruise land on Alcatraz?
No. The operator advertises a 90-minute San Francisco Bay Discovery Cruise from October 26 to November 1, subject to availability. It does not dock on Alcatraz. Check the closure notice for the offer and booking details.
Choose it for time on the bay, not as a cheaper way into the prison. Read the product name and itinerary carefully before paying; an Alcatraz photograph on a ticket page does not establish island admission.
San Francisco alternatives that suit different visitors
Exploratorium: a mainland option for hands-on activities
The Exploratorium at Pier 15 is a useful alternative when children want activities rather than another long explanation of history. It also avoids committing to an island ferry return. Check the date's ticket availability, visitor information and access arrangements before setting out.
Keep lunch and the waterfront walk flexible instead of squeezing a replacement museum between several timed bookings. For a longer family trip, our United States with kids guide helps you choose a realistic regional itinerary.
Angel Island: a separate outdoor and history trip
Angel Island State Park is another island visit, but it is not an alternative entrance to Alcatraz. Choose it for its landscape and history rather than a prison tour. The park publishes current restrictions and visitor information, including museum availability; check those before promising a particular activity to children.
Use the Golden Gate Ferry Angel Island page to plan the crossing and return. The departure terminal and timetable differ from an Alcatraz booking. Treat the last return sailing as a fixed part of the day, and check seasonal food availability rather than relying on buying everything after arrival.
Stay on the waterfront when time is short
For a brief visit or a day with uncertain weather, a mainland plan leaves more room to change direction. Decide whether you want a museum, a meal and a walk, or a boat trip. You do not need to replace the cancelled tour minute for minute.
Save an indoor option and a nearby meeting point before separating as a group. Dress for time by the water even if the forecast looks comfortable farther inland.
Getting to the waterfront without unnecessary detours
If you land at San Francisco International Airport, use BART's SFO guide for the airport connection into the city. BART is not a direct train to Pier 33; plan the final waterfront leg separately.
The SFMTA F Market & Wharves route is useful for waterfront planning. Check its current service and the stop nearest your chosen attraction. Do not carry over the pier address from the cancelled tour when your replacement departs elsewhere.
Before leaving your accommodation, save the new ticket, exact departure point and return instructions. A screenshot of a booking is useful, but it does not replace a live cancellation email or a revised operator notice.
Keeping booking updates available while you travel
Mobile data helps you receive booking emails, check transit changes and message your group away from accommodation Wi-Fi. Download maps and save tickets first so every task does not depend on a connection.
For visitors who need separate US travel data, OpenSim United States plans provide a choice of allowances and validity periods. That lets you match data to this trip rather than assume a daily allowance is the right purchase. Check the selected plan's terms and your phone before buying. If your existing mobile plan already covers your US trip at no extra cost, you may not need another plan.
Use the travel data calculator to estimate maps and messaging use, check phone compatibility, and read when to install an eSIM before travel before departure. An eSIM supplies data; it cannot restore island access or guarantee reception on a ferry.
Sources and reopening updates
Closure and booking information was checked against the National Park Service and Alcatraz City Cruises notices on October 9, 2026. Follow those linked notices before departure. This page will be updated if the closure window changes or the operator confirms reopening; the expected end of construction should not be reported as an actual reopening.
